Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly have set timeline for T.J. Watt contract extension

Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt has been sitting out of organized team activities as he awaits an extension that will make him one of the highest-paid NFL players ever. While negotiations aren't being rushed, the organization reportedly has a timeline for a deal to be reached. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers expect a contract extension to be in place before Week 1. The two sides remain in negotiations and the front office seems to have confidence that Watt will be signed to a long-term deal by September. Advertisement Related: Steelers made 'significant' T.J. Watt contract offer T.J. Watt stats: 27 QB hits, 19 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries Notably, per Dulac, one holdup in the negotiations could be the length of the contract. Watt turns 31 years old in October and the franchise would understandably want to avoid a deal that pays him a lot of guaranteed money into his mid-30s. Pittsburgh avoided just that with wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, signing the 27-year-old to an extension that ends before his age-33 season. Negotiations between the two sides haven't come without some anxious moments. In April, Watt posted a picture on Instagram of himself in a Steelers' uniform as he walked off the field and signaled farewell to the fans. Watt's brother also made it clear that the perennial All-Pro pass rusher won't give the team any discount. Related: Insider shares likely cost of T.J. Watt contract extension for Pittsburgh Steelers Considering the contract Watt's peer Myles Garrett received – $160 million over four years with $123.5 million guaranteed – any deal from Pittsburgh will need to start at $40 million annually. The 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year might also want to beat the total Garrett is receiving in the first three years of his deal, $100 million, which would make Watt the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL. Watt contract (Spotrac): $30.418 million cap hit in 2025, NFL free agent in 2026 While Watt is a free agent at the end of the 2025 NFL season, there's no reason to believe that Pittsburgh is in any danger of losing him next offseason. A contract extension is likely to be signed this summer, all but ensuring that Watt spends his entire Hall of Fame career in Pittsburgh. Steelers' Mike Tomlin: We want hotter practices for 'more stressful environment'

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is turning up the heat on his team — literally. Tomlin is moving the Steelers' training camp practices to the afternoon this summer; he explained the rationale. "Wasn't hot enough last year. To be quite honest with you, heat aids in the development of physical conditioning. It makes it a more stressful environment, and that's what we go to camp for," Tomlin said on Thursday after the Steelers' mandatory minicamp, according to "We go to camp to get better, and if it's a little bit more miserable late in the day, man, that's what we want." Pittsburgh will hold its 2025 training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, which is roughly one hour east of Acrisure Stadium, home of the Steelers. As for stories to keep tabs on with the Steelers this summer, they recently added 41-year-old quarterback and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, who will be throwing passes to star wide receiver and two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf, whom Pittsburgh acquired from the Seattle Seahawks this offseason. Superstar linebacker T.J. Watt hasn't been present for the team's minicamp this week, as he seeks an extension; Watt, a four-time All-Pro, is entering the final year of a four-year, $112 million deal. Tomlin expressed that he's "optimistic" a deal will eventually be worked out with Watt. The Steelers are coming off a 10-7 season that saw them lose to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC wild-card round. Tomlin is entering his 19th season as Pittsburgh's head coach, with the team never posting a losing season and owning a combined 183-107-2 regular-season record and 8-11 postseason record under him. All that said, the Steelers haven't won a playoff game since the 2016 season. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Bryson DeChambeau narrowly evades massive rules blunder at US Open

This wasn't the start defending U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau likely envisioned. The two-time major winner almost committed a massive rules gaffe Thursday as the 2025 U.S. Open got underway at Oakmont Country Club, when his shot out of the bunker on the par-5 fourth hole landed on a crosswalk and he opted to take free relief. The drama unfolded as DeChambeau placed the ball on the ground at the nearest point of relief instead of taking the drop — with a rules official signaling the mistake. Upon learning he would be assessed a one-stroke penalty, the LIV Golf star made the proper drop to avoid a violation. 'That was dumb,' DeChambeau muttered as he continued to play and ultimately parred the hole. DeChambeau, looking to capture his second straight U.S. Open title, finished the opening round with two birdies and five bogeys for a score of 3-over 73. 4 Bryson DeChambeau didn't get off to a smooth start at the 2025 U.S. Open. DeChambeau, 31, was one of several of the sport's biggest stars who struggled at the Pittsburgh-area course Thursday. 4 Bryson DeChambeau shot out of the bunker on the par-5 fourth hole at Oakmont Country Club on June 12, 2025.
