After two conclave votes, betting odds settle on one cardinal as Pope Francis' successor
Ever since Pope Francis died on April 21, Cardinal Pietro Parolin has been bettors' favorite as his successor. But, not surprisingly, what gamblers think and what 133 cardinals decide can be completely different.
Parolin's probability of becoming the next pope based on online bets has risen as high as 40% in recent days, but the most probable cardinal wasn't the one selected a dozen years ago. On Wednesday, the cardinals began the papal conclave at the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.
"Outsiders shouldn't be discounted in the next pope betting market," Sam Eaton, U.K. manager for Oddschecker, wrote Tuesday in an email. "Back in 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was 50/1 (2% probability) just two days before being elected.'
When does the 2025 conclave resume? Smoke times, full schedule for May 8

Could Cardinal Jose Tolentino de Mendonça from Portugal be the next long shot elected to the papacy? Eaton said de Mendonça has accounted for 7% of all bets placed on Oddschecker in the past month, but he still has 50/1 odds and the 12th most likely candidate based on betting on their site.
So if betting markets failed to predict that Francis would become pope in 2013, how good an indicator are the millions of dollars of bets currently being placed around the world?
Harry Crane, a Rutgers University statistics professor, studies election outcomes and the predictions made by betting markets. He doesn't expect conclave betting markets to rival the accuracy of those predicting events like elections, which offer vast amounts polling and other data, and draw billions of dollars in bets. But he does think there's a good chance they have narrowed down the field.
"Does it have more predictability than if you just picked one out of 130 cardinals, and you gave them all the same chance of winning? I would say 'yeah probably.'
"If you have specific information about five of the cardinals, or maybe one or two specific ones, you could get quite a bit of information about what's going to happen," Crane said. "There's only 130 of them."
Who are the favorites to be the next pope
Within hours of Francis' death, betting on sites such as Polymarket, a cypto trading platform, pushed Parolin, a compromise candidate between progressives and conservatives, ahead of the rest of the potential candidates. He remains the favorite in most betting markets.
Who could become the next pope?
Details about the top candidates to become Francis' successor:
Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Position: Vatican diplomat
Nationality: Italian
Age: 70
What else? Parolin is seen as a compromise candidate between progressives and conservatives. He has been a church diplomat for most of his life and was Francis' secretary of state (often called the 'deputy pope') since 2013, the year Francis was elected.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle
Position: Former archbishop of Manila
Nationality: Filipino
Age: 67
What else? Tagle is often called the 'Asian Francis' because of his similar commitment to social justice. If elected he would be the first modern-era pope from Asia.
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson
Position: Vatican official; president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
Nationality: Ghanaian
Age: 76
What else? Turkson's background includes tending to congregations in Ghana in addition to leading several Vatican offices. He comes from one of the most dynamic regions of the church, which is struggling against secularism in its European heartlands. He would be the first pope from sub-Saharan Africa.
Matteo Maria Zuppi
Position: Archbishop of Bologna
Nationality: Italian
Age: 69
What else? Zuppi is called 'the Italian Bergoglio' because of his affinity with Francis. Zuppi is known as a "street priest" who focuses on migrants and the poor and cares little about pomp and protocol. He would be the first Italian pope since 1978.
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa
Position: Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem
Nationality: Italian
Age: 59
What else? Pizzaballa has served in Jerusalem and has advocated for peace in the Middle East. He has criticized the Hamas invasion of Israel and Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza. His relative youth may hurt his chance of being selected.
Cardinal Peter Erdo
Position: Former president of the Council of Bishops Conferences of Europe
Nationality: Hungarian
Age: 72
What else? Erdo is seen as another compromise candidate. He ranks as a conservative in theology but is also considered pragmatic. He never clashed openly with Francis, unlike other tradition-minded clerics.

