Number of Cong leaders, workers, social activists join AAP
Punjab AAP working president Amansher Singh Shery Kalsi and cabinet minister Mohinder Bhagat formally inducted the new entrants in the presence of party leader Sunny Ahluwalia and local leaders.
According to AAP, Sham Lal Bhagat, Congress vice-president from Ward 72, joined the party. Along with him, his associates Devraj Bhagat, Ashwini Bhagat, Ram Bhagat, Jagdish Bhagat, Ravi Bhagat, Vishambhar Bhagat, Rajinder Rinku, Rajkumar Bhagat, Rohit Bhagat, Aman Bhagat, Vasudev Bhagat, and Kishan Bhagat also joined the party. AAP sources said that Ramesh Bhagat is a leader of the Bhagat community and national president of Shivraj Sena.
He was accompanied by his associates Ravi Bhagat, Kishan Lal Bhagat, Babbu Bhagat, Madan Chahal, Keval Kishan, Arun Jogi, Mohit Bhagat, Shivchand, Sunil Bhagat, Mohit Bhagat, and Manjeet Kumar.
"Several young leaders and social activists from the city also became part of the AAP family. Notable names include Pankaj Mehta, Piyush Sharma, Harjit Arora, Parminder Singh, Sanjeev Aggarwal, Ketan Aggarwal, Honey Singh Bohat, Sherry Singh Bohat, Suresh Birla, Vicky Eklavya, Vikas, Akshay, Vishal Gopal, Shubham, Sunny Gehlot, Ravi, Rohit Atwal, and Tushar Gaurav," the party said.
Addressing mediapersons, Shery Kalsi welcomed the new leaders and said, "Leaders from various parties are continuously joining the Aam Aadmi Party. They are influenced by its policies and work. The massive number of people joining us today will undoubtedly strengthen us in the bypoll."
He added that under the leadership of chief minister Bhagwant Mann, the AAP government was providing 300 units of free electricity to all households every month without any discrimination.
"Moreover, substantial reforms are being made in the education and healthcare sectors. Seeing these revolutionary works of the AAP government, opposition parties are scared," he maintained.
Kalsi said that the BJP and Congress have no agenda, therefore, they engage in lower-level and manipulative politics. He accused the BJP of openly supporting Congress. "Both are working hand in hand because they don't want a third party to emerge in Punjab politics," he said.
Cabinet minister Mohinder Bhagat described chief minister Bhagwant Mann as the "messiah of the poor."
"He has done historic work for the poor, Dalits, and marginalised in the last three years. This is why Punjab's poor and backward communities stand firmly with the Aam Aadmi Party," he said.
AAP's Punjab general secretary Sunny Ahluwalia took a jibe at the Congress, saying that its leaders kept fighting among themselves. "Their candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu is so arrogant that he doesn't even respect the local MP or his own party's state president, Raja Warring. Last time, people defeated him for his arrogance. This time, too, people will teach him a lesson," he claimed.

Pawar moved the application before the special MP-MLA court, seeking permission to withdraw the pursis, even though the matter was not listed for hearing that day. His plea read: 'The present case is pending before the court and is fixed for hearing on September 10. Today, the defence intends to file withdrawal pursis dated August 13 in this case. However, the said matter is not on today's board. It is respectfully prayed that this matter be kindly taken on board today in the interest of justice.' The submission concluded: 'The pursis is hereby withdrawn as not pressed at this stage.' After filing the withdrawal on Wednesday, Pawar issued a press statement in the evening acknowledging that the original pursis had been filed without Gandhi's approval. 'The contents of the 'pursis' were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to the filing and expressed disagreement with its contents,' the statement read. The now-withdrawn application had referred to complainant Satyaki Savarkar's familial relationship to Nathuram Godse and Gopal Godse, both accused in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. It also cited Gandhi's constitutional role as Leader of Opposition, his press conferences alleging electoral malpractice by the Election Commission of India (ECI), and his recent parliamentary exchanges with the Prime Minister on Hindutva. It argued that these factors, coupled with the complainant's ideological affiliations, gave rise to a reasonable apprehension of danger to Gandhi. 'In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar,' the pursis stated. The case pertains to a criminal defamation complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar over remarks allegedly made by Rahul Gandhi during a programme in London in March 2023. The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 10.

