5 Steelers on the roster bubble heading into training camp
Training camp is one of the best opportunities for players to prove why they belong on the 53-man roster — and the Steelers have their fair share of competitors on the roster bubble. In Pittsburgh, these five players are hanging onto a chance to make the final cut — and they'll need a strong showing in Latrobe to keep their Steel City dreams alive. CB Brandin Echols After the acquisition of star CB Jalen Ramsey, the newly signed Echols seems to be the odd man out on the Steelers secondary. The former Jets cornerback could definitely use a standout performance in Latrobe — as depth cornerbacks like James Pierre and Cory Trice Jr. hold the edge in familiarity on Steelers defense. P Corliss Waitman With the starting spot at punter likely up for grabs, it's difficult to say whether Waitman or the now-healthy Cameron Johnston has the edge in the positional battle. Only one punter will make the final roster — and although Waitman showed flashes of brilliance, Johnston's experience may prove more beneficial for Pittsburgh in the long run. RB Cordarrelle Patterson The Steelers completely overhauled the running back room this offseason — and Patterson's receiving/return abilities may not be able to save him a spot on the Steelers roster 2025 — but a return to form at training camp may do the trick. LB Mark Robinson Robinson is also facing stiff competition to make the roster on a retooled defense, as the newly acquired Malik Harrison and the now-healthy Cole Holcomb could slam the door shut on any hopes of making the 2025 roster. DE DeMarvin Leal Leal hasn't quite lived up to expectations since being drafted by Pittsburgh with the 84th overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The fourth-year Steeler seems to be on the outside looking in after the 2025 NFL Draft and may need an almost perfect training camp outing to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 51: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 51 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 51 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 51 wearer: LB Nick Herbig Nick Herbig, one of the most underrated Steelers on defense, currently wears No. 51 on the roster. Drafted with the 132nd pick in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Herbig burst onto the scene as an explosive pass rusher, with shades of his mentor, T.J. Watt, evident throughout his game. Over the past two seasons, Herbig was seen more and more opportunity on defense — with 2025 potentially serving as the season all the pieces align for the third-year edge rusher. Last five Steelers to wear No. 51: Best No. 51 in Steelers history: LB James Farrior No Steeler has worn No. 51 better than James Farrior. Drafted by the New York Jets with the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft, Farrior signed with Pittsburgh in 2002 — where he would go on to become one of the most dependable inside linebackers in Steelers history. In his 10 seasons in the Steel City, from 2002 to 2011, Farrior produced 1,085 combined tackles, 82 tackles for loss, 30 sacks, and 12 forced fumbles in 154 games — all of which were starts. He won two Super Bowls with Pittsburgh, as well as earning First-Team All-Pro and Second-Team All-Pro selections, and was named to two Pro Bowls. Farrior was later inducted into the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor — and it's his consistency, as well as his dedication to excellence, that make him the definitive choice as the greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 51. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 52: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 52 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 52 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 52 wearer: N/A There isn't a current Steeler wearing No. 52 — and for good reason, as the number has remained unofficially retired since the greatest to wear it left Pittsburgh. Last five Steelers to wear No. 52: Best No. 52 in Steelers history: C Mike Webster Mike Webster is without a doubt the best Steeler to ever wear No. 52. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 125th overall pick in the fifth round of the 1974 NFL Draft, Webster spent 15 years with the Steelers, from 1974 to 1988 — playing in 220 games and starting in 194 of them. The anchor of the Steelers' offensive line that helped kickstart a dynasty, Webster helped bring four Super Bowl championships to the Steel City. He was named First-Team All-Pro six times, Second-Team All-Pro twice, and earned nine Pro Bowl selections. Webster was also named to both the NFL 1970s and 1980s All-Decade Teams, as well as the NFL 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997, in addition to being recognized on the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team and in the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor. No Steeler has worn No. 52 since — and no one ever should, as Webster's legacy is second to none. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like.

NFL Top 100 Players of 2025: Steelers' Cam Heyward selection up 15 spots than last year
The first Steeler has cracked the NFL Top 100 Players of 2025 list — and it's none other than veteran DT Cameron Heyward. Heading into his 15th season, Heyward was selected as the 83rd-best player in 2025 — up 15 spots from his selection at No. 98 last year. Heyward's 2025 ranking still doesn't do his play justice, as he seemingly reversed the hands of father time last season, accumulating eight sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and 20 QB hits — leading to his fourth First-Team All-Pro selection. Even at 36 years old, Heyward is one-of-one at the defensive tackle position in the NFL — but it's his wisdom and veteran experience that will be invaluable to the development of two Steelers rookies: first-round DT Derrick Harmon and fifth-round DT Yahya Black. Heyward isn't looking to simply pass the torch in 2025 — he has Super Bowl aspirations alongside what's shaping up to be an incredibly stacked Steelers roster. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 53: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 53 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 53 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 53 wearer: OLB Eku Leota Heading into the 2025 season, OLB Eku Leota is the current Steelers wearer of No. 53. The outside linebacker signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 — where he would remain until being released on September 21, 2024. Less than two weeks later, the Steelers signed Leota to their practice squad — ultimately appearing in just one game in 2024 for Pittsburgh. He would sign a Future/Reserve contract this past January — but faces stiff competition to make the 53-man roster due to a loaded outside linebacker room. Last five Steelers to wear No. 53: Best No. 53 in Steelers history: C Maurkice Pouncey When it comes to No. 53, no Steeler wore it better than C Maurkice Pouncey. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Pouncey served as a long-time leader of the Steelers' offensive line for over a decade, tasked with protecting the legendary Ben Roethlisberger. He played in 134 career games and started every one of those contests for the Steelers. Pouncey's stellar play resulted in two First-Team All-Pro selections and three Second-Team All-Pro selections — while also being named to nine Pro Bowls. For his achievements, he was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team — and there is no honor more befitting than to be recognized as the greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 53.
