Penrice also reflected on an impressive personal season despite the Jambos as a whole missing their targets
James Penrice has dismissed 'weird' claims Hearts can't handle big games despite their Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Aberdeen.
Neil Critchley' s record against the bigger clubs in Scotland makes for grim reading, with just three points from 12 clashes against Celtic, Rangers, Hibs and Aberdeen.

A late defeat to the Dons in Saturday's cup clash has proved the final straw for a number of fans, who want the board to make a change in the dugout after seeing their side come off second best in another big game.
The Jambos ended extra-time with nine men after Michael Steinwender's first-half red card and Cammy Devlin' s second yellow just before Oday Dabbagh's winner denied them a chance at a penalty shoot-out.
The club have demanded answers from the SFA over ref John Beaton's call to dismiss the Aussie. But Penrice insists that despite losing, he and his team-mates showed they can perform on the big occasions.
He said: 'There were weird shouts in the Press earlier on in the week – 'we couldn't handle big games'. But I don't think anyone walked off that park in a Hearts jersey that was disappointed in their performance.
'Every single one of the boys was brilliant. That's what you need. That's what you need every week when you play with this club.

'You need to put 100 per cent in and that needs to be the first thing. That's what we've got to do going forward now.'
After also missing out on the top six, Hearts now face an underwhelming end to the campaign, although they could do with another win to remove any lingering relegation play-off doubts.
And Penrice admits they have no choice but to lift themselves. 'Don't get me wrong, it's very disappointing but I think that's your job,' he added.

'You can't always have it easy in football. This is what you're judged on when it is tough. Can you bounce back? That's what us as a group of players have got to do.
'We've got to bounce back now and go and finish these five games strongly because we owe it to the fans as well.
'We've got to win these five games. That's the least we can do. Hopefully we can do that.

Despite a disappointing campaign for the club, Penrice has been a stand-out and was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year.
He said: 'It's a massive achievement for me. I was hoping that didn't get released until after the game.
'It's a massive credit to where I was. Almost a year ago I wasn't even playing football and I was injured.

'It's a lot of hard work that's gone into it but it's not just me, it's the boys in there as well.
'They help for that and I'm very thankful to the club for giving me an opportunity to play.'

After arriving from Livingston expecting to be a squad player, Penrice can't help but be pleased with his displays during his maiden season in maroon.
He added: 'I've loved every minute of it. It's been a massive jump up for me. I've taken it in my stride and I'm playing with confidence.
'Ultimately, I'd like to be doing a wee bit better than we are. I joined this club to compete in the finals and finish up the higher end of the league and go and play in Europe.
'On that end, it's disappointing. But from a personal point of view, I've loved every minute of it. It's a club I've taken to straight away.'

Tottenham close on Thomas Frank appointment as Levy makes last ditch pitch

Tottenham are pushing to land Thomas Frank as their next manager with Daniel Levy looking to see if he can reduced the financial package Brentford are demanding Tottenham hope to appoint Thomas Frank as their new boss before the end of the week. Spurs have now made contact with Brentford but have yet to make a formal offer to bring in Frank after sacking Ange Postecoglou last Friday. Frank has a release clause in excess of £10m written into his contract at Brentford and the Dane is believed to be keen on making the switch to become the next Spurs boss. ‌ It is still rare for clubs to pay big 'transfer fees' for managers and Tottenham have already made enquiries and laid the groundwork to bring in Frank. Tottenham boss Daniel Levy may try and negotiate on the fee but there is no reason for Brentford to reduce their demands because they inserted the figure when Frank signed his current five year deal in 2022. ‌ Frank also had a 'gentleman's agreement' to stay at Brentford for another year but that will be wiped out if Spurs do pay the compensation with the 51-year-old ready to make his next career step. Dane Frank took over at Brentford in 2018 and guided them into the Premier League and establishing them as a top-flight club on a small budget. That has made him one of the most sought-after managers in the top flight and he has previously been linked with the likes of Manchester United while several German clubs have also looked at him. Frank has a big staff of coaches and analysts and the compensation figure may rise depending on how many he can take with him to Tottenham. But Tottenham are now moving heavily in the direction of being able to get Frank in the coming days and Brentford are braced for a formal approach. The timing is still uncertain but Tottenham will be keen to get a new manager in place to plan for pre-season, the transfer window and also getting ready for the next Premier League campaign. They sacked Postecoglou even after the Aussie led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with the Europa League which also got them a passport into the Champions League. But Postecoglou's reign came to an end because Tottenham lost 22 games in the Premier League last season and there has also been a big shake-up behind the scenes with chief football officer Scott Munn also likely to go. It is understood that the new manager will have funds to spend after the qualification for the Champions League and Spurs will prioritise midfield as a key area to strengthen. Brentford finished 10th in the Premier League this season, seven places and 18 points above Spurs. That made Frank their No1 target as a manager who is a respected coach, he develops young talent and they moved for him ahead of Fulham 's Marco Silva who was also on their shortlist.

