The Toyota Corolla Looks Even Better With White Wheels

Motor 106-05-2025
The Toyota GR Corolla gets all the attention—
and for good reason
. But hey, don't forget that the normal Corolla Hatchback still exists, and it's still a very good car. For 2025, Toyota is spicing up its base hatchback with a new FX Edition, which adds fancy paint, some extra bodywork, and a sweet wheel option.
As the name suggests, the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition draws inspiration from the Corolla FX16 hatchback produced between 1987 and 1988. Sporty touches include a black spoiler on the rear liftgate, new colors like the Inferno orange pictured here (or Ice Cap white and Blue Crush), heritage badging, and most importantly, 18-inch gloss white wheels that look
absolutely
ace.

The cabin boasts black Sport Touring seats with suede inserts and orange stitching that are
mildly
reminiscent of the FX16's chairs. That orange stitching also extends to the door panels, dash, steering wheel, and shifter boot. The Corolla hatch's standard 8.0-inch touchscreen and 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster both carry over here.
Unfortunately, there are no changes to the powertrain. The FX Edition uses the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in all versions of the standard
Corolla
hatch, sending 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. That engine achieves 33 miles per gallon combined.
Toyota won't say how much the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition might set you back, but the standard Corolla hatch SE starts at $24,875—so expect this one to be a few thousand dollars above that. The FX Edition hits dealerships this fall.

Death of billionaire who swallowed a bee sparks £3bn inheritance feud

The sudden death of an Indian billionaire has triggered a bitter succession battle at one of the country's largest car companies. Sunjay Kapur, 53, died from a heart attack on June 12 while playing polo in Surrey. He reportedly swallowed a bee. Kapur was the heir to Sona Comstar, a £2.7bn automotive component business founded by his father. The tycoon had been a fixture of Delhi's elite social circuit and was reportedly a friend of the Prince of Wales. He married three times – first to the designer Nandita Mahani and then the Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor before marrying the former model Priya Sachdev in 2017. Following his death in June, Sona Comstar has been at the centre of a succession battle, centred on a power struggle between the late businessman's mother, Rani Kapur, and the company's board of directors. Rani Kapur wrote to the board on July 24 alleging her son had died in 'highly suspicious and unexplained circumstances'. This came a month after the board unanimously appointed a new chairman on June 23. Ms Kapur accused company figures of exploiting the family's mourning to 'wrest control and usurp the family legacy', and said she had been 'forced to sign documents behind locked doors' while under emotional distress. The letter, also sent to India's market regulator, claimed she had lost access to her bank accounts and had not authorised any appointments to represent the Kapur family. Ms Kapur claimed that her husband – Mr Kapur's father, who died in 2015 – had made her the sole beneficiary of his estate and also a majority shareholder of the Sona Group. The company hit back in a regulatory filing. It said Ms Kapur had not been a shareholder since at least 2019, contradicting her claim to be majority owner of the Sona Group via her late husband's will. Sona Comstar also appears to have Mr Kapur's widow, Priya Sachdeva, on its side. The board moved to appoint Ms Sachdeva as a non-executive director, and approved the appointment at the company's annual meeting on July 25, despite Ms Kapur's objections and request to delay the meeting. Last week, Ms Sachdeva's office shared the Surrey coroner's report, confirming that her husband had died of natural causes. It specified that he died from ventricular hypertrophy and ischaemic heart disease, and closed its investigation. This came after Ms Kapur wrote to the UK authorities for an investigation into the circumstances, and refuted her suggestion that her son's death was suspicious. The dispute has also drawn in Mr Kapur's sister, Mandhira Kapur, who had been estranged from her brother for four years. In an Instagram post, she shared a photo with her brother and mother, vowing to 'protect what you would have wanted, and what Dad dreamed'. Ms Kapur claims there is a conspiracy at play with the aim of taking control of the business away from the founding Kapur family. 'It quite clearly reinforces what she's been saying, that her entire legacy is being usurped and no one is willing to look into the cause of death,' the senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, who represents Ms Kapur, told The Telegraph. 'It may all be very well interlinked and she has quite unequivocally said there is a conspiracy behind her son's death.' The company's 72 per cent of shares are held by the public and 28 per cent by its corporate promoter, Aureus Investments Private Limited. About 90 per cent of listed companies in India are family-controlled, yet only 63 per cent have a formal succession plan in place, according to a PwC survey. Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, was once locked in a public power struggle with his younger brother over the Reliance empire after their father, Dhirubhai Ambani, died in 2002 without a will. Their mother, Kokilaben, eventually brokered peace. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Ford to invest $5 billion in EV production. Here's what to know.

