
Scientists reveal 'death date' of the universe is sooner than previously believed
A team from the US and China have discovered that our universe will reach its 'death date' and stop expanding when it turns 33.3 billion years old.
Since the universe is estimated to be roughly 13.8 billion years old right now, that leaves just over 19 billion years to go before everything ends in what scientists call a 'Big Crunch.'
While the universe has been expanding outward since the Big Bang, the massive explosion believed to have kickstarted everything in existence, the big crunch would be the reverse - where all matter collapses back into a single point of energy.
Researchers from New York's Cornell University and China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University created a new cosmic model that suggests dark energy, the force believed to be driving the universe's expansion, will weaken over time and succumb to gravity.
Scientists are still trying to prove that dark energy actually exists, but they believe it acts like a repulsive force, counteracting gravity's desire to pull everything together.
If dark energy finally fades after 33.3 billion years, as proposed in the new study, gravity from all the stars, galaxies, and black holes would essentially force the universe to cave in under its own weight.
This updated model of the universe now provides a much shorter timeline for our existence, which previous theories suggested might keep going without any limitations.

NASA's Chelsea Gohd explained in a statement: 'What exactly is dark energy? The short answer is: We don't know. But we do know that it exists, it's making the universe expand at an accelerating rate, and approximately 68.3 to 70 percent of the universe is dark energy.'
In the new study, scientists focused on the role of dark energy in this process, using a model called the axion Dark Energy (aDE) model to interpret recent data suggesting that dark energy behaves differently than previously thought.
Scientists believed dark energy was a cosmological constant, a fixed, unchanging energy density driving the universe's accelerated expansion indefinitely.
This includes a recent study from 2020 in Astronomy & Astrophysics which concluded that the universe's dark energy has a positive cosmological constant, meaning its value never drops off and keeps allowing the universe to grow.
However, the new aDE model found dark energy may actually have a negative cosmological constant of around -1.61, which suggests the universe could eventually reach a maximum size and then collapse in a Big Crunch.
'The age of our universe is of foundational importance in cosmology. Since the establishment of the Big Bang Theory, we know it is finite,' the researchers wrote on the pre-print server Arxiv.
'Using the best-fit values of the model as a benchmark, we find the lifespan of our universe to be 33 billion years,' they added in the study submitted for publication in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.
The researchers analyzed recent data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). These projects studied how fast the universe is expanding by looking at things like exploding stars (supernovae) and the way galaxies are spread out.
The data revealed that dark energy might not be as steady as several previous studies previously concluded.
Study authors used the aDE model, which includes a cosmological constant (a value that affects how the universe expands or contracts) and an ultra-light particle called an axion.
By fitting this model to the data, they estimated key values, like the cosmological constant and the equation of state (a measure of dark energy's behavior).
They then used these values to predict the universe's future, calculating when it might stop expanding and collapse.
Unlike standard models which assumed that dark energy is fixed, this model allowed dark energy to weaken over time as the axion field evolves.
An axion field is like an invisible, super-light energy wave that spreads throughout the entire universe, kind of like ripples on a pond but existing everywhere in space.
Allowing dark energy to be flexible in this way revealed that this repulsive force could have a 'best-fit value' which is negative, meaning it'll fade away as more time since the Big Bang passes.
There's still a lot of uncertainty concerning the end of the universe as we know it. For one, scientists still don't even know what dark energy really is.
NASA has come up with four theories about this invisible force that could be holding back the end of time.
One possibility is that it's vacuum energy, a constant background energy in space tied to Albert Einstein's cosmological constant.
The theory pushes the universe to expand faster but has created a puzzle for modern scientists because its predicted strength doesn't match newer observations.
Dark energy could be a changing energy field or fluid, nicknamed quintessence, that fills space and acts opposite to normal matter, varying across time and space to drive the universe's accelerated expansion.
NASA has also speculated that dark energy might come from defects in the universe's fabric, like hypothetical one-dimensional 'wrinkles' called cosmic strings, formed when the universe was young, pushing space outward.
However, researchers suggest it could be explained by a flaw in Einstein's theory of gravity, meaning the universe's expansion does not rely on dark energy at all.

