Miley Cyrus reveals 'traumatic' health scare and powering through 'medical emergency' during live TV special: 'excruciating'
For Miley Cyrus, an "extremely excruciating" pain preceded Something Beautiful.
The pop star and Disney channel alumna this week spoke candidly about her mental, emotional and physical health, unveiling that she powered through a "medical emergency" during her live New Year's Eve PartyTV special three years ago.
The Grammy-winning Flowersmusician said she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture.
"We didn't know exactly what was going on, but it was pretty traumatic, 'cause it was extremely excruciating," she told DJ and Apple Music interviewer Zane Lowe in a far-ranging conversation published Wednesday. "I did the show anyways."
The Wrecking Balland Party In The U.S.Asinger, 32, rang in 2023 for NBC, co-hosting her Miley's New Year's Eve Partywith godmother and music icon Dolly Parton.
During the special, produced by Saturday Night Liveboss Lorne Michaels, Cyrus performed live, taking the stage alongside Parton, Paris Hilton, Sia and Fletcher. Latto, Rae Sremmurd and Liily were also among the musical acts who joined the New Year's celebration.
Cyrus, who said she couldn't pass up an opportunity to work with both Michaels and Parton, told Lowe the holiday gig "was really hard on me" and did not go into further detail about the health scare.
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in an ovary or on its surface. Cysts are common and can often be harmless and cause little to no discomfort, but larger cysts can bring about symptoms including pelvic pain, abdominal pressure and bloating, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cysts can "become twisted or burst open," causing "pain and bleeding inside the pelvis."
The Hannah Montanastar also opened up about a polyp on her vocal cords, which makes live performances feel like "running a marathon with the weights on," and her sobriety journey.
Cyrus has been in the public eye since childhood and in recent years has spoken about her struggles with addiction.
In December 2020, she told Rolling Stone about her drug and alcohol use and how the young, drug-related deaths of artistes including Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix prompted her to "pull my[self] together before I'm 27."
For Cyrus, sobriety hasn't always been a straightforward path, but this week she said "sobriety is... like my God."
"I need it. I live for [it]. It's changed my entire life," she said before acknowledging there was a moment she "fell apart" in recent years. "I was so close to who's sitting here right now but... [life] had more lessons for me."
Cyrus, who won her first career Grammy for Flowersin 2024, is on the verge of a new, theatrical and fashionable era. Her ninth studio album, Something Beautifulis due May 30 and will be accompanied by a film in June.
"This era marks another bold artistic evolution for Miley, blending music and film into an immersive experience," according to an announcement shared to her Instagram page.
"Something Beautiful," Cyrus said in the Apple Music chat, " couldn't [be] any more personal to me."
She added: "Every single string, sound... sequin, strand of hair, eye lash has been considered and created not only something that I love but something that I'm excited to share with [fans.]"–Los Angeles Times/Tribune News Service

The Food Network, where Burrell began her two-decade television career on Iron Chef America and went on to other shows, confirmed her death. The cause was not immediately clear, and medical examiners were set to conduct an autopsy. Police were called to her address before 8am Tuesday and found an unresponsive woman who was soon pronounced dead. The police department did not release the woman's name, but records show it was Burell's address. Burrell was on TV screens as recently as April, making chicken Milanese cutlets topped with escarole salad in one of her many appearances on NBC's Today show. She faced off against other top chefs on the Food Network's House Of Knives earlier in the spring. "Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent - teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring,' the network said in a statement. Known for her bold and flavourful but not overly fancy dishes, and for her spiky platinum-blonde hairdo, Burrell and various co-hosts on Worst Cooks In America led teams of kitchen-challenged people through a crash course in savory self-improvement. On the first show in 2010, contestants presented such unlikely personal specialties as cayenne pepper and peanut butter on cod, and penne pasta with sauce, cheese, olives and pineapple. The accomplished chefs had to taste the dishes to evaluate them, and it was torturous, Burrell confessed in an interview with The Tampa Tribune at the time. Still, Burrell persisted through 27 seasons, making her last appearance in 2024. "If people want to learn, I absolutely love to teach them,' she said on ABC's Good Morning America in 2020. "It's just them breaking bad habits and getting out of their own way.' Burrell was born Sept 21, 1969, in the central New York town of Cazenovia, where her parents ran a flower store. She earned an English and communications degree from Canisius University and went on to a job as a headhunter but hated it, she said in a 2008 interview with The Post-Standard of Syracuse. Having always loved cooking, she soon enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America, for which she later taught. She graduated in 1996, spent a year at an Italian culinary school and then worked in upscale New York City restaurants for a time. "Anytime Anne Burrell gets near hot oil, I want to be around,' Frank Bruni, then-food critic at the New York Times , enthused in a 2007 review. Burrell's own tastes, she said, ran simple. She told The Post-Standard her favourite food was bacon and her favourite meal was her mother's tuna fish sandwich. "Cooking is fun,' she said. "It doesn't have to be scary. It's creating something nurturing.' Survivors include her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in 2021, and his son, her mother and her two siblings. 'Lilo & Stitch' actor David Hekili Kenui Bell dies at 57

The death of Bell, who played, was announced Sunday in a Facebook post penned by his older sister. A cause of death was not listed. 'It is with a heavy heart that I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father,' wrote Jalene Kanani Bell. 'While I didn't grow up with a Father, David gave me all the unconditional love I could possibly ask for and I believe that all his family and friends received the same from him.' Bell's sister shared that he 'loved being an actor, doing voice-overs, spending time with Brutus travelling as an ambassador for Kona Brew. … He went to Punahou and Kalani while our dad spoke Hawaiian so his ability to deliver lines with English understanding, Indigenous knowledge and Pidgen to da Max… made him a diamond in the rough.' She recalled Bell getting 'the best seats in the house' for their family to watch Lilo & Stitch together on opening night. On May 28, Bell shared his audition footage for the film, in which he was credited as David H K Bell, along with behind-the-scenes peeks at his time working on the film. Bell made his screen debut in a 2014 episode of the Hawaii Five-0 reboot and appeared in two episodes of the rebooted Magnum P.I. in 2018 and 2019.
