Welshpool to host Montgomeryshire County Music Festival

A music festival that's been running for more than a century will be held in Welshpool for the first time.
The Montgomeryshire County Music Festival was established in 1921 and continues the tradition of performing larger choral works sung by amalgamating choirs from across north Powys.
However, due to spiralling costs and reduced funding, the festival needed to find a smaller venue for this year's performances.
Organisers said the Methodist Church in Welshpool proved to be an 'excellent' musical venue being the home of the town's Music Club.
For the event held on Saturday, May 10, the two affiliated choirs, Welshpool and Llanidloes Choral Societies, are augmented by individual singers from the county and the borders.
Patrick Larley, a freelance composer, conductor, tenor and keyboard player, returns to conduct the festival choir with a performance of Dvorak's Mass in D major and the ever-popular Sacred Songs by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins.
The choir will be joined on the night by soloists Sarah Anne Cromwell (soprano), Samantha Lewis (contralto), Wiliam Smith (tenor) and Ben Watkins (bass). Aeron Preston will accompany on the organ joined by his sister, Lowri Preston, on the cello.

Unshaven Huw Edwards spotted still wearing wedding ring despite 'marriage breakdown' reports

Huw Edwards, former BBC news presenter, is still wearing his wedding ring although his wife Vicky reportedly launched divorce proceedings in October 2024 Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has been spotted in public with his wedding ring still firmly on his finger, despite reports that his marriage to wife Vicky Flind has broken down. The disgraced broadcaster, 64, was photographed in Swansea earlier this week, marking his birthday with miniature bottles of prosecco. He was wearing his wedding band in the images. Edwards and Vicky Flind were married for three decades and share five children. However, it was reported in October 2024 that Flind had filed for divorce. Reports at the time suggested he had moved out of the family home and that their long marriage had come to an end. However, his wedding band was clearly visible in the photos taken in Wales, where he could be seen clutching three small bottles of fizz and a baseball cap while heading to his car. The sighting comes during his ongoing public fall from grace. Although he was once one of the most respected faces on British television, Edwards has largely vanished from the public eye since pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. He was sentenced in February to six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, after admitting to possessing seven Category A images – the most serious – alongside dozens of Category B and C images. Though Edwards avoided an immediate prison term, his sentencing made clear how close he came to jail. The court handed down a suspended sentence after hearing of his major depressive disorder and the considerable risks he would face in custody. Alongside the suspended sentence, Edwards was ordered to complete a 40-day Sex Offender Treatment Programme and attend 25 rehabilitation sessions to address both his mental health and alcohol use. He also lost his career over the incident, and Edwards resigned from the BBC in April 2024, a year after he last appeared on air to announce the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, the Welsh journalist has kept an extremely low profile, only being seen a handful of times. Earlier this year, he was photographed vaping in public, with onlookers describing him as "a shadow of his former, super-confident self". Flind, who is a TV producer, has not publicly commented on the current state of their relationship. She was previously praised for standing by Edwards during his mental health struggles and his wife's comment about his mental health problems at the time.

Extravagant whisky tribute appears at Welsh beauty spot

Extravagant whisky tribute appears at Welsh beauty spot The ornate wreath has been left in a 'little slice of heaven' but the landowner wants it removed The impressive display was left on the field without any permission The unexpected discovery of an elaborate commemorative wreath has left the owner of a Denbighshire field feeling confused after it was placed on his land without permission. Cremated remains were scattered alongside the wreath, which honours an elderly gentleman who appears to have enjoyed his whisky. ‌ The landowner, who wished to remain anonymous, fears the scenic location could turn into an unofficial memorial site for grieving relatives. He stumbled upon the carefully concealed wreath purely by accident in woodland on a slope overlooking Llangollen – though he believes it only appeared recently. ‌ His suspicions had been raised when a driver arrived at his property 150 yards away and asked where the graveyard was. ‌ He said: "The whole thing is bizarre. It's left me wondering what's going to happen next. What I don't want is to start finding windmills, teddy bears and plastic flowers on my land." The floral display has been expertly crafted and features a replica Famous Grouse whisky bottle made from artificial flowers. The display pays tribute to "Grandad" and "Great Grandad", reports North Wales Live. Yet its impressive workmanship has been overshadowed by the lack of any permission sought or granted for leaving it there. Article continues below The site of the wreath boasts a wonderful view Memorials and the scattering of ashes represents a mounting challenge within national parks such as Eryri (Snowdonia). Every plaque or monument on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) gets taken away as they may "detract from the feeling of wildness", whilst ash scattering is discouraged because it could "upset and inconvenience others". Due to the fact the Llangollen field is leased by a farmer and used for grazing sheep, artificial flowers aren't appropriate. "I can appreciate why someone might consider this place their little slice of heaven," he said. "There are wonderful views across the valley. "But I don't want my land turned into a place that becomes a shrine to someone else's loved one, and having a stream of visitors. Without understanding why this place has been chosen, it feels intrusive – it's left me feeling slightly violated. ‌ "I worry that if I remove it, someone enraged will start banging on my door asking where it's gone. I don't want to be unreasonable – there might be good reasons why the wreath was left here and that's what I'm now trying to find out." The landowner has been left confused by the strange ordeal He does however have a theory about what may have happened. He explained that during the 1950s, the field was home to a modest static caravan site featuring just five pitches. ‌ Following the site's closure in 1985 the landowner learnt that two regular guests had scattered their beloved ones' ashes across the field. Assuming the wreath may be linked to the former caravan pitch, he believes there could be a connection to a family called Milford who, during that period, were from Crosby in Merseyside. The family owned a caravan on the site until approximately 1982-83 and guests included relatives with the surname McAvoy (or Macavoy). Following his research, he sent online messages to two women thought to be relatives of the deceased person but he is yet to receive responses from either. ‌ He said: "I'm assuming no one would place a wreath there unless they have some kind of connection with the been suggested they might be relatives of former owners but my family has been here 70 years, so it's unlikely. "At the same time it's been 40 years since the caravan site closed, so that's a bit tenuous as well. I'm open and amenable to visits if a genuine connection is established but I'd prefer them to walk through the gate rather than push through the hedge." The wreath was positioned in a corner plot sheltered by leylandii planted by previous caravan owners. It has since become overgrown with bramble, hazel and hawthorn - but the hillside views remain just as captivating. Article continues below "I do get it," said the landowner. "This may have been someone's happy place, somewhere they could escape for a while. If it's who I think it is, I might be able to come to some kind of arrangement with his family if they contact me."