Domino's and Pizza Hut rival makes ‘first-in-decade' menu change

There was a time when people would say that any pizza was pretty good, even some of the worst takeout and frozen options. Consumers ate bad pizza (or decent pizza depending upon how you look at it) because it was the best option. Calling Domino's (DPZ) for delivery, or pulling out a frozen pizza from the back of the freezer (or maybe even stooping pizza rolls) was the best late-night option. In some markets, it was the only delivery choice. Related: Popular dessert, fast-food chain survives Chapter 11 bankruptcy Bad pizza was better than cooking, especially if you had limited ingredients to work with. Food delivery services changes all of that. Now, Uber Eats and DoorDash will bring you sushi, Italian food, Chinese, and who knows what else until fairly late hours. You can also order pizza from local places , and the competition for your food dollar has increased. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Delivery from Uber Eats and other services, however, is expensive and many consumers have been tightening their budgets when it comes to food. People who used to order higher-end pizza, might opt for Domino's or Pizza Hut, while those chains may lose customer to frozen pizza. Now, a leading player in the space wants to give people a mix of value and gourmet that may fit the current market really well. DiGiorno has long-used the catchphrase, "it's not delivery, it Digiorno." They saw that as a positive, some customers saw it as an apology. Sure, I could have gotten delivery, but instead I opted for this frozen pizza. It's either lazy or insulting, but not person actually needs to be told they're eating a frozen pizza. DiGiorno has marketed itself as premium frozen, which it is, but it's all relative. The company offered a superior product to much of what you see on grocery shelves. It's better (to most) than Elio's, Red Baron, and many of the other offered brands. DiGiorno may also be better than some freshly-made frozen in-house pizza brands, but many Publix and Fresh Market fans might argue that. DiGiorno was upscale in that it was higher-quality than most of its rivals. Now, the Nestle-owned company wants to put a flag in the sand. It does not want to just say it's better. It actually want to be better. Premium frozen pizza is a bit like saying, "that's the best gas station sushi I have ever had. Still, DoGiorno has made a real bid to offer something better. The company has added a new line, Wood Fired Style Crust Pizza. "This all-new pizza from DiGiorno features premium toppings and a perfectly crisp crust that serves up restaurant-quality taste fresh from your oven. Previously baking the crust at high temperatures to achieve a perfectly chewy and lightly charred texture, the DiGiorno Wood Fired Style Crust Pizza elevates the at-home pizza experience offering a dough with rich flavor, airy structure and the perfect bite," the company shared in a press release. Related: Popular local Dairy Queen rival suddenly closing, no bankruptcy The U.S. pizza market is nearly $55 billion, but less than 20% is frozen pizza. In a time where budgets are getting tighter, DiGiorno may be hitting a space in offering a mix of quality and value. The company will offer four flavors: DiGiorno Wood Fired Style Crust Four Cheese Pizza features a rich blend of cheeses-Romano, Asiago, Mozzarella, and Wood Fired Style Crust Italian Meat Trio Pizza includes a curated blend of pepperoni, salami, and Italian Wood Fired Style Crust Supreme Speciale Pizza is a vibrant celebration of flavors featuring generous layers of savory pepperoni and sausage and topped with a medley of colorful vegetables-green, yellow, & red peppers and Wood Fired Style Crust Premium Pepperoni Pizza is stacked with rich, zesty pepperoni on a crispy, lightly charred crust. All four DiGiorno Wood Fired Style Crust Pizza varieties will be available at retailers nationwide for an MSRP of $6.49 (prices may vary by store) starting in May. Some have hailed this as a "first-in-a-decade" change. "Frozen pizza hasn't seen a major innovation in a decade when stuffed crust hit the market, Graves said. Before that, it was rising crust, which was developed by DiGiorno in 1995," FoodDive reported. The Arena Media Brands, LLC THESTREET is a registered trademark of TheStreet, Inc.

Maserati ready to present new business plan very soon, brand boss says

MODENA, Italy (Reuters) -Maserati plans to present a new business plan shortly, soon after parent company Stellantis' new CEO Antonio Filosa officially starts in his job later this month, the head of the struggling luxury carmaker said on Thursday. The loss-making Italian brand, the only one in the luxury segment for the world's fourth largest automaker, has no new model launches scheduled at the moment, with Stellantis reviewing Maserati's strategies after a previous business plan was put on hold last year. Maserati CEO Santo Ficili said the plan was being finalised and would not just include new products but also redesign relations with dealers and the assistance network. "We have clear ideas about what we want to do, we hope we can be ready very soon," Ficili said at the Motor Valley Fest in the Italian city of Modena, where Maserati is headquartered. "Let's wait for Antonio to take up his job," he added. Stellantis last week named its North American chief Filosa, an Italian national, as its new CEO. His appointment will be effective from June 23. "Antonio loves the (Maserati) brand, I am sure we'll do great things," Ficili said, adding Maserati will continue to design, engineer and manufacture all its models in Italy. Asked about market speculation that Stellantis could assess a sale of Maserati amid poor results and falling sales, Ficili reiterated the group had no plans at all to divest from it. Ficili, who is also the head of Stellantis premium brand Alfa Romeo, said a review of the Alfa plan was imminent too. The group has hired consultant McKinsey to advise on strategies for Maserati and Alfa Romeo as they face a hit from U.S. tariffs. Maserati makes around 30% of its sales in the U.S., while Alfa Romeo generates some 15%.
