MENTION the name Rosnah Mat Aris and an iconic television advertisement from the 1980s will come to mind.
In the Axion dishwashing paste commercial, Rosnah, a kampung eatery owner, introduces her long-suffering employee — played by the late actor-comedian Harun Salim Bachik — to the product.
Reminiscing about those days in a recent interview, Rosnah said: "I began acting in the 1980s, advertising Axion and many other products. I also starred in the popular TV3 Ramadan drama series 'Rumah Kedai' alongside Kartina Aziz and Harun."
She also fondly remembers her appearance in 'Naik Tangga Turun Tangga', the Malaysian version of the famous 1970s British drama series 'Upstairs Downstairs'.
"That was a very Malaysian take on the popular British TV series — about a rich family living upstairs in their bungalow and their employees who live downstairs. I played one of the workers."
Mentored by the late actor and television host Mustaffa Noor, Rosnah, now 69, later found fame starring in comedies, especially the 'Anak Mami' series produced and directed by Datuk Dr A Razak Mohaideen.
"It is in these movies, 'Anak Mami' and its spin-off 'Mami Jarum', that I was introduced to moviegoers of the 2000s.
"Since then, I have also hosted TV programmes, especially entertainment- and women-related ones."
FIVE-TIME AWARD WINNER
Rosnah's popularity as a comedienne earned her four wins at the annual Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (ABPBH).
The mother of four and grandmother of five has also done serious dramas. One of them, 'Tersasar Di JalanMu', earned her the Best Actress award at Anugerah Skrin 2009.
"While I always feel at home in comedies as I am a cheerful person, serious roles also interest me, either villainous or tragic characters.
"You can call me a funny lady, but I'd prefer to be a serious funny lady, whose dramas and movies contain important lessons," she said, referring to her most recent flick, '3 Janda Melawan Dunia', in 2022.
Rosnah is grateful to return to work after the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Imagine two years without work. Everything cost money.
"I was careful during the economic downturn in 1997. I had several canteens, including one at Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), which I shared with my late brother.
"I later focused on my own canteen near Ampang Park and that lasted longer. I'm always careful to save for a rainy day," she added.
Asked about the "trend" of artistes asking for financial help, Rosnah described it as normal.
"This happens everywhere — those who can help will do so. But it is not fair to criticise just because we are artistes.
"Artistes are not rich if they don't have a business as a back-up. It's not enough if you only act."
POWER OF SUPPORTING ARTISTES
Rosnah hopes that the entertainment industry will recognise supporting artistes more.
"Supporting actors and actresses are very important for the success of a series or movie.
"There is no Cinderella without the fairy godmother and no Batman without Robin."
Rosnah, once called the Michelle Williams and Bette Midler of Malaysia, because of her short blonde hairstyle that resembled theirs. said: "I don't think I'm as talented as them, but I'm honoured as they are versatile actresses.
After 12 years of being a single mother, Rosnah married Tajul Effendi Isa, better known as Blue, in 2008.
These days, the couple organise entertainment events that Rosnah also emcees.

#SHOWBIZ: Kael soars through 'Angkasa'

SINGER Kael is making a grand return to Malaysia with the new single 'Angkasa'. The modern pop ballad is the fourth single from Alternate Records and is a poignant collaboration between Kael, composer Omar K and music producer Iqie Hugh. 'Angkasa' is an ode to the power of love transcending physical separation. It draws inspiration from the idea of two souls connected across different realities — like day and night sharing the same sky — and explores themes of loyalty, enduring hope and finding beauty in life's imperfections. Omar K says the song's core message is to believe in the sincerity of love, no matter the circumstances. "If the love is genuine and strong, two people will always be united emotionally and spiritually, in the same 'Angkasa'," he says. The song's beauty lies in its minimalist yet emotive arrangement, which allows Kael's powerful and nuanced vocals to take centre stage. The melody is intentionally unconventional—it's both gentle and strong, melancholic and hopeful—creating a dramatic and cinematic atmosphere. With a mix of modern pop ballad sensibilities and subtle electronic elements, 'Angkasa' creates an ethereal soundscape that evokes a sense of emotional freedom. The lyrics, such as "Walau Bulan Dan Matahari Berbeza, Kau Pagi Dan Ku Malam, Tetap Di Angkasa Yang Sama" ("Even though the Moon and Sun are different, you are morning and I am night, we are still in the same Space"), are a modern-day love poem, speaking directly to the hearts of listeners. Kael, who was heavily involved in the writing, composition and visual development of the single, described the song as deeply personal. "It's a reflection of my most authentic self," says the 36-year-old artiste, whose real name is Michael Lean Chien Er. "The biggest challenge was to turn the words from my heart into a poetic and meaningful melody." He hopes the song will become a modern classic, suitable for special moments like weddings and anniversaries, or simply as a way to express appreciation for a loved one. The entire production of 'Angkasa' was a three-month-long process, from songwriting to recording. Kael's main vocal session, however, was completed in a single day, which Omar K attributes to the singer's professionalism and enthusiasm in the studio. Ultimately, Kael has high hopes for 'Angkasa', wishing for it to become a beloved track not just in Malaysia but across the region, putting Malaysian music on the global map. The single is now available to stream on all major digital platforms, including YouTube Music and Spotify.

