Defender Service joins Edinburgh City

Ambitious Edinburgh City have added another player to their squad ahead of the new Scottish League Two campaign.
Defender Jake Service (pictured) has put pen to paper on a deal and the centre-half comes to the Meadowbank club after playing in the Lowland League for The University of Stirling for the last four years.
Stranraer-born Service was part of the team which last season played Dundee United in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at Tannadice in January 2023. United won 3-0 thanks to goals from Aussie full-back Aziz Behich after 45 minutes, Jamie McGrath with an overhead kick after 68 and a lob from Greg Middleton in 81 minutes.
The university side won the East of Scotland Cup in season 2023/24 against Edinburgh City and he reunites with former team-mate, James Stokes, who scored the winning goal in that game.
An Edinburgh City spokesman confirmed this is the first time that the 23-year-old has played at Scottish Professional Football League level.

Aussie tennis player slapped with hefty ban after admitting to doping breach

Thomas Fancutt has become the second Australian player to receive a ban this year after admitting to a breach of the sport's rules against anti-doping. Fellow Aussie Max Purcell, who reached a career high ATP Tour singles ranking of 40 back in 2023, accepted an 18-month suspension after he breached the International Tennis Integrity Agency's (ITIA) doping rules. On Thursday, the ITIA confirmed that Fancutt had accepted a 10-month suspension. He had admitted to a breach of Article 2.2 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP) relating to the use of a 'prohibited method'. Purcell had admitted to contravening the same provision back in December before being handed his suspension in April. He received two infusions that were over 500ml back in 2023. His cooperation had resulted in a reduction in his sanction. However, he missed the Australian Open in January after entering a voluntary provisional suspension. Fancutt, meanwhile, had contravened the regulation after he received an intravenous infusion that was deemed to be over the limit permitted by the TADP in December 2025. Under the governing body's rules, players are only allowed to receive a 100ml infusion across a 12-hour period. Fancutt's suspension will expire before the 2026 Australian Open. Following an investigation, the ITIA explained that Fancutt had admitted to the breach, and had informed the governing body that it was not intentional. 'The ITIA sent the player a notice of a potential Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) on 7 March 2025. On 19 March 2025, the player requested to enter into a voluntary provisional suspension, which came into effect immediately,' the ITIA's statement read. 'Following a full investigation by the ITIA, which included evidence gathering and interviews with the player, Fancutt admitted to the breach, and the ITIA accepted that the breach was not intentional. 'In determining sanction, the ITIA considered relevant precedents across all WADC-compliant sports, in addition to the player's early admission and full co-operation.' His time served under the voluntary provisional suspension will be credited back to his ban. During his suspension, the ITIA states that he is banned from playing in, coaching or attending any tennis event authorised by the ATP Tour, WTA Tour or Tennis Australia. In March, the 30-year-old Aussie, who reached a career-high singles ranking of 107, spoke of his 'devastation' following the news. 'At the end of my 2024 season, I unknowingly violated an anti-doping rule by receiving a 500ml IV infusion to combat severe fatigue,' he wrote in an Instagram story earlier this year. 'The contents of the infusion were solely vitamin B, vitamin C and magnesium. 'The IV infusion amount, however, exceeded 100mls which regardless of its contents, is prohibited under anti-doping regulations, something I was completely unaware of at the time.'

'Imagine lifting the cup': McInnes urges Hearts players to envisage winning trophy

