Anwar Wants UMS Not To Expel Students Involved In Anti-Graft Rally, Says Zambry
KOTA KINABALU, June 24 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has advised Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) not to expel students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said.
He said the prime minister's message was conveyed to the university to ensure that any disciplinary action taken would not jeopardise the students' future, particularly their opportunity to complete their studies at UMS.
'Just now, the Prime Minister called me and we discussed the matter. He requested that UMS students involved in the recent incident not be expelled from the university. For the Prime Minister, although they may have made a mistake, their future and education are more important and must be prioritised.
'This reflects the Prime Minister's compassion. Even though he was the main target during the incident, he conveyed his hope to me that the university would not expel the students involved,' Zambry said.

Cancelled HSR a missed opportunity to unite nations, says S'pore opposition leader
Singapore opposition leader Pritam Singh said the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail project had the potential to transform the way Malaysians and Singaporeans connect. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Singapore's opposition leader Pritam Singh said today the cancelled Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project was a missed opportunity to strengthen ties between both countries. Speaking on the 'Keluar Sekejap' podcast hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan, Pritam said the 350km rail line had the potential to transform the way Malaysians and Singaporeans connect. 'I think what would have been the cherry on the cake was the high-speed rail. It would have brought real changes. 'High-speed rail changes a lot of things; distances become so much shorter. It's a pity that it was shelved,' he said. The HSR, which would have cut travel time between KL and Singapore to 90 minutes, was cancelled in 2021 after both sides failed to agree on proposed changes. However, both governments have recently signalled a willingness to revisit the project. During the leaders' retreat in January, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya was open to reviving the HSR if it was fully funded by the private sector, while his Singapore counterpart Lawrence Wong said his government was open to listening to new proposals. Beyond infrastructure, Pritam urged Singaporeans to engage more deeply with Malaysia, suggesting student exchanges with Malaysian universities instead of favouring the US or UK. The Workers' Party secretary-general said Malaysia and Singapore were closely connected and should focus on practical cooperation. 'We are conjoined at the hip. A successful Malaysia benefits Singapore. We need more interaction, not less,' he said. Asked about public attitudes, Pritam said some Singaporeans might come across as unfriendly, but most of them valued Malaysia. 'You go and speak to a Singaporean on the street and ask, 'Do you like going to Johor Bahru?' Of course they do, even if it's just for a short trip,' he said.

Qatar's initiative to broker ceasefire successfully defused tensions in Middle East, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's initiative to broker a ceasefire between Iran, Israel and the United States has successfully defused tensions in the Middle East, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister described the move as a crucial step that averted a larger confrontation and conflict in the region. "I also had a call with the Emir of Qatar, His Royal Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, this afternoon. I expressed my appreciation for his vital role in securing the ceasefire among Iran, Israel, and the United States. "This is an important step that successfully defused tensions and prevented a larger confrontation and conflict in the Middle East," Anwar said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 24). According to Anwar, Sheikh Tamim informed him that despite Qatar being in a difficult position, being drawn into the conflict, he still chose to focus on the bigger picture for regional peace. "I appreciate his steadfastness and sincerity in supporting these peace efforts, including Qatar's continuous role in ceasefire negotiations between Palestine and Israel," he said. Anwar added that Sheikh Tamim also informed him that he had contacted US President Donald Trump and discussed the peace efforts. "He used the opportunity to urge the United States to focus on efforts towards stopping the genocide in Gaza and establishing a just and lasting peace," he said. The Prime Minister reiterated that Malaysia would continue to support all endeavours towards a peaceful resolution based on the principles of justice and sovereignty. "Honest negotiations that respect the rights of every nation are an absolute prerequisite for building lasting peace in the region and throughout the world," Anwar stated. – Bernama
