Meta AI bot used a billion times monthly: Mark Zuckerberg

Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg touted the tech firm's generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant on Wednesday, telling shareholders it is used by a billion people each month across its platforms. Zuckerberg noted the milestone anew at Meta's annual gathering of shareholders and as the social media behemoth vies with Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and others to be a leader in Gen AI. It was not clear how much Meta AI use involved people seeking out the chatbot versus passive users of Meta AI, as it is built into features in its family of apps. Since Google debuted AI Overviews in search results a year ago, it has grown to more than 1.5 billion users, according to Google chief executive Sundar Pichai. 'That means Google Search is bringing Gen AI to more people than any other product in the world,' Pichai said. Google's AI Overviews are automatically provided summaries of search results that appear instead of the previous practice of simply showing pages of blue links to revelant websites. Pichai said last week that Google's dedicated Gemini AI app has more than 400 million monthly users. Tech rivals are rapidly releasing new AI products despite ongoing challenges with preventing misinformation and establishing clear business models, and little sense of how the tech will affect society. Meta unveiled its first standalone AI assistant app on April 29, giving users a direct path to its Gen AI models. 'A billion people are using Meta AI across our apps now, so we made a new standalone Meta AI app for you to check out,' Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a video posted on Instagram at the time. Zuckerberg said the app 'is designed to be your personal AI' and would be primarily accessed through voice conversations with the interactions personalized to the individual user.

Musk Hits Back After Bill Gates Claims DOGE

Elon Musk responded to Gates on Thursday, saying 'Gates is a huge liar' in response to Gates' assertion that 'DOGE will cost 2 million lives.' Bill Gates: "DOGE will cost 2 million lives"This man is a disgrace to humanity. — DogeDesigner (@cb_doge) May 8, 2025 If we know Musk, this is only the beginning of his response… Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has reignited his ongoing feud with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, accusing the world's richest man of 'killing the world's poorest children' through funding cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) overseen by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In an interview with the Financial Times published Thursday, Gates pointed to the slashing of grants to a hospital in Mozambique's Gaza Province, claiming the cuts have undermined efforts to prevent mothers from passing HIV to their newborns. 'The picture of the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children is not a pretty one,' Gates said, adding, 'I'd love for him to go in and meet the children that have now been infected with HIV because he cut that money.' Notice a messaging trend? Gates's comment targeting Musk is the latest salvo in the pair's longstanding beef. According to Musk, Gates once approached him to 'discuss philanthropy possibilities,' but Musk rebuffed the overture, citing Gates' $500 million short position on Tesla stock, which Gates confirmed he has not closed. 'Sorry, but I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change,' Musk texted Gates, per the Tesla CEO's account. Gates has also taken swipes at Musk's financial decisions after Tesla announced a $1.5 billion investment in Bitcoin. Speaking to Bloomberg, Gates said, 'Elon has tons of money and he's very sophisticated, so I don't worry that his Bitcoin will sort of randomly go up or down.' He cautioned retail investors, however, saying, 'If you have less money than Elon, you should probably watch out.' In 2022, Musk publicly mocked Gates on X, tweeting a meme that compared the Microsoft co-founder to an emoji depicting a pregnant man. Multi-Billion Dollar Investments... Can Microsoft Turn Artificial Intelligence into Profit?

After a challenging performance in 2024, all eyes are on Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) as the tech giant prepares to announce its fiscal Q3 earnings results later today. Josh Gilbert, Market Analyst at eToro, says investor attention is firmly fixed on the company's ability to turn its AI ambitions into meaningful revenue, along with its cloud growth and capital expenditure plans. Following strong results from Alphabet earlier this week, expectations are riding high. A key focus for the market will be Microsoft's capital expenditure (CapEx) and data center investment strategy. The company previously announced plans to invest up to USD $80 billion through the fiscal year, with a focus on AI development and cloud infrastructure. However, recent reports of Microsoft backing away from some new data center projects have raised questions about underlying demand. Commentary from Microsoft on how demand is holding up will be critical for shares. 'Microsoft is spending big, but it's what's needed to stay ahead,' Josh Gilbert, Market Analyst at eToro, commented. 'It's also worth remembering that the company has the balance sheet to support these investments, with its cash pile expected to hit USD $78 billion this quarter.' The company raised its dividend by 10% last year—marking 15 consecutive years of dividend growth. While CapEx may impact margins in the short term, Microsoft's ability to consistently generate high returns on capital and deliver robust revenue growth continues to underpin investor confidence. For the quarter, analysts expect revenue of USD $68.5 billion (up 11% year-over-year) and earnings of USD $3.21 per share. Microsoft has a strong track record of beating expectations, having missed earnings only once since 2016. However, the spotlight will be on Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform, which is forecast to grow 30% in constant currency. With commercial bookings strong and OpenAI likely contributing more this quarter, an upside surprise in Azure could propel the stock higher. Although the focus is on AI and cloud, the market will also be listening closely for any commentary regarding broader economic concerns, including the impact of global tariffs and a potential slowdown in enterprise demand. Insights into PC sales, Office product performance, and the gaming segment will also be key. Microsoft's Q3 earnings will serve as a major checkpoint for investors assessing the trajectory of the tech sector's AI transformation. For long-term investors, the company's bold investments may take time to materialize—but the foundations for future growth remain strong.
