Rangers set to come face to face with transfer target but not in the way they expected
Rangers set to come face to face with transfer target but not in the way they expected Russell Martin could come up against a familiar face next week but it's really not in the manner in which he'd have hoped Samuel Edozie of Southampton Russell Martin could face one of his old charges and a recent Rangers transfer target in a £40million Champions League play-off shoot-out. The Ibrox side are favourites to set up a tie against Club Brugge for a place in the lucrative league phase of UEFA's premier competition. And the Belgian side, leading 1-0 in the first leg of their tie against Salzburg, are closing in on a deal for Samuel Edozie - a player who played under the Light Blues boss at Southampton. Rangers tried to sign the English winger on loan last season when Philippe Clement was in charge, only for the move to collapse at the eleventh hour, and Martin was also linked with him after taking the Ibrox job. But it's last season when Rangers reportedly 'pulled the plug' at the eleventh hour and Martin, in charge at St Mary's at the time, pointed the finger at the Ibrox club. He said: 'What frustrated me was how late it fell through and it wasn't on our end. "It's a bit unfair to Sam really. It's a bit disappointing but it is what it is. Every club has their prerogative and their priorities in the transfer window. I was gutted for Sam because it was too late to then find another opportunity to go and play football.' Article continues below Sam Edozie in action for Southampton The former Manchester City kid, who has played in Belgium before after a loan spell at Anderlecht and registered four goals and six assists in 32 games in all competitions, could now be returning to the Jupiler Pro League. Club Brugge want him and Southampton are looking for a fee of around £8million. He was left out of Will Still's Saints squad for their Championship opener against Wrexham at the weekend. Night-and-day transformation before Dundee robbed by abysmal call
Last week I said I was fully braced for defeat. Instead, I saw the best performance from any Dundee team at Ibrox in my lifetime - a night-and-day transformation from the limp showing against time there was cohesion. The team moved as one, playing for set-pieces, restricting Rangers to scraps, and making every single one of the travelling support were mature, combative, disciplined and, on the balance of play, deserved all three came Don Robertson's penalty decision, which was nothing short of appalling. Djeidi Gassama was already tugging at Drey Wright's shorts before initiating contact, yet somehow the Dundee player was penalised. There was no challenge from Wright - nothing to warrant a foul. VAR should have told Robertson to review it at the very least. It was an abysmal, costly the match was historic - the first time in 24 years Dundee have left Ibrox without defeat. This instills belief in the team and if Dundee can reproduce the level of maturity and bite they showed on Saturday, Steven Pressley's tenure could end up shocking his still expecting more signings but the arrival of Yan Dhanda may prove to be the pick of the lot. A midfielder with the capabilities of creating chances and scoring goals are far and few in between and Dundee have landed one who is proven in the the kind of signing that gives the whole place a lift. Simon Murray was two goals away from the Golden Boot last season and will now be supplied by a playmaker with whom he already has a relationship on the pitch from their time at Ross County. It makes the deal all the have been starved of a formidable frontline partnership in the Premiership for nine years, since the days of Kane Hemmings and Greg Stewart. Perhaps Murray and Dhanda will feed that appetite in the games to come.