Ford is investing $5 billion to change the way it makes electric vehicles, a move the automaker says will allow it to manufacture models starting at $30,000 — far less than the current average price for an EV. The Dearborn, Michigan-based company on Monday said it will invest $2 billion to modernize its Louisville Assembly Plant and another $3 billion to build a new battery plant in Michigan, part of its push to produce more affordable EVs. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The company unveiled its new "universal EV platform" at a Monday event, with Ford CEO Jim Farley calling it "the most radical change on how we design and how we build vehicles at Ford since the Model T," which Ford introduced in 1908. According to Ford, the new assembly line will be structured more like an "assembly tree," with three different lines that converge into one, rather than a single assembly belt. "This way of building a vehicle, we're confident, is the first time anyone's done this anywhere in the world," said Doug Field, Ford's EV chief of digital and design, at Monday's event. The company said the design will lead to a quicker, smoother assembly process and improve ergonomics for employees through a less obstructive layout. "Ford's announcement is very ambitious, because it includes both a new production process and a new vehicle," said Patrick Anderson, founder of Michigan-based consulting firm Anderson Economic Group, in an email to CBS MoneyWatch. "If they can actually pull off a production line that has 40% fewer workstations and 20% fewer parts, it will be worthy of the 'Model T moment' claim. Ford's first EV from the new system The first product of this new production system will be a four-door midsize truck, which will debut in 2027. Farley said on Monday that the new vehicle will accommodate five people and feature a "frunk" — a front storage compartment — as well as a pickup truck bed. The vehicle will start at $30,000. By comparison, the average price for a new electric vehicle in July was about $56,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. Field touted the new vehicle's charging capabilities, referring to the truck as a "mobile power plant." "Outlets in the back can give you high power and let you plug in anything from tools to a refrigerator, and it can provide backup power for your home," he said. The midsize electric truck could be produced up to 40% faster than other vehicles at the Louisville Assembly Plant due to the new process, Ford said. In another effort to lower costs, the auto company is also reducing the number of components that go into each car. Vehicles produced on the "universal EV platform" will have 20% fewer parts than a traditional vehicle, Ford said. The company will also use smaller cobalt and nickel-free batteries that will allow it to make "cost gains," according to a video shared by Ford. Anderson said that Ford has its work cut out for them given that the new truck will need to be competitively priced and economical. According to the auto industry expert, the cost of charging EV trucks currently on the market is often much higher than the price at the pump for gas-powered versions. A report from the Anderson Economic Group shows pickup trucks drivers in New York, California and Michigan face "significantly higher costs" if they rely on an EV. A successfully lower-cost truck model, however, could spur a new chapter for the company in its manufacturing of EVs. "If Ford shows the industry it can build and sell a reliable compact EV truck for $30,000, it will sell a lot of them, and open the door to making sedans using the new production process," Anderson said. Rivian's Developing New Tech To Make Its EVs More Agile

The latest car news, reviews, and features. While the automaker won't discuss future product, there's a job listing outlining what's on the roadmap posted publicly online right now. Tipped off by the crew at RivianForums , Rivian has a job listing for a Sr. Mechanical Design & Release Engineer specifically for steering systems. The job listing isn't the interesting bit, as Rivian's a startup and hiring people to develop its future products at a rapid rate. But listed in the job description are two interesting features not existing in today's R1T or R1S: steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering. The former, which removes the mechanical connection between the steering system and the wheels, saves weight, saves money in production and materials, but adds development and engineering hurdles. The Tesla Cybertruck has steer-by-wire, among other things. Sr. Mechanical Design & Release Engineer, Steering job listing Rear-wheel steering would enable a Rivian to shrink its turning radius, which in turn would make the vehicle more agile in parking lots, around clover leaves, and take tighter turns off pavement as well. The feature, seen on the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and quite a few high-end luxury vehicles, would enable Rivian to make the larger R1T and R1S feel smaller than they are while driving. A Rivian spokesperson told The Drive , 'We cannot comment on any speculation about future protect.' Though, who's speculating? Rivian posted this in a public job posting for the world to see. The Rivian R1S and R1T were refreshed heavily, though they don't completely look like it, for 2025. The second-generation Quad arrived for 2026. It's unlikely rear-wheel steering or steer-by-wire will be integrated until the next refresh or heavy update, which likely will arrive around 2028. But it's quite possible steer-by-wire could be integrated into the upcoming $45,000 smaller R2, which arrives in 2026. Including steer-by-wire would lower the build cost, though increase development complexity. Either way, while unclear when these technologies will arrive in a Rivian, it's clear they are on the road map. If you're in the job market, have engineering chops and the record to prove it, Rivian might want to talk with you. Got a tip about future product via a job listing?