The Belgian was sacked in February about which he's since said more patience was required from the board. Looking back on his time, Clement has suggested some of his player's heads and hearts weren't in it towards the end. Speaking to the BBC, he said: 'There are some stories if you look back. Indeed, in the first season nobody in Scotland expected Rangers to come back in be in a title race when we arrived in October. 'The players did it but in the end we lost the game at Ross County and three days later dropped points at Dundee. 'If I look back, two players who were not good in those two games they left at the end of the season on a free transfer. 'They were at that moment busy also talking with other teams with their agents, about their future and all those things. 'Probably, and maybe, it had an affect on them. Did they not want to become Rangers? For sure not. They wanted to become champions and give everything. 'But the situation to be at the end of the contract at that moment of the season was also not a good one. 'You need to see as a club that it's about stability and consistency that you don't come in these situations too much in the important moments of the season. 'You want everything to be clear so players can focus solely on football and I think it played a part in that end of the season in those two games where the shift was made in the championship." SunSport's Robert Grieve reveals why Rangers are set to sack Philippe Clement as manager Given the timing it would appear the Gers in question are John Lundstram and Borna Barasic, who both switched to Turkish side Trabzonspor at the end of their deals last year. Both were mostly left out of the Scottish Cup final against Celtic that season barring a late cameo for the English midfielder. He continued: 'It's a pity we couldn't win the championship coming out of a situation where nobody thought we could win it. '[My] most proud [moment] - because all that matters is winning things - would be winning the League cup and biggest regret would be being close for the title in that first season and not getting it over the line, and also the two cup finals where were very close.' The 23-24 Rangers side finished the league campaign eight points behind their bitter rivals. 4 The pair moved to Trabzonspor when their contracts expired Credit: Willie Vass Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Lawrence Shankland ready to make Hearts decision as striker jets home for transfer summit

The Scotland striker's contract is set to expire and the Jambos are chasing another striking target as he weighs up his options Lawrence Shankland has flown back from honeymoon and is now ready to decide where his future lies. The Scotland international took time out and switched off from football in Dubai in recent weeks but is now set to consider his options. ‌ He will meet with his representatives later this week to discuss his options. ‌ West Bromwich Albion are amongst a number of English clubs who have expressed an interest, along with European and Middle East interest. Hearts are also closing in on a £400 deal for Aalesund striker Claudio Braga. The Portuguese forwward joined the Norwegian side from Moss back in 2023. It is expected he will play the coming weeks in the Norwegian Second Division before he joins up with McInnes at Tynecastle. Hearts have also signed Elton Kabangu, Alexandros Kyzirdis, Christian Borchgrevink and Oisin McEntee. ‌ Barrie McKay and Jorge Grant have both left the club at the end of their contracts while Gerald Taylor has returned to Deportivo Saprissa following his loan spell. The capital side have also pitched to land Australian winger Daniel Arzani but it is looking increasingly likely they will miss out to European rivals.
