1.5 tonnes of African catfish caught in Maeps lake fishing competition
SERDANG: A total of 1.5 tonnes of African catfish were successfully caught during a fishing competition at Maeps Lake last Saturday. Selangor Fisheries Department director Noraisyah Abu Bakar said the event organisers had prepared containers for participants to store the invasive species, particularly African catfish, for weighing and counting purposes. "A total of 928 catfish were caught, with a combined weight of 1,100kg as of 1.30pm, when the competition ended. "With approval from the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), the organisers continued the fishing activity under the committee's supervision, before being informed that an additional 400kg of African catfish had been landed," she said. She said the department was informed that unofficial fishing activity would be allowed at the lake until today and is open to visitors of the ShowTech 2025 programme. Mardi is also expected to implement further mitigation measures, as discussed with the department. Earlier, it was reported that some 2,000kg of African catfish, estimated at 1,300 fish averaging 1.5kg each, were believed to have been released into Maeps Lake last Thursday. Following public complaints, the Fisheries Department conducted a site visit last Friday and held an engagement session on the matter. The catfish were released by the organisers in conjunction with the ShowTech 2025 programme organised by Mardi, without prior notification or advisory consultation with the State Fisheries Office.

ShowTech fair to spotlight fruits of Mardi's research
SERDANG: The five-day Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) Technology Showcase (ShowTech) 2025, to be held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) from May 29, will feature exhibitions showcasing the latest agricultural technologies and innovations. Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani described the exhibition as the best platform for the public and industry players to witness the results of Mardi's research over the past five decades. 'We will display 188 technologies across eight clusters. 'We will also bring together 148 entrepreneurs to sell their products,' he said at a media briefing for the event yesterday, reported Bernama. He added that this year's main highlight is the expansion of the exhibition area, which will include more interactive activities for visitors such as engaging in vegetable harvesting. 'Mardi is targeting an attendance of 500,000 visitors, including farmers, breeders, entrepreneurs, students and members of the public,' he said. He described ShowTech 2025 as a key platform for Mardi to introduce research findings that may not have been widely known. 'For example, Mardi has developed 58 padi varieties that are planted by over 95% of farmers in Malaysia, yet Mardi's name is not displayed. 'With ShowTech, we can inform the public about Mardi's contributions,' he said.

MARDI ShowTech 2025 to showcase agro tech and innovation
SERDANG: The five-day Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) Technology Showcase (ShowTech) 2025 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) from May 29 will feature exhibitions related to the latest agricultural technology and innovations. MARDI director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani described the exhibition as the best platform for the public and industry players to see for themselves the results of MARDI's research over the last five years. 'We will display 188 technologies, covering eight clusters, and we will also bring together 148 entrepreneurs to sell their products,' he said at a media briefing for the event here today. He added that the main difference this year is the expansion of the area for the display and interactive activities for visitors, including the experience of harvesting vegetables. 'MARDI is targeting the presence of 500,000 visitors, including farmers, breeders, entrepreneurs, students and the public,' he said. He described ShowTech 2025 as an important platform for MARDI to introduce research findings that were previously unknown to the public. 'For example, MARDI produces 58 paddy varieties planted by over 95 per cent of farmers in Malaysia, but MARDI's name is not displayed. So, with this ShowTech, we can tell the people about MARDI's contributions,' he said. ShowTech MARDI 2025 will be held in three main zones: Zone A, which includes Hall A and the surrounding area at MAEPS; Zone B, which features modern agriculture pathways and show plots of crops; and Zone C, which will showcase livestock farms, herb gardens, stingless bee farms and vegetable gardens. Visitors can also participate in side events like running and fishing competitions. MARDI will also offer various interactive programmes and activities in conjunction with the school holidays, including children's activities such as Earth Hero, Agro EduGenius as well as a kite-making workshop through the AgroCulture programme.
