UP Police recruitments free from corruption, discrimination, says Yogi Adityanath

Hindustan Times16-06-2025
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the objective of the grand ceremony for distribution of appointment letters to 60,244 newly recruited police personnel in Lucknow was to ensure that every citizen and family of the state gets the benefit of participation in governance without any discrimination. The event marked the largest induction of civil police officers in the country to date.
Before 2017, police recruitment in Uttar Pradesh was marred by nepotism and corruption—jobs were nearly impossible to secure without money or recommendations, the chief minister said, adding that era is over.
'We followed merit and transparency, respecting constitutional reservations,' he said, adding that no discrimination occurred based on caste, religion, class or region.
'The new Uttar Pradesh awards every youth justice through merit,' he said.
'The more you sweat during uniform training, the less blood will be shed in life,' Adityanath declared at the grand police recruitment ceremony held at the Defence Expo Ground. He emphasised that the exemplary performance of the police force during Maha Kumbh earned widespread praise.
'If we can perform there, we can perform anywhere,' he added, highlighting how the police today stood for both law enforcement and social trust.
He applauded this recruitment drive as a pioneering step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah's 'Smart Policing' vision, marking it as a historic advancement. While the political nuances of Amit Shah's visit cannot be overlooked as panchayat polls are due in the state early next year, the event is also significant as it shows the government's commitment to creating job opportunities for youngsters.
Yogi Adityanath highlighted the state's record of creating over 850,000 government jobs in eight years, including approximately 125,000 police recruitments. He stated that these efforts not only boost numbers but also reflect the government's dedication to maintaining peace, security, and investment in the state.
'The double-engine government has set a benchmark for clean and transparent recruitment processes,' he said, noting that even youths from the poorest families now serve as police personnel.
Smart policing
He expressed gratitude to Shah for helping with paramilitary and military training resources when recruitment began in 2017. As a result, the state now has the capacity to train over 60,000 police officers locally. He also emphasised forensic upgrades: eight new forensic laboratories are already operational, with six more under construction. Each of the 75 districts now has two mobile forensic vans. Additionally, cyber units have been established in all 75 districts, and cyber help desks in 1,994 police stations—aligning with new criminal laws effective July 2024 (Indian Justice Code 2023, Civil Security Code 2023, and Evidence Act 2023).
Yogi's advice
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath urged the new recruits to be friendly, sensitive, and solution-oriented, offering his congratulations to them and their families. He expressed confidence that they would serve the state excellently.
Sunday's dawn brought new hope and fulfilment to more than 60,244 youths as they received their appointment letters at the grand 'Rozgaar Ke Mahakumbh,' he emphasised.
Candidates expressed gratitude to the state government for ensuring excellent arrangements even in challenging weather conditions.
Each candidate was seated in the block designated for their division alongside officials from their respective districts, where they were ceremoniously handed their appointment letters.
Earlier, deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak addressed the gathering while director general of police (DGP), Rajeev Krishna delivered the welcome speech at the start of the event.
New recruits greet CM
As CM Yogi was invited to the stage, the 60,244 recruits stood and greeted him with their appointment letters, offering a monumental ovation.
Yogi Adityanath congratulated the successful candidates and their families, urging the new officers to commit to public service. The recruits responded with applause, reassuring him of their dedication.
The 15 recruits who received letters from Shah
The following is the list of 15 recruits who received their appointment letters directly from Union home minister Amit Shah: Satyam Nayak (Sant Kabir Nagar), Prem Sagar (Lakhimpur Kheri), Shalini Shakya (Farrukhabad), Upendra Kumar Yadav (Ballia), Shilpa Singh (Bareilly), Binu Babu (Kanpur Dehat). Yogendra Singh (Mahoba), Shivansh Patel (Unnao), Manish Tripathi (Varanasi), Roshan Jahan (Lucknow), Azad Kushwaha (Kannauj), Mithilesh Bhatt (Gorakhpur), Sony Rawat (Rae Bareli), Neha Gond (Mau) and Sachin Saini (Baghpat)

