Premier League club Brentford to sell stake at £400m valuation

Sky News14-07-2025
The owner of Brentford Football Club has clinched a deal to sell a minority stake in the Premier League side to new investors at a valuation of roughly £400m.
Sky News has learnt that an agreement that will involve current owner Matthew Benham offloading a chunk of his holding to Gary Lubner - the wealthy businessman who ran Autoglass-owner Belron - is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday.
Matthew Vaughn, the Hollywood film-maker whose credits include Layer Cake and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is also expected to invest in Brentford as part of the deal, The Athletic reported last month.
One insider suggested that the stake purchase would value the club at roughly £400m.
Further details of the transaction were unclear on Monday night, although the insider speculated that it could ultimately see as much as 25% of the club changing hands.
If confirmed, it would underline the continuing interest from wealthy investors in top-flight English clubs.
FA Cup winners Crystal Palace have seen a minority stake being bought by Woody Johnson, the New York Jets-owner, in the last few weeks, with that deal hastened by the implications of former shareholder John Textor's simultaneous ownership of a stake in French club Lyon.
Sky News revealed in February 2024 that Mr Benham had hired bankers at Rothschild to market a stake in Brentford.
Under Mr Benham's stewardship, it has enjoyed one of the most successful transformations in English football, rising from the lower divisions to the top division in 2021.
It has also moved from its long-standing Griffin Park home to a new stadium near Kew Bridge.
This summer is proving to be one of transition, with manager Thomas Frank joining Tottenham Hotspur and striker Bryan Mbeumo the subject of persistent interest from Manchester United.

'Another Nkunku' - Chelsea told they are making £61m transfer mistake

Chelsea have been urged to pull out of their deal for £61m transfer target Xavi Simons. The Blues are in advanced talks with RB Leipzig after agreeing personal terms with Netherlands attacker Simons. With Leipzig demanding around 70m euros for Simons, 22, Chelsea are currently working on player sales to raise funds for the deal. The Blues have already sold Joao Felix to Al Nassr for £43.7m and raised over £50m through the sale of Noni Madueke to Arsenal. Simons, who can play as a No. 10 or on the left wing, has made 76 appearances for Leipzig over the past two seasons and has 28 caps for Netherlands. Chelsea have high hopes for Simons but former Premier League forward Jan Age Fjørtoft has major reservations about the deal and says he could be 'another Nkunku'. Christopher Nkunku has been put up for sale this summer after another disappointing season at Stamford Bridge. Like Simons, the France international impressed at RB Leipzig before his £52m move to west London in 2023. Discussing Chelsea's pursuit of Simons, Fjørtoft told ESPN: 'You have to say to them, they're fair to their kind of plan. They have a defined kind of player they want to get in. 'But we now see they're being linked to Xavi Simons. I mean, that is Nkunku again, isn't it? 'There is something about their transfer strategy. I understand going for the big player and the biggest talents. 'But look at Joao Felix, when did he last have five or six games where he played well? He's one of those floaters who just float around the big clubs. 'Chelsea are truthful to their transfer strategy but I'm not sure they need to take the number of players they do. Go for the big ones but I don't understand why they have to go for so many. 'It's a bit unfair on young players because these days we need them to be good straightaway. Back in our days this would be a young kid who would take his time and prove to be good, now we want him to be the finished article. 'I'm not sure Xavi Simons will take the next step or do Chelsea better. You just get a feeling that want these kind of personalities because there's so many players like him at Chelsea. 'He's a brilliant player but is he able to take the next step up? He's been linked with Bayern Munich and different clubs but will he take the next step? And don't they have that type of player already? 'There's players that are now world-class who were on loan a few years ago so you never know about these players but there's something about Simons' temperament that I'm not 100% convinced of. 'Is he the guy who can go from being a good player and turn himself into a great player? You see that potential in some players but I'm not sure about Xavi Simons.' While Chelsea pursue Simons, they have also made a bid for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato. The Netherlands star is valued at around £43m by Ajax and Norwegian football hero Fjørtoft has suggested he could be a shrewd signing. More Trending 'They say he's the biggest talent in Europe in terms of defence,' Fjørtoft added. 'He's only 19 and he's already played over 100 games for Ajax. 'They say his weakness is the aerial duals because he's not that tall. But in Holland they say he's one of the biggest defensive talent they've had for many, many years so I get why Chelsea are interested. 'They say this defender is the next big thing so hopefully we see him in the Premier League.' Chelsea's biggest signings so far this summer have been Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap. Newcastle ‘favourites to be RELEGATED' after agreeing to Aaron Ramsdale transfer as Toon fans fear goalkeeper's ‘curse'

