5 Steelers on the roster bubble heading into training camp

USA Today6 days ago
Training camp is one of the best opportunities for players to prove why they belong on the 53-man roster — and the Steelers have their fair share of competitors on the roster bubble. In Pittsburgh, these five players are hanging onto a chance to make the final cut — and they'll need a strong showing in Latrobe to keep their Steel City dreams alive.
CB Brandin Echols
After the acquisition of star CB Jalen Ramsey, the newly signed Echols seems to be the odd man out on the Steelers secondary. The former Jets cornerback could definitely use a standout performance in Latrobe — as depth cornerbacks like James Pierre and Cory Trice Jr. hold the edge in familiarity on Steelers defense.
P Corliss Waitman
With the starting spot at punter likely up for grabs, it's difficult to say whether Waitman or the now-healthy Cameron Johnston has the edge in the positional battle. Only one punter will make the final roster — and although Waitman showed flashes of brilliance, Johnston's experience may prove more beneficial for Pittsburgh in the long run.
RB Cordarrelle Patterson
The Steelers completely overhauled the running back room this offseason — and Patterson's receiving/return abilities may not be able to save him a spot on the Steelers roster 2025 — but a return to form at training camp may do the trick.
LB Mark Robinson
Robinson is also facing stiff competition to make the roster on a retooled defense, as the newly acquired Malik Harrison and the now-healthy Cole Holcomb could slam the door shut on any hopes of making the 2025 roster.
DE DeMarvin Leal
Leal hasn't quite lived up to expectations since being drafted by Pittsburgh with the 84th overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The fourth-year Steeler seems to be on the outside looking in after the 2025 NFL Draft and may need an almost perfect training camp outing to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin shares the 'challenge' in coaching QB Aaron Rodgers

There may be no stronger bond in the Steelers organization right now than that of Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers — but that doesn't mean coaching the 20-year veteran is a walk in the park. At Steelers training camp, NFL Network's Kyle Brandt sat down with Tomlin for a quick one-on-one interview, discussing a variety of topics with the longtime head coach — but one question stood out above the rest: what is the challenge in coaching Rodgers? "'Cause he's seen it and done it all," Tomlin said. "Everything's a re-run. And it's my job to make sure that he's engaged, that he's having fun, that the things that attracted him to the game 20 years ago still resonate with him — that he feels it, in this environment, today." Rodgers admitted earlier this year that he was heavily considering retirement — but recently told Brandt that his connection with Tomlin and the personal talks they shared played a huge role in his decision to join Pittsburgh. If Rodgers leads the offense to the promised land in 2025 — ending the almost nine-year playoff win drought in the process — Tomlin will undoubtedly deserve more credit for bringing the four-time MVP to the Steel City. Marco Wilson injury: Bengals defensive back hurt during training camp, could miss weeks

Cincinnati Bengals defensive back Marco Wilson suffered an apparent injury during training camp near Paycor Stadium. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor didn't provide details about Wilson's injury after Sunday's practice, but did designate Wilson as "week to week" because of it. During the Bengals' Week 16 win against Cleveland in 2024, head coach Zac Taylor didn't appear to be happy with officials after Wilson was flagged for defensive pass interference for his coverage of Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy during the third quarter. The Bengals claimed Wilson off waivers in November 2024. Wilson, a fourth-round pick out of Florida in the 2021 NFL draft, also has played for the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals. Bills' newest WR abruptly retires before playing a game in Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills just signed a new wide receiver earlier this week. But it turns out he won't be playing for the Bills, or any NFL team, after all. On Saturday, Buffalo placed David White on the reserve/retired list. The 25-year old pass catcher is stepping away from football. White was an undrafted rookie in 2024 who had spent his college career at Valdosta State and then Western Carolina. He signed with the Jaguars out of college, but he tore his ACL in OTAs and never got to suit up for the Jags. The Bills signed White on July 22, but he had retired by July 26. MORE: Bills' James Cook contract saga doesn't lessen his importance to Super Bowl aspirations Over four college seasons, two apiece at Valdosta State and WCU, White had 94 catches for 1,442 yards and 19 TDs. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver out of Jacksonville always looked the part. White did make it to Bills training camp before retiring. He's pictured signing autographs for fans in one photograph from earlier in the week. But, whether for injury or a different reason, White's NFL career now appears abruptly over.
