England spinner Bashir out of series with injury

BBC News6 hours ago
England spinner Shoaib Bashir has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against India with a broken finger on his left hand.Bashir, 21, was injured attempting a catch off his own bowling on day three of England's win in the third Test at Lord's.After sitting out much of the remainder of the Test, Bashir returned to bowl on the fifth day despite the issue and took the final wicket as England secured a dramatic 22-run victory.England say he will undergo surgery later this week. The injury forces England's hand for the remaining two Tests in terms of Bashir's place.Despite being repeatedly backed by captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, Bashir has come into question given his 10 wickets have cost 541 runs at an average of 54.10.Bashir has played in all of England's Tests since the fourth match of their tour of India in February 2024. That has come despite him not being the first-choice spinner at his county, Somerset, and having to go out on loan.Left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who has played 39 Tests, is preferred by Somerset and is still centrally contracted to England. He played alongside Bashir in Pakistan last autumn and went on the tour of New Zealand before Christmas.Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed was also on that tour. He and his 17-year-old brother Farhan, who is an off-spinner, played for England Lions against India A earlier this summer.Left-armer Liam Dawson, the leading spinner in the County Championship in recent years, was recalled to England's T20 side earlier this year.Another option would be to bring in batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who bowls left-arm spin, therefore strengthening the batting, although McCullum appeared to rule that out prior to Bashir's injury.

Insanity in the West Indies as Australia win one of the wildest Tests EVER played - and superstar Mitchell Starc sets a world record

Mitchell Starc has produced one of the all-time great bowling spells and Scott Boland taken a hat-trick as Australia bowled West Indies out for 27 to win the third Test. On a historic day in Jamaica, Australia's quicks ran riot to wrap up a 176-run victory and claim a 3-0 series sweep of the Frank Worrell Trophy. Chasing 204 for victory, West Indies' fourth innings lasted just 14.3 overs and only marginally eclipsed the lowest ever Test total of 26 by New Zealand in 1955. Boland became just the 10th Australian to claim a Test hat-trick, but it was Starc who ripped the heart out of the hosts with figures of 6-9. Starc took three wickets in the first over of West Indies' second innings and claimed five in 15 balls to at one stage have them 5-7. Playing in his 100th Test, Starc also became the fourth Australian to reach the 400-wicket milestone, joining greats Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Lyon. The demolition on Tuesday morning, Australian time, gives the Aussies a clean sweep of the series (skipper Pat Cummins is pictured with the Frank Worrell Trophy) Starc's 15-ball five-wicket haul marked the fastest by any bowler in Test history, beating Ernie Toshack from 1947, Stuart Broad's 2015 Trent Bridge effort and Scott Boland's MCG heroics of 2021. Each of those took 19 balls. Starc also became the second man to take three wickets in the opening over of an innings, striking when he had John Campbell caught behind first ball. He then trapped Kevlon Anderson lbw when the right hander left a ball that tailed in at him, before bowling Brandon King with the last ball of the over. Starc's assault carried into his third over, claiming his 400th Test scalp with another ball that swung into Mikyle Louis' back pad. Shai Hope followed two balls later, again trapped lbw. At that point Starc had figures of 5-2, with the only runs off him coming via the outside edge of Hope's bat and through the slips. Starc could have had a sixth victim, had Sam Konstas not grassed two chances at third slip to remove Alzarri Joseph either side of tea. But that opened the door for Boland's hat-trick. Called in for Nathan Lyon, the Victorian edged off Justin Greaves, had Shamar Joseph lbw and bowled Jomel Warrican in consecutive balls. The hat-trick marked Australia's first in a Test since Peter Siddle in the 2010-11 Ashes. In all, four of West Indies' top five were dismissed for ducks, with Louis the only one to trouble the scorers with a four when he edged Hazlewood to the boundary. Australia's record showing came after they appeared in danger of dropping the Test, when bowled out for 121 in their second innings.

West Indies bowled out for second lowest score in Test history as records tumble in Australia win

Mitchell Starc took a record five wickets in 15 balls as the West Indies were bowled out for just 27 on the third day of the third Test against Australia in Jamaica. The West Indies ' total was the second lowest in Test history, eclipsed only by New Zealand's 26 against England in 1955, and easily beat their own worst total of 47, also against England in 2004. At one point the hosts languished on nought for three and their innings included a record seven ducks. They lost the contest in Kingston by 176 runs. Starc made a stunning start, removing John Campbell, Kevlon Anderson, Brandon King, Mikyle Louis and Shai Hope in 15 balls, giving up just two runs in the process. His lbw against Louis also brought up his 400th Test wicket, making him only the fourth Australian to achieve the feat, in his 100th Test. The Windies teetered to 22 for six at tea but Australia continued to show no mercy after the break and Scott Boland reeled off a hat-trick to leave the home team staring at an embarrassing finish. Justin Greaves top-scored for the Windies on just 11, with leg byes (six) their second top scorer. Starc – who wrapped up the contest by bowling Jayden Seales – finished with six wickets for nine runs from 7.3 overs. Boland's figures were three for two. Prior to Starc's heroics, the previous best five-wicket haul was from his fellow Australian Ernie Toshack, who took five wickets in 19 balls against India in 1947.

Premier League club Brentford to sell stake at £400m valuation

The owner of Brentford Football Club has clinched a deal to sell a minority stake in the Premier League side to new investors at a valuation of roughly £400m. Sky News has learnt that an agreement that will involve current owner Matthew Benham offloading a chunk of his holding to Gary Lubner - the wealthy businessman who ran Autoglass-owner Belron - is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday. Matthew Vaughn, the Hollywood film-maker whose credits include Layer Cake and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is also expected to invest in Brentford as part of the deal, The Athletic reported last month. One insider suggested that the stake purchase would value the club at roughly £400m. Further details of the transaction were unclear on Monday night, although the insider speculated that it could ultimately see as much as 25% of the club changing hands. If confirmed, it would underline the continuing interest from wealthy investors in top-flight English clubs. FA Cup winners Crystal Palace have seen a minority stake being bought by Woody Johnson, the New York Jets-owner, in the last few weeks, with that deal hastened by the implications of former shareholder John Textor's simultaneous ownership of a stake in French club Lyon. Sky News revealed in February 2024 that Mr Benham had hired bankers at Rothschild to market a stake in Brentford. Under Mr Benham's stewardship, it has enjoyed one of the most successful transformations in English football, rising from the lower divisions to the top division in 2021. It has also moved from its long-standing Griffin Park home to a new stadium near Kew Bridge. This summer is proving to be one of transition, with manager Thomas Frank joining Tottenham Hotspur and striker Bryan Mbeumo the subject of persistent interest from Manchester United.