LDF and UDF ratchet up their demand for Suresh Gopi to clarify voter list fraud accusations

As accusations of voter list fraud in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections appeared to turn from a trickle into a torrent, the ruling front and the opposition in Kerala ratcheted up their demand for a public accounting from Union Minister of State for Tourism, Suresh Gopi, MP. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary, M.A. Baby, dismissed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) former State president K. Surendran's averment that Mr. Gopi owed no explanation and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) were grousing belatedly about Election Commission of India (ECI) officials in Thrissur stacking the odds in favour of the Union Minister. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Baby said: 'Belated reporting of a theft did not absolve the perpetrator of the crime. The BJP's voter fraud in Thrissur is a microcosm of what the BJP-engineered in other States. The modus operandi, including identity theft, reflects a pattern. The Election Commission of India (ECI) should retrieve its lost credibility by conducting a thorough investigation', he said. Meanwhile, Mr. Gopi, who arrived after a long hiatus in Thrissur early Wednesday, appeared to maintain a sphinx-like silence. When mobbed by reporters, Mr. Gopi quipped: 'Thank you for the favours done'. Congress speak Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said Mr. Gopi's reticence was a deliberate attempt to cock a snook at the Thrissur electorate and civil society. 'Mr. Gopi has the right of reply, given the gravity of the accusations of voter fraud swirling around him and the BJP in Kerala. His speechlessness lends credibility to Congress's accusations of massive voter list fraud in Thrissur each passing hour,' Mr. Satheesan said. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala adduced evidence of what he claimed was massive voter list fraud by CPI(M) and BJP since 2021. He said the BJP appeared to have taken a page from the CPI(M) 's playbook on rigging elections. 'It included persons appearing in multiple voters' lists across districts and fictitious voters using phoney addresses and identity proof', he added.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami allied with BJP without consulting party: Mutharasan

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) without consulting his party, prompting members to leave the party, alleged the State secretary of the Communist Party of India, R. Mutharasan, on Wednesday. Mr. Mutharasan told journalists in Salem that BJP had pressured Mr. Palaniswami into joining hands with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 'In an attempt to strengthen his party's unity, Mr. Palaniswami is trying to create anger among his supporters by alleging that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan spoke ill of former leaders M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa,' he claimed . 'He (Mr. Palaniswami) is targeting Mr. Thirumavalavan to divert the anger of the AIADMK cadre away from himself,' he added. Mr. Palaniswami and other AIADMK functionaries are running a 'low-level campaign' against Mr. Thirumavalavan on social media and the CPI has condemned it, he said. On the arrest of Madurai Mayor's husband in a property tax scam, Mr. Mutharasan said action must be taken against all those found guilty and, if the Mayor's role was proven, the government should act without hesitation. Criticising the Election Commission, he alleged it had lost its independence and become subservient to the BJP, posing a threat to democracy. Citing the deletion of 65 lakh voters, he claimed names of BJP supporters were retained while opponents were removed. He accused the Union government of forcing Aadhaar for all services despite the Supreme Court ruling that such compulsion was unacceptable. Voter ID and ration cards could be easily forged, a fact acknowledged by the court. India was facing 'gradual democratic erosion' and could soon see BJP critics stripped of citizenship. He urged the public to prepare for a 'second freedom struggle.' Mr. Mutharasan added that thousands of crores lent to fraud-hit companies were written off as non-performing assets, while ordinary citizens struggled to secure and repay small loans. Farmers unable to repay debts were ending their lives, but major defaulters faced no action, he alleged. On actor Mansoor Ali Khan's comment that North Indian migrants should not be included in Tamil Nadu's voter rolls, the CPI leader said large-scale, politically motivated additions and deletions were under way, and the party opposed such practices.

