Ukraine, US officially launch joint Reconstruction Investment Fund
Ukraine and the United States have officially launched a joint Reconstruction Investment Fund as part of their minerals agreement, Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced on May 23.
"The last step was a diplomatic note from the United States, which I personally received this morning from Julie S. Davis, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires. The Fund is officially launched," Svyrydenko wrote in a Facebook post.
The fund is a core component of the broader U.S.-Ukraine minerals agreement, signed on April 30.
Under the deal, the U.S. has special access to projects involving Ukraine's reserves of lithium, titanium, and other critical minerals. These resources are considered critical to global supply chains for the defense, aerospace, and green energy industries.
The fund will be jointly managed by Ukraine's Public-Private Partnerships Agency and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
While both sides have declined to disclose full operational details, officials have framed the project as a vehicle for long-term reconstruction and foreign investment.
The agreement has been months in the making, following a contentious negotiation process that at times strained bilateral ties. The final version removed controversial provisions that Ukrainian officials and experts feared could lead to exploitation of Ukraine's mineral wealth.
Two additional agreements to operationalize the fund were signed on May 13. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the ratified minerals agreement on May 12.
Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on April 27 that future U.S. military assistance may be counted as part of the fund's resources, although past aid will not be included.
Despite lacking explicit security guarantees from the U.S. — a key priority for Kyiv — the agreement signals a new phase in U.S.-Ukraine economic cooperation.

Reports of a large presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at locations in Cathedral City and Palm Springs circulated online Friday along with videos and images that appear to show the agency's officers and their vehicles. ICE had not responded to a request from The Desert Sun for information about the nature of the observed activity as of late Friday afternoon. Luz Gallegos, executive director of TODEC, an organization that advocates for the rights of immigrants, said volunteers had observed activity in the area. They said the operation appeared to have been targeted toward someone in particular and not a mass immigration sweep. But the organization is still waiting on additional information to confirm, she added. Rep. Raul Ruiz, a Democrat who represents parts of the Coachella Valley, said in a statement Friday afternoon that he has "formally requested more information from ICE regarding the raid by masked agents in unmarked vehicles in Cathedral City.' Gallegos said TODEC's 24/7 hotline started receiving calls about the situation at 7:45 a.m. TODEC's trained volunteers went out once they received a location and documented that there was an ICE operation behind Cardenas Markets on Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, she said. That shopping center was one of several locations where people reported seeing ICE agents. The other locations included two other shopping centers and strip malls along Ramon Road, including the centers located around the Ramon Road's intersection with Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs and its intersection with Landau Boulevard in Cathedral City. There were also reports on Facebook of ICE agents at a shopping area at Date Palm Drive and Highway 111. California's U.S. Sens. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla and two U.S. congressmembers from the state released a statement on Friday calling for an internal ICE investigation into a recent raid in San Diego that reportedly saw 20 ICE agents detain four employees of two restaurants in the city. The senators said the agents wore "military-style gear" and raided the restaurants during peak dining hours, detonating flash-bang grenades and instilling widespread fear and panic across the restaurants and the broader San Diego community. The lawmakers called the raid "disturbing" raid and said it reflects a pattern of 'theatrical' immigration enforcement stunts under the Trump Administration They urged ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility to investigate the agents' use of force, tactical decisions, compliance with legal protocols, and coordination with local officials, as well as the operation's impact on local communities and businesses. They also requested information on how the raid aligns with ICE's current immigration enforcement priorities and what guidance agents had received regarding enforcement in civilian or public-facing settings. Padilla released another statement Friday condemning what he called "a series of sudden immigration raids" that occurred Friday across Los Angeles. 'The ICE raids across Los Angeles today are a continuation of a disturbing pattern of extreme and cruel immigration enforcement operations across the country," the statement read. "These indiscriminate raids prove once again that the Trump administration cares about nothing but instilling harm and fear in our communities to drive immigrants into the shadows. It will not work. This fearmongering is not going to change the fact that immigrants are valued members of our communities who contribute to our society and economy, and my office will demand accountability for today's actions.' Costco Members Cautioned Against Using Their Membership Card—Don't Use It As a REAL ID
