Chandigarh: State disability commissioner directs UT to expedite work to improve bus stand accessibility
Having a benchmark disability, Bhola highlighted that on visiting the railway counter in ISBT-17, he found the railway counter on the second floor without ramp, tactile tiles, handrails at improper height and no accessible bathrooms as per standard norms. In his complaint filed under Section 80 of the Right of Persons with Disability Act, 2016, he highlighted that there are no accessibility measures opted in the bus stand i.e. no braille enabled sign board, no audio visual announcement system, no reserved parking space with standard parking logo and the staff at railway counter being insensitive and rude to disabled person.
During the earlier hearing held on June 20, 2025, representatives from the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) and engineering department appeared before the commission. CTU informed that the proposal for accessibility upgrades had been submitted to the engineering department on April 4, 2025. However, the architectural drawings necessary to implement the upgrades at ISBT-17 were still pending from the department of urban planning.
Taking serious note of the delay, the commission directed the concerned officials to obtain and submit the drawings by July 10, 2025, ensuring no further deferment.
Meanwhile, the engineering department confirmed that at ISBT-43, accessibility-related civil works such as laying of tactile tiles and construction of ramps have been completed. Photographic evidence and a written affidavit from the responsible SDO were submitted to the commission.
The commission also directed that the remaining issues mentioned in the petition be addressed promptly upon receipt of required documents from the urban planning department. The next hearing is scheduled for July 10, 2025.

1 2 Chandigarh: The city's third high-level bridge on the Sukhna Choe near Shastri Nagar, connecting Manimajra to Sector 26, will be 500 metre long and 27 metre wide. It will be four-laned, with 5m wide pedestrian pathways and dedicated cycle tracks as part of the bridge. The bridge will start on one side from near the T-junction, Sector 26, and on the other side near Shastri Nagar. The level of the bridge will be integrated with the adjacent roads to achieve the intent for which the bridge was constructed. Part of the project is the plan to upgrade the T-junction, which currently has a traffic light point. "The T-junction will be raised by 2 metres for smooth movement of traffic. A slip road will also be constructed towards the Transport Chowk side. A free lane will be provided for traffic coming from the Sector 26 side towards the Manimajra side," said a UT official. The existing bridge over the Sukhna Choe is at a lower level, a causeway, and often gets inundated during monsoons, making the road unsafe and inaccessible. This gravely impacts traffic movement. Originally, there was only a single road, but with the traffic pressure increasing on the stretch over the years, it is now a six-lane road with cycle tracks on both sides. The proposal for a high-level bridge on Sukhna Choe at this site was first proposed in the Chandigarh Master Plan (CMP-2031). The urgency to implement the CMP proposal came after major traffic disruptions caused by flooding in recent years and the increasing incidence of traffic snarls. During the monsoon of 2023, after waters from the Sukhna Lake were released into the Sukhna Choe, the culvert was flooded, and the fast-moving water caused major damage to it. This resulted in traffic being closed on the route for several days. The administration started planning the upgradation of the existing connectivity over the Sukhna Choe near Bapu Dham Colony. The UT engineering department was directed to undertake a feasibility study of the location. Under the study, the volume of traffic and its pattern were examined, and a consultant was hired to plan the bridge. Ancient idols found during restoration work at Hindu shrine in J&K's Anantnag
Ancient Hindu idols have been recovered during excavation work for a renovation project at a Hindu religious site in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials with the ancient idols discovered during excavation at a shrine in Anantnag district of J&K on Saturday, August 2.(PTI) These idols and 'shivlings' could date back over 2,000 years, since the site where these have been found — Karkoot Nag (or Karkut Nag) in the Salia area of Aishmuqam town — is commonly associated by the Kashmiri Pandits with the Karkoota dynasty, which is said to have ruled Kashmir from 625 to 855 CE/BC. It is about 16 km from the district headquarters. A local news channel said 15 ancient idols, including 11 Shivlings, were discovered at the site, which has historical religious remains. A damaged sculpture depicting many deities — part of the discoveries — is believed to be part of an ancient temple pillar, which once stood at the place, a local daily reported. The UT's public works department was undertaking restoration work for a spring there, as part of a broader project of the UT government, when labourers found these items during excavation, PTI reported. Officials from the department of archives, archaeology and museums then visited the site. The idols will be sent to Srinagar for material and dating tests to determine their age and origin, officials told the news agency. Research scholars will also be engaged in the study after the idols are shifted to Shri Pratap Singh Museum in Srinagar. A local, unnamed Kashmiri Pandit was quoted by PTI as saying, 'There is a probability that a temple might have been there or someone might have kept them there for preservation.' Local community leaders present there reportedly called for a need to construct a temple 'to restore the glory of the shrine'.

UT set to start maintenance & repair of cycle tracks in Chandigarh
1 2 Chandigarh: The UT engineering department is set to undertake the maintenance and repair of the cycle tracks in various sectors, including Dakshin Marg, Sectors 19, 27, 28, 45, 46, and various other roads. The department will spend around Rs 10 lakh on the work. Another Rs 21 lakh will be spent on the recarpeting of cycle tracks in Sector 26. The condition of the tracks has worsened over the years. In some places, bollards have been placed on the cycle tracks. Cyclists have to stop, pick up their cycles over these bollards, and then move ahead. In many places, there are trees right in the middle of the tracks, and in other places, there are manholes. Many stretches of the cycle tracks are in darkness during the night as streetlights are not working. At night, many areas of the cycle track are not used because they are not lit effectively. In such places, either there are no streetlights or they aren't working. This also raises security and safety concerns. There are more than 200 km of dedicated cycle tracks in the city, and the engineering department is adding more cycle tracks to more areas of the city. The department is undertaking work to construct dedicated cycle tracks on Purv Marg along the railway line side from junction 53 to Sector 47 light point, Kailbari light point Sector 31C side, and along V-3 roads in Sector 48-D, 49-C, 49-D, and Sector 50-C to the UT boundary.
