Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 18: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Todaya day ago
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 18 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 18 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 18 wearer: QB Will Howard
Selected with the 185th pick in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, fan-favorite rookie QB Will Howard is the current No. 18 on the Steelers roster. After finishing his Ohio State career as a National Champion, Howard carries the hopes of Steelers fans wishing he can become the next great franchise quarterback — and he has the perfect mentor in Aaron Rodgers to potentially turn this dream into reality.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 18:
Best No. 18 in Steelers history: WR Diontae Johnson
Arguably the best Steeler to ever wear No. 18 is Diontae Johnson. Selected with the 66th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson wasted little time making an impact on the Steel City brand of football — earning a Second-Team All-Pro selection as a punt returner during his rookie season. He was also named to the 2021 Pro Bowl.
During his five seasons in Pittsburgh, Johnson caught 391 passes for 4,363 yards — the ninth-most by a Steeler all-time — and 25 touchdowns. Despite leaving the Steel City on bad terms and struggling to make an impact outside of Pittsburgh, his performance as a Steeler leaves him deserving of being named the greatest to wear No. 18.

Eagles' Saquon Barkley puts devaluation of running backs' contracts on handful of franchises

Saquon Barkley played a key role in the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl-winning season – so much so that a narrative emerged about a resurgence of the running back position. Barkley suggested in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated that talk of a resurgence implied not that talented running backs were lacking in recent years, but that teams had grown reluctant to hand out large contracts, causing compensation for elite rushers to dip. The three-time Pro Bowler said he believed the dip stemmed from "three to four" high-profile running backs signing big deals and subsequently getting injured. Barkley called the devaluation of running backs a narrative that was designed to keep salaries down. "(It) wasn't, like, a diss to just me," Barkley told the outlet. "It's something they were trying to make up, just so they can get players for cheaper value. And if you make that argument for running backs, you can do that for any position in the NFL." "Now, you have owners and GMs trying to find great players for cheaper value," Barkley said. "That's what it all was. I got tagged. Josh Jacobs got tagged (by the Las Vegas Raiders)." "I'm not going to sit here and say there was colluding. I'm not going into all that. But football is football. If you cannot run the ball, you're done." Barkley pointed out that teams routinely sign wide receivers to big contracts as they enter their 30s, and if those players underperform, it isn't discussed nearly as much as when running backs hit that stage of their careers. "That (past prime) notion is so funny," Barkley said. "It's bunk, all the running-back-position-is-dying stuff. You got wide receivers who [teams] pay all this money to, and when they get into their 30s, they're not performing at the highest level; you just never hear that. How many quarterbacks can you name who played into their later 30s? Everyone's not Tom Brady. They have to let that go!" Last season, the 28-year-old delivered one of the best rushing seasons in NFL history. In 16 games — he sat out Week 18 ahead of the playoff run — Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards on 345 attempts with 13 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He led the league in rushing yards, attempts and yards per game. Barkley carried that dominance into the postseason, rushing for 499 yards on 91 attempts with five touchdowns in four playoff games — leading all running backs in each category. Now, Barkley will look to help lead the Eagles in their pursuit of another Super Bowl ring when they open the season against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

Lions' Aidan Hutchinson keeps focus on return to field during contract extension talks

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Aidan Hutchinson's value to the Detroit defense became painfully apparent when the top-seeded Lions were bounced by Washington in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs last season. The Lions failed to sack Jayden Daniels during the Commanders' 45-31 victory while Hutchinson watched as his broken tibia and fibula continued to heal. Putting an exact dollar figure on Hutchinson's worth could be the tricky part as Detroit's front office and the star defensive end's representatives try to work out a new contract. While the Lions have already exercised their $19,782,000 option on Hutchinson's contract for 2026, the 2023 Pro Bowler is eligible for an extension. Hutchinson has tried to concentrate on getting ready for the season and isn't sure how long the negotiations might last. 'I've kind of been pretty hands-off in the process,' he said after a joint practice between Detroit and Houston on Thursday. 'The business side can take away your love of the game a little bit. That's kind of the reality in the NFL.' T.J. Watt's three-year, $123 million extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers with $108 million guaranteed could provide a baseline for Hutchinson's next contract. 'I have a lot of people in my close circle that do deal with that,' said Hutchinson, the second pick of the 2022 draft. 'My main focus is out here playing football and playing the game I love.' That was taken away from him during the fifth game of last season, when fellow lineman Alim McNeill fell on his leg during a 47-9 win over Dallas. Hutchinson already had 7 1/2 sacks and was well on his way to another Pro Bowl season. He was cleared medically in May and hasn't suffered any setbacks during training camp. Any concerns about the strength of his surgically repaired leg were alleviated when he got leg-whipped by a linebacker during a goal-line play in practice three weeks ago. 'It was right smack dab where Alim hit me a few months ago,' Hutchinson said. 'I got up and shook it out. When you can get leg-whipped, you start to have that confidence where, 'I have a steel rod in my leg and that thing's not going anywhere.'' Hutchinson hasn't played this preseason and, as with the other Detroit starters, that isn't expected to change in the preseason finale against the Texans on Saturday. The first units for both teams faced each other during Thursday's practice, working on situations such as red zone and two-minute execution. Hutchinson was matched up against tackle Tytus Howard. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Hutchinson looked as fierce as ever in the scrimmage. 'With as tough an injury as he had to go through, it's cool to see him back out working and he's still bringing it on the edge,' Ryans said. 'I thought Tytus did a really nice job today. Of course, Aidan got him a couple of times and Tytus got him a couple of times. But that's two pros working together.' 'I feel like I'm in a really good spot right now,' he said. 'I'm just trying to carry all this momentum into Week 1 and stay hot throughout the whole season.' ___