Costco is a popular big-box membership warehouse club, offering discounted prices on brand-name merchandise in bulk and non-bulk sizes. Costco is actually the third-largest retailer in the world, only behind Walmart and Amazon, and is a Fortune 500 company. "With hundreds of locations worldwide, Costco provides a wide selection of merchandise, plus the convenience of specialty departments and exclusive member services, all designed to make your shopping experience a pleasurable one," the company states on their website. To shop at Costco, members have to own a membership card. The Costco "Gold Star Membership" card includes two card and the ability to shop online and in warehouses. For those who want to up their game, the Costco "Executive Membership" package also includes an annual 2% reward and Costco services discounts. But, Costco customers are being told not to use their membership card for one specific thing. The TSA is showing their frustration with travelers who are not showing them a REAL ID to take a flight, and they don't want passengers to think that their Costco card counts as a proper REAL ID. "In a Facebook post shared on June 4, the TSA stated a Costco membership card is not, in any way, an acceptable form of identification to get on a plane. Yes, people are actually trying to use their Costco cards to get on aiplanes. 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person," the TSA stated in their post, "but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not." Beginning May 7, the majority of adult citizens taking a flight in the U.S. must show either a passport or upgraded identification card that meets federal REAL ID standards. Widely shared video claims to show Ukrainian soldiers shooting deserters. Here's what we know
In early June 2025, a video circulated online claiming to show Ukrainian soldiers shooting deserters near the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. The footage circulated amid reports of ongoing fighting near the city, a crucial transport hub in the Donetsk region. A posting (archived) of the video by the right-wing media personality Alex Jones had more than 4.6 million views at the time of this writing. (X user @RealAlexJones) Jones wrote: NATO backed, Ukrainian military caught by a Russian drones camera executing deserters. The Ukrainian soldiers shot their own deserters in the Pokrovsk sector As Ukraine slowly reaches the last stage before a collapse of combat capabilities. Exclusive footage from Russian scouts, who observed the AFU on the Shevchenko-Pokrovsk line while conducting aerial reconnaissance. Two Ukrainian "fighters" forced three fellow soldiers to their knees and shot them. The video shows that one of the unfortunate ones, hearing the first shots, rushed from the spot, but he did not manage to run far. Units of the 68th Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were stationed in this area. The video mainly circulated across (archived) X (archived) and on (archived) Facebook (archived). However, Snopes' investigation could not confirm exactly what the video, which was purportedly recorded near Pokrovsk, showed, nor the time or exact location it was recorded. A spokesperson for the General Directorate of Public Communications of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said via email that they could not verify the video in question but that it bore "all the hallmarks of falsification and manipulation of information." They added: "We emphasize that the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular the units performing combat missions in the Pokrovsk area, act exclusively within the framework of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and other norms governing the conduct of war." Ukraine's criminal code punishes military deserters with up to 12 years in prison during periods of martial law. The code does not include capital punishment for desertion. We reached out to the Russian military to ask if they could confirm that the video was authentic, when it was recorded, where, and what it showed, and await replies to our queries. One early version (archived) of the footage circulated on June 4, 2025. The Telegram channel that shared the early version of the footage was called "Work, brothers," a phrase used to show support for Russian law enforcement. Searches on the Telegram channel of the Russian Ministry of Defense located a video (archived) posted on April 16, 2025, with similar graphics to the one shared around June 4. Both videos appeared to be recorded using thermal cameras (indicated by the lighter shade of people in the video compared to the landscape) and featured a matching rotating compass wheel at the bottom of the video. The Russian MOD said on Telegram that the April 16 video showed drone operators destroying "ammunition and fuel depots, equipment and personnel" in Luhansk and Donetsk, including near Pokrovsk. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian strikes hit near Pokrovsk on this date. Claims also said the June 4 video was recorded by drone. According to online AI detectors Sightengine and Hive Moderation, it was unlikely the video was generated by AI. Desertion has been an ongoing problem for the Ukrainian Armed Forces since Russia's invasion in 2022.