Derek McInnes has told his Hearts players they should all be envisaging themselves lifting the Premier Sports Cup in December as they prepare to visit St Mirren in the second round on Saturday. The recently-appointed manager is eager to lead the Jambos to silverware for the first time since they won the Scottish Cup in 2012. While acknowledging they could have been handed an easier tie than a trip to the Buddies, McInnes sees no reason why his buoyant side should not have their eye on landing the League Cup for the first time since 1962. 'I've said this to them a few times now, there's not one player that should have signed for Hearts without having that aspiration, I hope, to win a trophy here,' he said. 'A fundamental part of signing for a club like Hearts should be that you want to be successful and lift silverware. That's what we all want. There's nothing wrong with saying that, I don't think you're setting yourself up for a fall. 'If we don't win the cup, it doesn't mean to say we were wrong to say it. But we do believe that we're good enough to go the full way and there's no point in believing otherwise. 'There's nothing wrong with setting those lofty ambitions and seeing the end game. I think we've all got to try and imagine that day at Hampden, and I say that to the players, we've got to try and picture that while we're getting through the League Cup games. 'I'm well aware that for a club like Hearts, we're looking for more cup success over a period of time. And there's probably been a bone of contention and frustration with that among the supporters, such is the demand here. 'If we can get through this one, we're 90 minutes away from a semi-final. I want us to be in that position where we can get to a final.' McInnes praised the impact of new set-piece coach Ross Grant, with Hearts having won all six of their competitive matches this term and having scored from set-pieces in each of them. 'Set-plays have always been a huge part for any team,' said McInnes. 'I worked for certain managers who were obsessed with it and I worked for managers who didn't bother with it and I've seen the difference. 'There's a lot of clubs so finely balanced in this league and sometimes set-plays can be the difference. 'We've brought in Ross to aid us with that and be specific with that and it's his job to look forensically at the opposition, what they do and where we can get some gains on that. 'Underneath it all, since day dot, set-pieces are about good delivery, good timing and aggressive players wanting to get on the end of it. But I'm glad we've got Ross, he's been a huge value to us. 'We've got that added time and added focus on it really from Ross and he's done brilliant.' Aberdeen set for Ross McCrorie transfer windfall from Udinese amid Kevin Nisbet twist

The Dons hold a sell-on clause on the Bristol City ace, who has found some form at Ashton Gate Udinese have seemingly confirmed their interest in Ross McCrorie - and that could be good news for Aberdeen. ‌ The Dons sold the versatile midfielder to Bristol City for £2million back in 2023 and after a tricky start at Ashton Gate that was plagued by injury, McCrorie enjoyed a strong end to last season to help the Robins reach the EFL Championship play-offs. ‌ Serie A side Udinese have just won the race to sign coveted Motherwell wonderkid Lennon Miller for just shy of £5million, and reports in Italy claim that that also have their eye on former Rangers kid McCrorie, who Aberdeen have a 20 per cent sell-on clause on. ‌ And the club's sporting director and ex midfield star Gokan Inler admits that the Scotland international - who scored in Bristol City's 4- 1 hammering of Sheffield United last weekend - is one of several players they are in for. Asked about McCrorie directly, he responded: "I can't give you specific details, but there's more than one name. Hundreds of them arrive; the important thing is at the end, when a player signs. "We need to find interesting players, but they also need to have played. Players like Miller and Goglichidze are young but already have leadership experience in their legs. And they were playing. We look at these aspects, as well as character. Anyone who comes here has to give their all." Some supporters of a Aberdeen persuasion have called for the club to try and re-sign loan star Kevin Nisbet, who finished as the Dons' top scorer with 14 goals last season. Nisbet has just 12 months remaining on his contract at Millwall but manager Alex Neil has hinted that he will be looking to give the player more minutes after the Scotland striker appeared off the bench in their 1-0 victory against Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. ‌ He said: "We've got some other lads that we need to get more minutes into, Nisbet and Dan Kelly, and that coming onto the pitch, which was good for them." Pittodrie boss Jimmy Thelin has bolstered his squad with seven summer signings so far and is hopeful of getting two more over the line ahead of their crunch Europa League play-off. The Scottish Cup holders' are poised to land long-term target Marko Lazetic and will secure the services of the AC Milan forward on a free transfer, with the San Siro giants inserting a 20 per cent sell on clause into the contract. Aberdeen are also in talks to sign Varnamo star Kenan Bilalovic and are willing to fork out £500,000 to bring the 20-year-old Swedish winger to the Granite City. UEFA's squad registration deadline for all play-off games is on Friday but the Dons will be able to register two wildcards signings up until 24 hours before their the first leg of the final qualification hurdle. Thelin's side will face the winner of the third qualifying round showdown between Drita of Kosovo and Romania's FCSB tonight, with the away team 3-2 up from the first leg in Bucharest last week.