BRS flays hike in life tax on vehicles, says it's heavy burden on middle-class, poor
The recent increase in life tax on vehicles effected by the State Government is nothing short of a ruthless blow to the poor and middle-class families of Telangana, former minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao has said. Condemning the government decision, Mr. Rao accused the government of exploiting people through oppressive taxation policies. He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had proved his deputy M. Bhatti Vikramarka's words right that the Congress had immense experience in collecting revenue by turning this experience into a burden on the common man. Without any justification, the Congress Government had issued GOs 53 and 54 increasing life tax on new vehicles and squeezing the poor and middle class under additional financial pressure. Purchasing even a two-wheeler costs over ₹1 lakh in the present day. Farmers, small traders and daily wage workers depend on these vehicles for livelihood and raising the life tax from 12% to 15% on two-wheelers above ₹1 lakh is nothing but extortion, the BRS leader said. For instance, if a two-wheeler's showroom price is ₹1.10 lakh, the previous tax was ₹13,200 and with the hike it would become ₹16,500 – an additional burden of ₹3,200 per two-wheelerke. Across Telangana, this life tax hike would extract over ₹1,000 crore from the people. Owning a car is an aspiration for many families and most middle-class buyers rely on loans to fulfil this dream. But the Congress Government had shattered those hopes as cars priced between ₹10-₹20 lakh would not attract 18% life tax, up from 17%. resulting in an extra burden of nearly ₹20,000 per vehicle. For vehicles priced above ₹20 lakh and ₹50 lakh, the life tax was been raised by 2% and 3%, respectively, burdening more households. The government didn't stop there and increased taxes on commercial vehicles too from 20% to 22% for vehicles costing above ₹20 lakh and up to 25% for those over ₹50 lakh. Ultimately, this tax burden would be passed on to the market and affect the general public through increased prices of goods and services. In addition, the Congress government is handing over road management under the HAM (Hybrid Annuity Model) to private companies for 15–20 years. To fund this model through loans, the government is quietly increasing taxes as a backdoor way to loot people under the pretext of development, Mr. Rao added.

In the face of mounting pressure from farmer bodies and opposition parties, the Punjab government on August 11 withdrew its land pooling policy, which it had once termed "farmer-friendly". Live Events Following the rollback of the policy which they had described as the land "grabbing" scheme, the opposition parties and farmer organisations had called it a victory of the people of Punjab and had claimed that they "forced" the Bhagwant Mann government to withdraw it. The AAP government's move of withdrawal of the policy came days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered an interim stay on the implementation of the land pooling policy for four weeks. The court on August 7 had held that Punjab's land pooling policy appears to have been notified in haste and concerns including social impact assessment and environment impact assessment should have been addressed before its notification. The Punjab Cabinet had approved this land pooling policy in June and had then asserted that not a single yard will be forcibly acquired from land owners. The state government had planned to acquire around 65,000 acres of land at many places including around 45,000 acres only in Ludhiana for developing residential and industrial zones. Under the policy, an owner will be given a 1,000 square yard of residential plot and a 200 square yard of commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land, the state government had said. Meanwhile, in another decision, the Cabinet Thursday approved an amendment to the Punjab Cooperative Societies Act, 1961 and the withdrawal of stamp duty and registration fee exemptions for certain classes of cooperative societies. Currently, the Act provides exemptions from compulsory registration, originally intended to facilitate the development of cooperative institutions. However, this provision enabled property transactions, particularly in urban housing societies, to take place without formal registration or the payment of stamp duty and registration fees, said the spokesperson. This situation has encouraged unregistered possession, benami transactions, and other legally risky arrangements. Therefore, an amendment to Section 37 of the Act has been made by adding Clauses 2 and 3. These clauses stipulate that the State Government may, through a notification in the Official Gazette, direct that the exemption under sub-section (1), or any part thereof, shall not apply to certain classes of cooperative societies or specified categories of instruments. The Cabinet also approved the creation of the post of 'Panchayat Development Secretary' by merging the cadres of Panchayat Secretaries and Gram Sevaks (Village Development Officers). Subsequently, a state cadre will be constituted for these posts to accelerate rural development across Punjab. The Cabinet granted ex-post facto approval for the formation of a group of ministers (GoM) to ensure the smooth procurement of Kharif and Rabi crops during the procurement seasons. This GoM is chaired by the Agriculture Minister and includes the ministers for food & civil supplies, transport, and water resources as members. The Cabinet also granted ex-post facto approval for the formation of a Cabinet Sub-Committee which will review and consider the recommendations made by the committee of officers regarding Parts II and III of the 6th Punjab Pay Commission Report.
