#SHOWBIZ: A seriously funny lady
MENTION the name Rosnah Mat Aris and an iconic television advertisement from the 1980s will come to mind.
In the Axion dishwashing paste commercial, Rosnah, a kampung eatery owner, introduces her long-suffering employee — played by the late actor-comedian Harun Salim Bachik — to the product.
Reminiscing about those days in a recent interview, Rosnah said: "I began acting in the 1980s, advertising Axion and many other products. I also starred in the popular TV3 Ramadan drama series 'Rumah Kedai' alongside Kartina Aziz and Harun."
She also fondly remembers her appearance in 'Naik Tangga Turun Tangga', the Malaysian version of the famous 1970s British drama series 'Upstairs Downstairs'.
"That was a very Malaysian take on the popular British TV series — about a rich family living upstairs in their bungalow and their employees who live downstairs. I played one of the workers."
Mentored by the late actor and television host Mustaffa Noor, Rosnah, now 69, later found fame starring in comedies, especially the 'Anak Mami' series produced and directed by Datuk Dr A Razak Mohaideen.
"It is in these movies, 'Anak Mami' and its spin-off 'Mami Jarum', that I was introduced to moviegoers of the 2000s.
"Since then, I have also hosted TV programmes, especially entertainment- and women-related ones."
FIVE-TIME AWARD WINNER
Rosnah's popularity as a comedienne earned her four wins at the annual Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (ABPBH).
The mother of four and grandmother of five has also done serious dramas. One of them, 'Tersasar Di JalanMu', earned her the Best Actress award at Anugerah Skrin 2009.
"While I always feel at home in comedies as I am a cheerful person, serious roles also interest me, either villainous or tragic characters.
"You can call me a funny lady, but I'd prefer to be a serious funny lady, whose dramas and movies contain important lessons," she said, referring to her most recent flick, '3 Janda Melawan Dunia', in 2022.
Rosnah is grateful to return to work after the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Imagine two years without work. Everything cost money.
"I was careful during the economic downturn in 1997. I had several canteens, including one at Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), which I shared with my late brother.
"I later focused on my own canteen near Ampang Park and that lasted longer. I'm always careful to save for a rainy day," she added.
Asked about the "trend" of artistes asking for financial help, Rosnah described it as normal.
"This happens everywhere — those who can help will do so. But it is not fair to criticise just because we are artistes.
"Artistes are not rich if they don't have a business as a back-up. It's not enough if you only act."
POWER OF SUPPORTING ARTISTES
Rosnah hopes that the entertainment industry will recognise supporting artistes more.
"Supporting actors and actresses are very important for the success of a series or movie.
"There is no Cinderella without the fairy godmother and no Batman without Robin."
Rosnah, once called the Michelle Williams and Bette Midler of Malaysia, because of her short blonde hairstyle that resembled theirs. said: "I don't think I'm as talented as them, but I'm honoured as they are versatile actresses.
After 12 years of being a single mother, Rosnah married Tajul Effendi Isa, better known as Blue, in 2008.
These days, the couple organise entertainment events that Rosnah also emcees.

Zhang Yaodong expresses gratitude for support over being a stallholder in SG
Zhang Yaodong formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok, after he was spotted manning the stall in early June. Photos: Zhang Yaodong/TikTok, Xiaohongshu More than a week after Zhang Yaodong was spotted manning a steamed food stall in the Tampines industrial area, the Singapore-based Malaysian actor took to TikTok on June 11 to express his gratitude to his friends and supporters. The 47-year-old filmed it within the vicinity of his stall, starting the video by briefly panning over the signboard to show its offerings. Tagging the location as a coffeeshop at Blk 9012 Tampines Street 93, the former Mediacorp artiste formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok. He wrote in the caption: 'A new beginning. Thank you for being part of it. That day at the stall was a wake-up call. Your kindness gave me strength to reflect and figure out my next steps. The road ahead is mine to walk — and it's a path I've chosen for myself. I'll be sharing this journey with you.' In early June, a social media user posted the first sighting of Zhang standing in front of the cash register and appearing to be taking orders from customers. Amid the hustle and bustle, the user noted that he was polite and humble, and he was working that day because his employee had resigned. On March 18, a Facebook post by the Tampines Small and Medium Enterprises Association (TSMEA) indicated that Zhang's stall was newly opened during that period and serves traditonal steamed dishes like egg, meat, fish and prawns. Zhang said in his video: 'I know there were many friends, even loyal customers, who took pictures of me helping out here last week. I am very grateful for all the encouragement I've received on social media. 'I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people by my side who have been silently supporting me, as well as the friends who have come over after seeing the reports.' He also credited his long-time friend Catherine Chew for encouraging him to create a TikTok account. 'I'm touched by her sincerity, as well as her eagerness for the public to see another side of me. She has also introduced me to several bosses, who want to collaborate with me on TikTok in the future.' The bachelor's image took a hit in July 2024 when rumours surfaced about him fathering children out of wedlock with women of different nationalities. In November 2024, Zhang took to Instagram to commemorate his holiday to South Korea with his two daughters, confirming his fatherhood for the first time. In February, Mediacorp's talent management agency The Celebrity Agency stated it was no longer representing him and he has not participated in the filming of any new shows. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Empat is the name - Malaysian music legends team up with family members to become music's new super quartet
