Officials briefed the Minister on the progress made in visa reforms. The number of visa sub-categories has been reduced from 26 to 22, and the earlier 104 sub-classifications have been streamlined to 69. As a result, the average visa issuance time has dropped significantly, with 65.15% of all visas in 2024 being issued as e-Visas.
To further strengthen immigration control, two new portals — District Police Module (DPM) and Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) — have been launched. These platforms aim to improve tracking of overstayers and illegal immigrants at the district level.
The modernization of Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) was also reviewed. Officials reported that the number of ICPs has increased from 82 in 2014 to 114, including 37 air, 37 road, 34 sea, and 6 railway posts. Automated travel document scanning and biometric enrollment facilities have been introduced to expedite processing.
The Fast-Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), currently operational in eight major airports, allows pre-verified passengers to clear immigration in under a minute. This facility will soon be extended to seven more airports, including Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Amritsar.
Additionally, the revamped OCI portal has facilitated the issuance of nearly 50 lakh Overseas Citizen of India cards. A dedicated mobile app for CAA-2019 applicants from six minority groups in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh has also been launched. Commending the officials, Bandi Sanjay directed that all reforms and public-facing services be effectively communicated at the grassroots level to ensure ease of access and transparency for citizens.

The PDP leader said that the people of J&K gave Abdullah a historic mandate to fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre. 'If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' said Para.

Work underway on 10 new nuclear reactors: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has introduced major reforms in the nuclear power sector and opened the doors in this segment to the private sector as the country aims to move towards energy independence . Addressing the nation on Independence Day, the prime minister said work is underway on 10 new nuclear reactors as India is moving to increase nuclear power generation capacity by over tenfold by 2047. "Keeping in mind the future of energy, Bharat is also undertaking major initiatives in nuclear energy," he said. To have an active partnership with the private sector towards achieving this goal, the FY26 Union budget had proposed to bring amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act. The two Acts were introduced in the context of a state-owned nuclear thrust. The idea now is to encourage private sector participation as the clean energy requirement is set to rise in line with India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. "We are dependent on many countries for our needs for petrol, diesel and gas... It is important to make the country 'atmanirbhar' in energy," he said. The prime minister stressed the importance of energy independence, saying this will be done for the bright future of youth and for the welfare of farmers. "Reform is a continuous process. As time progresses and situation arises, we need to keep reforming," Modi said. While the world debates global warming, India has achieved its target of meeting 50 per cent of its energy needs from clean sources in 2025, five years ahead of timeline. The country's solar power capacity has increased 30 times in 11 years, he added. India is making new dams so that hydro power can be developed and we get clean energy, and investing in green hydrogen mission.

In Independence Day speech, CM Revanth Reddy urges Centre to clear BC quota bills
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday urged the Centre to approve Telangana's landmark bills providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education and employment. The CM was addressing the gathering after hoisting the national flag during the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at Golconda Fort. Citing figures from the socio-economic survey conducted by the state government, covering 1.12 crore families, Revanth said the findings revealed that BCs constitute 56.33% of the state's population. 'Based on this data, our government has introduced 42% reservation for BCs. The bills passed by the state legislature have been sent to the Centre for approval. On this historic occasion, I urge the Union government to clear the bills,' he said. Revanth underscored his government's commitment to social justice, highlighting that Telangana is the first state in the country to implement Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorisation following a Supreme Court verdict, classifying 59 sub-castes into three distinct groups. The chief minister also painted a stark picture of the state's fiscal health, revealing that the Congress government had inherited a staggering debt burden of Rs 8,21,652 crore. This included Rs 6,71,757 crore in borrowings, Rs 40,154 crore in pending employee dues and scheme liabilities, and Rs 1,09,740 crore in obligations under the SC/ST sub-plan, Singareni Collieries, and the power sector, he said. Despite these constraints, the government has serviced Rs 2,20,676 crore in debt — Rs 1,32,498 crore in principal and Rs 88,178 crore in interest — while continuing welfare initiatives, he added. 'Mahalakshmi scheme benefitted women, RTC' Revanth, meanwhile, said that the Mahalakshmi scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, was a success. 'Launched within 48 hours of the government taking charge, the initiative has issued over 200 crore zero-fare tickets, saving women passengers an estimated Rs 6,790 crore collectively,' he highlighted. 'This is not just about free travel — it is about financial independence, educational access, and social mobility for women,' he said, adding that the scheme revitalised the state's transport corporation.
