Therapist turns personal immigration story into lifeline for others amid rising ICE concerns
Valencia, a licensed clinical social worker, draws on her own immigration story to support individuals facing cases related to the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), U-visa, T-visa and Extreme Hardship waivers. She provides culturally responsive psychological evaluations to help clients tell their stories in support of immigration relief.
Born in Mexico and brought to the U.S. as a baby, Valencia spent her early childhood undocumented just miles from a border checkpoint. She doesn't recall being afraid of the checkpoint itself due to her age, but she does remember the constant need to stay cautious and aware. She learned what to say and how to carry herself if approached by border patrol.
'People don't leave home without a reason, whether it be fear of persecution, poverty, violence, or something just as challenging,' said Valencia. 'Those who immigrate to the United States are truly looking for a better life and America has always been seen as the land of promise and dreams. They see America as an opportunity to work hard and provide for their family.'
Now, as headlines expose alarming ICE facility conditions and the ongoing trauma endured by asylum seekers, Valencia's work is timelier than ever. Expert immigration evaluations help nearly 90 percent of cases secure relief.
A study analyzing 2,584 immigration cases that included forensic medical evaluations (covering both physical and psychological assessments) found that 81.6% resulted in a positive outcome, which is significantly higher than the national average grant rate of 42.4% during the same period.
Valencia offers immigration evaluation services amid growing national concerns around immigrant safety and due process. She serves clients across California through secure Telehealth sessions in both English and Spanish. Officials sound alarm over first-of-its-kind infestation in major US city: 'It can threaten public health and diminish quality of life'
Officials sound alarm over first-of-its-kind infestation in major US city: 'It can threaten public health and diminish quality of life' An invasive species of mosquito has been discovered in one of the nation's most populous counties, and officials warn it could transmit serious diseases. What's happening? Officials with the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District have detected the Aedes aegypti mosquito, KTVU reported. The mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases such as dengue, Zika, and yellow fever, were found in Livermore, a town on the San Francisco Valley's eastern edge. Aedes aegypti is considered invasive in California and has been spotted in 26 counties, officials with the district say. It is especially aggressive in the daytime and often bites people's ankles. "If Aedes aegypti becomes established in Alameda County, it can threaten public health and diminish quality of life," the agency said in a news release. Why do mosquitoes matter? All invasive species are a concern to their particular ecosystems. When a species is introduced to a foreign environment, it runs the risk of becoming invasive — spreading quickly and outcompeting native plants or wildlife for resources including food and water. It's particularly concerning when the species in question is a mosquito. Because of the diseases they transmit, mosquitoes have been called "the world's deadliest animal." Aedes aegypti, in particular, can spread easily because its eggs can survive for more than a year without water. And human actions are making it easier for mosquitoes to reach new areas and thrive once there. The pollution caused by burning fossil fuels has heated the planet to levels never seen before. And because mosquitoes thrive in warm climates, these higher temperatures have allowed them to be found in previously unthinkable places, such as Finland. What's being done about these mosquitoes? The mosquito abatement officials say their goal is to ensure Aedes aegypti doesn't establish a foothold in Alameda County. To accomplish that, they have been conducting door-to-door checks in two areas where the mosquito was detected. "The quickest way to prevent this annoying and potentially dangerous mosquito species from becoming established is to act now," abatement district general manager Ryan Clausnitzer told KTVU. "We urge residents to grant yard access so we can ensure no one is accidentally breeding mosquitoes." California health officials also encourage people to apply mosquito repellent and to dump and drain standing water — no matter how small the amount — to help prevent the species from spreading. California resident tests positive for plague
A Lake Tahoe area resident has tested positive for plague, California health officials said Tuesday. Officials said they believed the resident was infected after being bitten by an infected flea while camping in the South Lake Tahoe area. The person is recovering at home and under the care of medical professionals, El Dorado County officials said in a news release. 'Plague is naturally present in many parts of California, including higher elevation areas of El Dorado County,' said Kyle Fliflet, El Dorado County acting director of public health. 'It's important that individuals take precautions for themselves and their pets when outdoors, especially while walking, hiking and or camping in areas where wild rodents are present.' According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there's an average of seven cases of human plague reported annually in the United States. The infection is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis and is spread to humans through infected flea bites or contact with infected animals. Symptoms of infection tend to occur within two weeks of exposure and can include fever, chills, weakness and swollen lymph nodes. Plague infections can be treated with common antibiotics. The CDC notes that most plague cases tend to occur in rural areas in the western United States. The California Department of Public Health routinely monitors rodent populations for plague activity and has identified four positive rodent infections in the Tahoe Basin this year. According to El Dorado County officials, prior to this infection, the last positive case in the area was in 2020. To prevent infection, the CDC suggests reducing potential rodent habitats by clearing brush, rock piles, and junk; using insect repellant like DEET when in areas of possible exposure; using flea control product on pets and not allowing pets that roam freely in areas endemic with infection to sleep on your bed.
