Andrew Garfield's outspoken grief helped with loss of my mother
Dever revealed last year that her mother died after a breast cancer diagnosis, weeks before she filmed a scene for the post-apocalyptic HBO drama in which her character speaks about a brutal death.
The 28-year-old, also known for Netflix dramas Unbelievable and Apple Cider Vinegar as well as the comedy film Booksmart, told GQ Hype that she has repeatedly watched Spider-Man star Garfield's Stephen Colbert interview in order to learn how to cope.
She said: 'I would Google it and watch it often, because I always felt like… the worst thing in my life that could happen was losing my best friend.
'And I always thought that I wouldn't be able to go on.
'But then I'd look at Andrew and think, 'well, his life seems to be moving forwards'.'
She also spoke to the online magazine about filming The Last of Us days after her mother's funeral.
Dever, who attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (Rada), said: 'I had just experienced (my loss).
'Even though death is part of the human experience, we are not meant to be used to grief and watching your best friend die. So that was a crazy line to repeat over and over again because I had just seen her.
'She wasn't alive any more and I saw her body in the hospital. And that experience is so gut-wrenching. Nothing will ever be as bad as that.'
Her character Abby tells Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, she found her dead father's body shortly after he was shot, as she tries to get revenge against the protagonist.
The second series of The Last Of Us was released in April and stars English actress Bella Ramsey as Ellie, who is kept safe across the post-apocalyptic world by Joel.
Garfield, who was born in the US and later moved to the UK, began filming Netflix's biography Tick, Tick… Boom!, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, just after his mother Lynn died from pancreatic cancer in 2019.
He recalled in 2021 to Colbert that he hopes 'this grief stays with me because it's all of the unexpressed love that I didn't get to tell her, and I told her every day, she was the best of us', while promoting the film.

The Bombing of PanAm 103, which concluded earlier this week, told the story of the flight which exploded over Lockerbie on December 21, 1988. The programme was made by World Productions as part of a collaboration between the BBC and Netflix. A lot of filming has taken place in West Lothian and eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted the Civic Centre which was used as one of the main locations for filming. Emmy award winner, Merritt Wever (New Girl, Nurse Jackie), Patrick J. Adams (from Suits - the most watched series on Netflix in 2023) and Connor Swindells of Barbie fame were all located here for a short while to undertake filming. Despite scoring mixed reviews when it was released in cinemas earlier this year, it's been a box office hit - with a fourth movie in the works (Picture: Netflix) Next up, it's another new entry from India - this one a Hindi-language action drama which flopped at the box office but is finding new life on Netflix. Future of popular Netflix show revealed days after Holly Willoughby's big budget Celebrity Bear Hunt was axed
REALITY hit Love Is Blind invites singles to fall in love having never locked eyes, never mind lips. And Netflix is clearly smitten too, having ordered a THIRD run of the dating show before the second has even aired. 4 4 Married couple Emma and Matt Willis host the UK version of the global format which sees participants 'date' either side of a wall, with the aim of reaching a marriage proposal. Only once they have become engaged can the couples meet in person. The series then follows them as they decide if they really do want to tie the knot and prove love can be blind. It was a huge hit, with the show garnering 40.9million views in its first month. A source said: 'Everyone at Netflix was thrilled when the UK took to Love Is Blind as passionately as its global counterparts. 'The second series will air this summer but Netflix has begun work on series three as it's such a no-brainer.' streamer axed Holly Willoughby 's Celebrity Bear Hunt as its ratings did not justify the vast budget. Maybe they should have made the A-listers navigate the jungle in blindfolds . . . The Luther star has struggled with dyslexia throughout his career, so he uses tech to assist him. Now Idris has revealed that he and Luther director Stefan Schwartz have launched a new app to help actors learn scripts. Speaking at London's SXSW festival, he said: 'I find reading scripts very difficult, actually absorbing words. 'My wife knows about this, because whenever I'm texting her, I miss out half the sentences. 'The dyslexia grew over time and it became a bit of a hindrance for me. 'Stefan hasn't cast me yet,' he concluded. 'I'm a little salty about it.'