Trump overhauls Kennedy Center, honours Sylvester Stallone, Strait, Gaynor, KISS, Crawford

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday named "Rocky" star Sylvester Stallone and country music great George Strait among the recipients of the Kennedy Centre Honours, as he pursues a controversial overhaul of the storied arts venue. Since returning to office in January, the Republican leader has declared war on what he calls "woke" viewpoints espoused in the nation's cultural institutions, including a fresh probe of content at several Smithsonian museums. The Kennedy Centre, a living monument to the late John F. Kennedy that opened in 1971, has long enjoyed bipartisan support but has been in the president's crosshairs, and he appointed himself board chairman in February. "We have completely reversed the decline of this cherished national institution," Trump told reporters at the stately white marble complex overlooking the Potomac River. "We ended the woke political programming." Also receiving the Kennedy Center Honors, one of the nation's highest arts awards for lifetime achievement, will be disco diva Gloria Gaynor, rock band KISS and British actor Michael Crawford, known for Broadway's "Phantom of the Opera." Trump announced he himself would host the awards gala, which usually takes place in early December and is later broadcast on CBS. "I did not insist, but I think it will be quite successful," he said. He also joked that he wanted an honor himself but was "never able to get one." Stallone, who at 79 is the same age as Trump, is a three-time Oscar nominee: for best actor and screenplay for the 1976 classic boxing flick "Rocky," and for best supporting actor, again in the Rocky Balboa role, in the 2015 follow-up "Creed." Trump called Stallone a "great actor." He is also a major Trump supporter and one of the president's "Hollywood ambassadors" along with Jon Voight and Mel Gibson. In November 2024, at a post-election event at Trump's Mar-a-Lago compound in Florida, Stallone called him "the second George Washington." Strait, 73, is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with more than 120 million records sold. He is known for huge hits like "All My Exes Live in Texas" and "Amarillo by Morning." "He's a good looking guy. Hope he still looks like that," Trump quipped. Gaynor, 81, is the singer behind the monster disco anthem "I Will Survive." KISS, formed in the 1970s in Trump's hometown New York City, gained fame with its shock rock performances and outlandish black and white face paint. "They work hard, and they're still working hard," the US president said. Crawford, 83, made his mark on British television in the 1970s before achieving international success by originating the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Phantom of the Opera," thrilling audiences with his powerful tenor voice. "I think he's one of the greatest talents I've ever actually seen," Trump said Wednesday. In his first term, from 2017 to 2021, the Republican president skipped the Kennedy Centre Honours gala because some of the artists receiving awards criticized him or said they would not attend in his presence. The Kennedy Centre is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and also offers theater, opera, comedy and other productions. Many artists associated with the centre, including opera singer Renee Fleming and musician Ben Folds, have cut ties with the institution since Trump took the reins. Others including comedian Issa Rae canceled performances. The producers of smash hit historical musical "Hamilton" opted to cancel a scheduled 2026 run, citing the end of "neutrality" at the centre. "We're restoring the Kennedy Centre as the premier venue for performing arts anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world," Trump said. "It was being run down, money wasn't being spent properly. They were building things they shouldn't have built that nobody wanted instead of taking care of the great gem that it is." The Smithsonian Institution, which runs a vast network of museums, said it was reviewing a White House letter announcing a probe of content aimed at removing "divisive or partisan narratives."
