1.5 tonnes of African catfish caught in Maeps lake fishing competition
Selangor Fisheries Department director Noraisyah Abu Bakar said the event organisers had prepared containers for participants to store the invasive species, particularly African catfish, for weighing and counting purposes.
"A total of 928 catfish were caught, with a combined weight of 1,100kg as of 1.30pm, when the competition ended.
"With approval from the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), the organisers continued the fishing activity under the committee's supervision, before being informed that an additional 400kg of African catfish had been landed," she said.
She said the department was informed that unofficial fishing activity would be allowed at the lake until today and is open to visitors of the ShowTech 2025 programme.
Mardi is also expected to implement further mitigation measures, as discussed with the department.
Earlier, it was reported that some 2,000kg of African catfish, estimated at 1,300 fish averaging 1.5kg each, were believed to have been released into Maeps Lake last Thursday.
Following public complaints, the Fisheries Department conducted a site visit last Friday and held an engagement session on the matter.
The catfish were released by the organisers in conjunction with the ShowTech 2025 programme organised by Mardi, without prior notification or advisory consultation with the State Fisheries Office.

Bayern ends Rwanda tourism sponsorship after criticism
MUNICH: Bayern Munich will end a sponsorship promoting tourism in Rwanda after controversy relating to the ongoing conflict in the region. Yesterday Bayern announced its partnership with the African nation, initially signed in 2023 and set to run until 2028, would shift to focus on a youth academy. "The new arrangement transitions away from a commercial sponsorship to a dedicated partnership focusing on football development in Rwanda through the expansion of the FC Bayern Youth Academy in Kigali," Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in a statement. The statement did not expressly mention the underlying reasons for the shift, but German media on Friday widely reported the decision was motivated by criticism as a result of the escalating conflict. In February, Bayern fans held up a banner at a home game saying the deal "betrayed the values" of the club. The Rwandan government has been accused of disregarding human rights and supporting rebels fighting against government forces in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the beginning of this year, violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo intensified. The Rwandan-backed M23 armed group and Rwandan troops seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, in January, and then Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, in February. The UN estimates thousands have died as a result of the attacks. The deal included 'Visit Rwanda' advertising at Bayern's 75,000-seat Allianz Arena home ground and replaced a controversial deal with Qatar, which was also criticised by the club's supporters. Following criticism of the previous deal, Bayern sent staff to Rwanda to assess the situation on the ground. The new contract runs until 2028.

Le Court makes history for Africa at women's Tour de France
GUERET: Mauritian Kim Le Court became the first African to win a stage on the women's Tour de France on Wednesday. It was a case of double celebration for the 29-year-old who took the fifth stage honours in a sprint to reclaim the leader's yellow jersey. Le Court edged Dutch duo Demi Vollering and Anna van der Breggen after a hilly 166km ride, the longest of the Tour, from Chasseneuil-du-Poitou Futuroscope to Gueret. Overnight leader Marianne Vos lost yellow to the AG Insurance-Soudal team leader after finishing eighth, 33 seconds adrift, on the day. Le Court, who had a brief spell already at the top of the general classification after stage two, now leads France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot by 18 seconds. "It's really been a dream start to the Tour. The stage win, the yellow jersey," said Le Court. "I wasn't even thinking about it when we started in Brittany. "As for what happens next, we'll see, since I don't know my limits in the mountains, this Tour being my first major stage race where my team has asked me to compete for the overall classification." Vollering, the Tour winner in 2023 and favourite for this edition, is third at 23sec after recovering from a heavy fall on Monday. Last year's winner, Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma, took fourth in the stage to sit well placed at 24sec off the overall lead. Cycling-Women's Tour leader Le Court becomes first African to win a stage
(Reuters) -Mauritian Kimberley Le Court Pienaar became the first African to win a stage at the Tour de France Femmes with a late push on Wednesday, reclaiming the yellow jersey during a marathon 165.8 km ride from Jaunay-Marigny to Gueret. Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal), 29, who led the general classification after stage two but was overtaken by Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike), won a breakneck downhill push to the finish, edging 2023 champion Demi Vollering. 'We came in with a clear plan, first to stay safe... it was difficult because it was flat and fast, a lot of big crashes... then try for the victory," Le Court said. The fifth stage, the longest in the Tour this year, went through a relatively flat terrain before three climbs in the final 35 km and saw several failed breakaway attempts as the peloton covered 46.5 km in the first hour despite multiple crashes. Green jersey holder Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) recovered from a crash to rejoin the peloton, but struggled to keep up after the first climb, ultimately finishing 58th. American Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly) abandoned the race after her third crash in three days.