FANS fear Newcastle are the favourites to be relegated after they reportedly agreed a deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies have had a difficult transfer window after missing out on top target Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, with key man Alexander Isak announcing his desire to leave. 1 They also failed to sign their first-choice goalkeeper James Trafford, who returned to Manchester City from Burnley. So Newcastle have now agreed a deal to sign Ramsdale on loan which includes an option to buy, according to The Athletic. Ramsdale was No1 at Arsenal between 2021 and 2024 but fans fear for Newcastle because he has four relegations on his CV. His most recent came at Southampton last season, while he also finished in the Premier League bottom three with Sheffield United and Bournemouth. Another relegation came early in his career while on loan in League Two with Chesterfield. After his latest drop fans were quick to declare that 'the curse is real '. One said: 'Relegationdale.' Another added: 'Ramsdale curse is real I'm afraid.' Newcastle's capture of Ramsdale could reportedly lead Manchester United to launch a bid for Nick Pope. He is out of contract next summer so could prove an affordable option for the Red Devils, who will be without No1 Andre Onana for the start of the season due to injury.

Derek McInnes reveals long term admiration of Hearts star who 'gives a bit of everything'

The new Tynecastle boss sees a big role for the midfielder in his team this season Derek McInnes was a big fan of Cammy Devlin from afar – and has loved working with him at close quarters. ‌ The new Hearts manager sees a big role for the Australian midfielder in his team this season with Devlin having featured heavily in their pre-season and league cup and games. ‌ As part of McInnes' high press approach, Devlin's ball-winning ability in the middle of the park will be crucial as Hearts gear up for Aberdeen's Premiership visit of Aberdeen. ‌ And the Jambos gaffer is thrilled with what he has seen from the 27-year-old so far. McInnes said: 'I'm absolutely delighted with him, he's been first class - even from our first conversation with Cammy when we were on holiday. 'I've always been an admirer from a distance. And now that I'm his manager I'm really enjoying working with him. 'I think he gives you a bit of everything. 'I just want him to be a midfielder and he doesn't need to overthink his game too much. ‌ 'The game will come naturally to Cammy if he keeps getting about his work and he's been different class.' New recruit Oisin McEntee is similar to Devlin but also offers an aerial presence and McInnes is just as delighted with how the Irishman has settled into his new surroundings following his switch from Walsall. McEntee gave fans a taste of what is to come with an all-action display in the weekend's impressive 3-0 friendly win over Premier League newcomers Sunderland. ‌ McInnes added: 'He's a ball winner and keeps it simple, he's progressive - plays up and down the pitch. 'You've seen everything and why we wanted Oisin in the team against Sunderland. ‌ 'We've tried him in one or two different positions and sometimes in the pre-season games you don't always get a chance to go and snap into tackles and chance to turn the ball over and show that aggression. 'We've had most of the ball in that sense so Saturday was a good game. "There's seven, eight, nine games with opponents in our league that I can see Oisin really as effective as he was on Saturday.' ‌ McInnes is not short of options with his bloated squad having already added seven new faces with more set to follow. And he admits picking his starting 11 to face Aberdeen will be a challenge. He added: 'When everybody puts their best foot forward and there's a lot of people putting their hands up to play – that's great for a manager. 'Obviously I can only pick 11 guys.I think I could pick so many different 11s and I'd feel confident we could compete and get results. 'So I've got an idea about how I want to play and some of the players within that but we've still got quite a few days in training for the players and we've got a bounce game on Wednesday to try and top up the minutes for the others.'