Midnight spectacle in Lutyens' Delhi as Rudy beats Balyan in BJP vs BJP battle in Constitution Club poll

Rudy's victory marked the culmination of weeks of an intriguing political battle between the two ruling party MPs, one that brought to the surface a vertical split within the BJP that, until now, had only been whispered about in political circles. BJP Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy had just defeated his party colleague and former MP Sanjeev Balyan in the election for the post of Secretary (Administration) at the Constitution Club of India, located just metres from the Parliament complex. New Delhi: Well past midnight Tuesday, the skies over Lutyens' Delhi lit up with fireworks. It was an unusual sight for the area—home to the nation's power elite, the Parliament and various ministries. And the reason behind the celebration was just as unexpected! Until he threw his hat into the ring, it was almost inconceivable that Balyan—a prominent Jat leader from western Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane belt with a controversial past including allegations of involvement in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots—would challenge Rudy. Balyan said he accepts the mandate with a spirit of 'patience and self-reflection'. 'This tradition of struggle will continue, for in a democracy, continuity is the true victory. Heartfelt thanks to all the esteemed members and congratulations to the winning candidate, Mr. @RajivPratapRudy,' he said in an X post in Hindi. Rudy, a five-term MP from Bihar and former Union minister, is a commercial pilot by training and has taught Economics at the college level. Suave and urbane, he represents a polished, metropolitan face of the BJP, markedly different from Balyan's rugged nature. However, it soon emerged Balyan had a powerful lobby backing him to dislodge Rudy, who had been winning the post unopposed for the last 25 years, with the exception of 2005 and 2010, when the Congress's J.P. Aggarwal had challenged him. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, considered close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, publicly batting for 'Dr Balyan'—who earned a PhD in Veterinary Anatomy from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, in 2005—was the clearest indication of that support. 'Dr Balyan needs to win to reclaim the club for MPs and former MPs. It is now controlled by IAS, IPS, IFS and pilots,' Dubey told reporters as voting went underway Tuesday. At the end, Dubey unwittingly helped Rudy gain an edge, with the Opposition throwing its weight behind him. After all, the Opposition sees Dubey as Shah's voice—both inside and outside Parliament. No wonder then that none other than Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge were among the 707 current and former MPs who cast their votes in Tuesday's election. In fact, Sonia and Kharge were among the first to arrive. Shah, on the other hand, turned up about 30 minutes before polling closed, accompanied by BJP president J.P. Nadda and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. — Dr Nishikant Dubey (@nishikant_dubey) August 13, 2025 Rudy said his winning margin was over 100 votes. Among other posts, AP Jithender Reddy and Rajiv Shukla of the Congress and Tiruchi Siva of the DMK were already elected unopposed as Treasurer, Secretary (Sports), and Secretary (Culture), respectively. 'When Congress leader Sonia ji arrived along with Kharge saheb, and from our party Amit Shah ji and Nadda saheb came, the true spirit of democracy was reflected in the Constitution Club elections…' Rudy told reporters. Asked about Dubey's remarks on the functioning of the club, Rudy said, 'These things happen in politics, let it be.' It was not lost on Rudy, who was dropped from the Union Cabinet in 2017, that he was up against the might of the establishment—and defeated it—despite being its long time insider. Dubey, meanwhile, reiterated his support for Balyan in an X post Wednesday morning. 'I was, and am, with Sanjeev Balyan ji in the Constitution Club election. This election is a historic one in Balyan ji's life. It has shown his power. Congress president Kharge sahab and Sonia Gandhi ji caming to vote in the club's election is his (Balyan's) victory. Even when senior Congress leader and then MP and Delhi Pradesh Congress president Jai Prakash Aggarwal ji contested against Rudy ji in 2005 and 2010, neither Sonia Gandhi ji nor any member of her cabinet came to vote,' he said in his post in Hindi. 'Congratulations to Sanjeev Balyan for enhancing the dignity of the Constitution Club, and best wishes to @RajivPratapRudy ji for his victory,' he added.
