Ford Recalls Over 8,50,000 Cars In US Due To Potential Fuel Pump Failure

NDTV11-07-2025
New York:
Ford is recalling more than 8,50,000 of its cars across the US because the low-pressure fuel pump inside the vehicles may fail - and potentially cause an engine stall while driving, increasing crash risks.
The recall covers a wide range of Ford and Lincoln-branded vehicles made in recent model years. That includes certain Ford Broncos, Explorers and F-150s, as well as Lincoln Aviators and Navigators, documents published this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration note.
Ford plans to send out notification letters to affected owners starting this Monday (July 14), to warn of safety risks related to potential fuel pump failure. But a remedy is still "under development," the NHTSA's recall report notes.
It wasn't immediately clear if there was an estimate for when a fix would become available. But this week's recall report noted that owners will receive an additional letter with instructions to take their car to an authorized dealer for that service when the time comes - and that there will be no charge.
The Associated Press reached out to Ford for further comments Thursday.
The Michigan-based automaker isn't aware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall, this week's report notes. But owners should look out for potential warnings. Prior to fuel pump failure, customers may encounter poor engine performance, for example, a check engine light or a decrease in engine power.
Fuel pump failure is "more likely to occur" during warm weather or if there's low fuel in the tank, the recall report notes. And loss of fuel pressure and flow can be caused by internal contamination of a car's jet pump, amid other factors. Ford also identified supplier changes during a review of the manufacturing process, the report adds.
Ford estimates that 10% of the 850,318 vehicles it's recalling in the U.S. have this fuel pump risk. The recall covers certain Ford Broncos, Explorers and Lincoln Aviators between the 2021 and 2023 model years, in addition to 2021-2023 model year F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD and F-550 SD vehicles. Select 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigators, Ford Mustangs and F-150s are also impacted, as well as some 2022 Expeditions.

NHTSA opens audit query into more than 137,000 Kia America vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had opened an audit into 137,256 Kia America vehicles on Friday to assess the effectiveness of the automaker's remedy for defective piston oil rings in some Seltos and Soul models. In February, Kia America launched a recall of the said Seltos and Soul vehicles, model year 2021-2023, over concerns that piston oil rings may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in engine damage causing a loss of motive power or an increased fire risk. The auto safety regulator said its Office of Defect Investigation 's recall division reviewed complaints that allege ineffectiveness and unavailability of recall remedy, as well as inconsistency in inspection results. The audit query will look into Kia's remedy measures in view of the 47 complaints received from April 29 through June 27, this year.

Ford raises projected tariff hit to results, shares drop 3%

Ford Motor said on Wednesday that U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles, as well as on steel and aluminum, will likely cost more than expected for the year, and the automaker's shares slid about 3 per cent in after-market trading. Ford reported that second-quarter results took an $800-million hit from tariffs, a less pronounced impact than some of its U.S. rivals thanks to Ford's strong domestic manufacturing base. For the full year, the automaker lifted the higher range of its projected gross hit to pretax adjusted profit from tariffs by $500 million, to $3 billion. Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company is in daily contact with the White House, with an ultimate goal of reducing its tariff costs, especially on parts tariffs. "We see there's a lot of upside depending on how the negotiation goes with the administration," Farley said. Chief Financial Officer Sherry House said Ford raised the projection because duties on Mexico and Canada have remained higher for longer than expected. She also cited elevated levies on aluminum and steel. The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker also issued guidance for annual results on Wednesday, after suspending it in May to assess the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. Ford said it now plans to record full-year adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion, down from its February 2025 projection of between $7 billion and $8.5 billion. For the latest quarter, the automaker reported a 21 per cent decrease in earnings per share to 37 cents, beating LSEG analysts' expectation of 33 cents. Ford recorded a net loss for the quarter of $36 million, which it said was primarily due to special charges related to cancellation of a three-row electric SUV, and field service actions from a $570-million recall. Ford posted revenue of $50.2 billion for the quarter, up 5 per cent from a year earlier. The automaker has clawed away market share from rivals with aggressive discounting programs and a "zero, zero, zero" campaign, which offers shoppers a $0 down payment, zero percent interest for 48 months, and zero payments for the first 90 days on most vehicles. "The substantial revenue outperformance demonstrates Ford's pricing power, but margin compression suggests underlying cost pressures remain problematic," CFRA Research analyst Garrett Nelson said in a note. Gasoline-powered vehicles notched a 15.5 per cent increase in the quarter on the back of these deals. Hybrid offers were also popular with shoppers in the quarter. Ford said results for the quarter ending in June were $800 million lower because of Washington's tariffs. Competitor General Motors reported steeper tariff headwinds, with a $1.1-billion hit for the quarter, largely from imports on its entry-level Chevrolet and Buick models made in South Korea. GM has projected a $4-billion to $5-billion tariff impact for the year, with plans to offset 30 per cent of that expense. Ford has said it expects to offset $1 billion of its gross tariff costs. Jeep-maker Stellantis said tariffs were expected to add $1.7 billion in expenses for the year. The White House did not reply to an email requesting comment on the automakers' projections. In the past, Trump has said the levies will bring manufacturing power and jobs back to the U.S. Ford boasts domestic production for around 80 per cent of the vehicles it sells in the U.S., about 25 per cent more than its two Detroit rivals, according to business analytics firm GlobalData's review of last year's imports. While this foundation has made it more resilient to tariffs, it still faces steep levies on aluminum, steel and copper that have rocked the industry. Additionally, executives have said that a pinched supply of rare earth magnets from China has disrupted production this quarter. Ford's EV investments and quality problems remained among its greatest challenges. Before tariffs hit, the automaker earlier this year said it expected to lose up to $5.5 billion on its EV and software business in 2025. It recorded a $1.3 billion operating loss on this segment for the quarter. Elimination of a $7,500 consumer tax credit in September is expected to additionally dampen EV sales growth. The automaker is also battling costly quality issues and an industry-topping volume of recalls. Reducing these problems has been a priority for Farley since he took on the role in 2020.

Ford delays electric pickup, van to 2028 as it chases smaller, affordable options

Ford Motor is delaying the launch of two next-generation electric vehicles as it shifts its focus to smaller and more affordable models, the company said on Thursday. The automaker said it recently informed suppliers that a full-size electric pickup, scheduled for production at its BlueOval City assembly plant in Tennessee, will be delayed from 2027 to 2028. In addition to this long-awaited successor to the F-150 Lightning electric pickup, Ford also delayed production of its E-transit van in Ohio from 2026 to 2028. "F-150 Lightning, America's best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today's customer needs," the company said, adding that it "will be nimble in adjusting our product launch timing to meet market needs and customer demand while targeting improved profitability." Automotive News earlier reported about the EV delays. Chinese automakers have been driving down costs on electric vehicle production and offering lower-cost models for shoppers. In response to this pressure, Ford and other car companies are focusing on producing affordable models on a streamlined platform, with a focus on delivering smaller electric vehicles. "The pure EV market in the U.S. seems to us very clear: small vehicles used for commuting and around town," Ford CEO Jim Farley told analysts on an earnings call last week. Ford, which has faced costly quality issues and leads the industry in recalls, previously projected losses of up to $5.5 billion in its electric vehicle and software operations for 2025. Last year, the company scrapped plans for a three-row electric SUV, with Farley later stating that larger EV models are not the company's primary focus as it develops future battery-powered vehicles. Ford is laying out plans for some of its upcoming EV models and technology August 11 at an event in Kentucky, Farley said.