Alzheimer's disease could be prevented by old-school medicine, scientists say
A metal that has long been used in medication as a mood stabilizer may help ward off Alzheimer's disease, a study has found. Researchers at Harvard and Rush Universities have discovered that declining levels of lithium in the body can cause changes in the brain associated with the neurological disorder. In this animal study, scientists found that maintaining normal lithium levels in mice as they aged protected them from brain degradation and memory loss. Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common forms of dementia and mostly affects adults over the age of 65. About 7million people in the US 65 and older live with the condition and over 100,00 die from it annually. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that by 2050, nearly 13 million Americans will be living with the disease. Senior study author Bruce Yankner, a professor of genetics and neurology at Harvard Medical School, says the findings could point towards a possible remedy for Alzheimer's. As of now, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease and treatment plans include taking medications that target specific symptoms of the disease such as cognitive decline, memory loss and behavioral changes. However, while lithium-based medications have long been used to treat mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, the researchers theorized that a version of the metal known as lithium orotate could help reverse Alzheimer's disease-related damage, prevent brain cell damage and restore memory. In the study, the researchers collected postmortem brain tissue donated by thousands of deceased people in Chicago. Then, they analyzed about 30 different metals in the brain and blood of cognitively healthy people, those in an early stage of dementia called mild cognitive impairment, and those with advanced Alzheimer's. During this analysis, they found that lithium was the only metal that differed significantly between people with and without mild cognitive impairment, which is often a precursor to Alzheimer's disease. All other essential metals, such as magnesium and zinc, were found to be at the same levels across samples. After this discovery, the researchers studied mice that had been specially bred to develop the same brain changes as humans with Alzheimer's disease. The animals were fed a lithium-restricted diet that lacked potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, carrots, bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, dairy, nuts and seeds, all of which are lithium-rich foods. The researchers found that feeding healthy mice a lithium-restricted diet brought their brain lithium levels down to a level similar to that in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is believed to be caused by the development of toxic amyloid and beta proteins in the brain, which can accumulate in the brain and damage cells responsible for memory. Amyloid protein molecules stick together in brain cells, forming clumps called plaques. At the same time, tau proteins twist together in fiber-like strands called tangles. The plaques and tangles block the brain's neurons from sending electrical and chemical signals back and forth. Over time, this disruption causes permanent damage in the brain that leads to Alzheimer's disease and dementia, causing patients to lose their ability to speak, care for themselves or even respond to the world around them. While there is no clear cause of Alzheimer's disease, experts believe it can develop due to genetic mutations and lifestyle choices, such as physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and social isolation. From this study, the scientists found that low lithium levels accelerated the brain aging process and increased inflammation in the mice's brains, leading to loss of connections between neurons and cognitive decline. Over time, the researchers noticed that there was a buildup of Alzheimer's-related plaques and tangles in their brains and the mice had begun to show signs of memory loss. They concluded that as the amyloid beta protein begins to form deposits in the early stages of dementia in both humans and mice, it binds to lithium deposits and reduces brain function. The lower lithium levels affect all major brain cell types and, in mice, give rise to changes associated with Alzheimer's disease, including memory loss. Lithium serum levels in human brains normally range from approximately 0.6 to 1.2 milliequivalents per litre (mEq/L). The metal is found in trace amounts throughout the body, particularly in the brain, kidneys and bones. Lithium plays an important role in the body by helping maintain cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, metabolic and cognitive function. It also keeps the body free from inflammation and supports the body's antioxidant process, protecting brain cells and neurons from damage. Experts recommend eating cereals, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, nutmeg, coriander seeds, cumin, almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, cashews, wheat, rice and oats. They also suggest drinking mineral water and teas such as black, green and red to maintain the required lithium levels in the body. Although the findings need to be confirmed in humans through clinical trials, the researchers suggested that measuring lithium levels could help screen for early signs of the disease.

The rehires come after a summer where extreme weather incidents put the cuts to the National Weather Service under increased scrutiny. Specifically, one government official told NBC that staff at the service believe floods in Texas and the aftermath sparked the rehiring spree. Reps. Mike Flood (R-Neb.) and Eric Sorensen (D-Ill.) said that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration received permission to fill 450 positions at the National Weather Service including meteorologists, hydrologists and radar technicians. 'For months, Congressman Flood and I have been fighting to get NOAA and NWS employees the support they need in the face of cuts to staff and funding,' Sorensen said. 'Hundreds of unfilled positions have caused NWS offices across the country to cancel weather balloon launches, forgo overnight staffing, and force remaining meteorologists to overwork themselves. While I welcome this overdue news to hire more meteorologists, we need to pass our bipartisan bill to ensure these new hires are permanent and protected from any future cuts.' Flood, a Republican, also hailed the move. 'For decades the National Weather Service has helped keep our communities safe with accurate and timely forecasts,' he said in a statement. 'This announcement from the administration sends a message that they're focused on strengthening the NWS for years to come. I applaud the decision and will continue to work to support the agency's critical work.' But the relief will likely not come soon.