The dice has been set and it heralds a new beginning for Malaysian music and also for the South-East Asia entertainment scene. Meet the new quartet set to break new grounds in the local and international entertainment scene. They are aptly called Empat and will feature legendary singers and siblings Ziana Zain and Anuar Zain, along with their niece, award-winning singer Ernie Zakrie, and her husband Syamel, a well-known singer-composer who was also a member of Akademi Fantasia 2015 franchise. And then comes the 'Empat Live in KL 2025', which will be held at the Mega Star Arena on Oct 18. It will also mark the first concert collaboration between the four family members, each of whom has made a significant and lasting impacts on the Malaysian music industry. They will take to the stage in a performance of love for their fans who have shown immense support through ticket purchases shortly after the concert was announced last month. Already 85% of the concert tickets have been sold and it is expected to be sold out by end the month. And the love that they have received from their fans will see the four becoming a brand of their own with future collaborations. To start things off, the four top musicians among the superstars of Malaysian music for that long, will combine their skills for a new single in celebration of the concert. They are already working with Edry Abdul Halim of legendary group KRU for the new singles expected to hit the charts in August well before the concert. "This is not a one-off thing. That I can promise everyone. It is a great start and we all agreed that we want to continue with this new combination and we have several things planned for the group," said a happy Anuar Zain. "But one thing for sure, Empat is the new brand in town. That is for real. "Besides the concert, we have the upcoming single which we will announce to all soon. On the questions of coming out with a album, all four of us are not going there yet. It may come in the future, we will take everything step by step and the important part, is enjoying this new venture." As for the concert, organised by Anuar Zain Network and co-organised by Altus ProHouse -- Ziana Zain, who has been crooning unforgettable tunes for music lovers since 1991, said all four of them are overwhelmed by the support shown by the fans. "I can't wait for October. Words can't express what your support means to us. I hope October 18 becomes a phenomenon in the industry – it's the first time a family of artists is doing a concert like this. It will be our most memorable night,' said Ziana. She also has been preparing mentally and physically – hitting the gym and watching her diet. Ziana also teased fans about the concert content. "There will be many hit songs, and even some that haven't been performed in a long time will be revived on this night. Just like Anuar, Syamel, and Ernie, I'm focused on lyrics and mental preparation," said Ziana. "In many ways, this concert is our (Empat) gift of love and tribute to the journey of their artistic careers, and it will be performed with sheer magic on show night. This is our promise to you (fans)." Anuar Zain, Ernie Zakrie, and her husband Syamel also expressed their deep gratitude to the fans for their strong support. "I hope everyone who bought tickets will truly be present at Mega Star Arena on the night and be part of this beautiful memory we are creating together,' said Anuar. "With this family collaboration, we hope the concert will satisfy everyone and we are aiming to truly entertain all our fans. Expect some singalongs and interaction between us four and the audience… Let's bring the house down," he said. The Ernie-Syamel couple also said they are fully focused on preparing to deliver his best for the audience. "Right now, all four of us are preparing mentally and physically to give our all and satisfy our beloved fans. Come with open hearts and minds. Let's celebrate this beautiful moment together and create an unforgettable memory at Empat Live in Kuala Lumpur 2025," said Ernie. 'I can say this will be a historic night for me personally and for the industry – a first for a family of singers to perform together in such a major concert. This show wouldn't be possible without the fans. Everywhere I go, people say they've already bought tickets. It touches my heart and I can't wait to pour our love into the performance,' said Ernie. Syamel, too, feels this concert will be a beautiful, lasting memory – not just for the four of them, but for the loyal fans. "Those in the audience aren't just spectators – they're the heartbeat of this historic night. "We're not just singers – we're here to share love, stories, and the rollercoaster of our musical journey. I want the audience to travel and reminisce through the song selections that we'll present on October 18 at Mega Star Arena. It's my hope that our performance will truly touch their hearts,' said Syamel. Meanwhile, Sze Wan, the renowned music director, is at the helm of the historic concert. She is thrilled and describes the concert as a musical journey of Malaysian ballads that unites eras and generations, still well-loved by fans today. "Empat Live in Kuala Lumpur 2025 can be described as a musical journey, especially in the ballad genre, spanning from the era of diva Ziana Zain, to the phenomenon of 'Lelaki Ini' by Anuar Zain, wrapped in the modern vocal stylings and fusion genres brought to life by Ernie Zakri and Syamel,' shared Sze Wan. Ex-Category III star Amy Yip marks 59th b'day in HK, receives award from M'sia
Former Category III star Amy Yip was given the Actress of the 80s Era laurel by the Malaysia Dato Foundation earlier in January. Photo: China Press Former Category III actress Amy Yip recently marked her 59th birthday in style with a party at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong. The occasion drew a host of high-profile figures – including actors Bowie Wu and Raymond Wong, Emperor Capital Group chairperson Daisy Yeung, the mother of acclaimed actress Charmaine Sheh and more. Adding a fun touch to the night, Yip wowed guests with a lively performance of the 1980s classic It's A Small World , originally sung by Priscilla Chan. She also turned heads with two looks – one featuring a platinum blonde bob and black dress, reportedly inspired by American pop icon Lady Gaga's Poker Face era, and another with a neat updo and sparkling sequin dress, channeling the playful energy of Tinkerbell. In a speech, Yip said she threw the grand bash simply because she wanted to have fun and celebrate with all her friends. 'I believe that when you're kind to others, it will come back to you. Seeing so many guests dressed beautifully to attend my birthday party… I feel so touched,' she added. As for the highlight of the night, it came when Yip's Malaysian business partner Evian Chong took the stage to personally present her with the Most Influential Actress of the 80s Era award. The honour was bestowed by the Malaysia Dato Foundation, which celebrates the contributions of various individuals in their respective fields, earlier in January. 'I came from the film industry, but after meeting Evian, I got the opportunity to venture into the world of business and invest in hotels. I'll keep learning from her … This year has already been amazing, but I hope next year will be even better,' Yip said. For the record, Yip began investing in hotels after getting acquainted with Chong, managing director of Malaysian hospitality company Evians Holdings. The actress launched her first boutique hotel in Penang last year and has already invested in a second hotel in the state – a durian-themed establishment as she loves eating durian.
