Toyota's Coolest, Best-Looking New Car Is … a Corolla?

It's a dark horse pick, especially considering the brand's fan-favorite trucks and SUVs, but there's no denying the FX Edition's curb appeal. Every product is carefully selected by our editors. If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more As the world's number one best-selling car company since 2019, Toyota's list of vehicular offerings is understandably robust and outstanding. A lot of them even have that hard-to-define, inherent 'cool' factor, like the sporty GR86, rugged and capable Tacoma pickup and perennially popular RAV4. However, the brand's most surprisingly stunning recent release is a longtime model you'd probably never even consider putting on that list: a Corolla. But this isn't just any old Corolla; it's the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition. Despite its newness, the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition wasn't conjured out of thin air. It harkens to one of the brand's historical models: the beloved FX16 from the late 1980s. To be fair, besides its wide stance and back hatch, the inspiration is more spiritual than corporeal. Still, however intangible it might be, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the FX16's spirit in this modern reinterpretation. Perhaps it's as simple as being struck by its sporty white 18-inch wheels, vented rear wing and heritage badging. Maybe it's the trio of vibrant, retro colorways — Ice Cap, Inferno and Blue Crush Metallic. Whatever the case, I'm definitely smitten by this hot hatch. Of course, it's not just about its looks — it's also about what's hiding under the hood and inside the cabin. Based on the Corolla Hatchback SE, the FX Edition isn't exactly a speed racer, but it's no slouch, either. Along with its retro styling, improved aerodynamics and 'bold athleticism,' it's a capable performer on the road. Under the hood, it has a 2L, four-cylinder, 169-horsepower engine offering 33 MPG. That might not seem like much, but it's important to remember that the Corolla is still relatively small, only weighing a hair over 3,000 pounds. Don't forget the generous cargo space not offered by sedans. (Car camping, anyone?) It's also loaded with modern amenities and styling. Highlights include black Sport Touring seats with suede inserts and orange contrast stitching. That styling extends to its door panels, steering wheel and shift boot. It also boasts an 8-inch Audio Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice control. While none of these are particularly special, they're still lovely, even if they're expected. Don't forget the generous cargo space not offered by sedans. (Car camping, anyone?) While pricing and availability of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition have yet to be revealed, the brand has announced that only 1,600 units will be available. Learn More

Toyota Unveils Vintage-Inspired Corolla Hatchback FX

Inspired by the 1980s pocket rocket, the Corolla Hatchback FX brings some flair to the automaker's sporty hatchback. Back in the late 1980s, Toyota dropped the Toyota Corolla FX16: a small hatchback powered by the legendary 4A-GE engine with a 7500 rpm redline and a five-speed transmission. It wasn't quick by any means, only making 108 hp, but its stature and 2,440 lb curb weight made it a blast in corners. The 1980s are gone, but thankfully, the FX16 is now back in the form of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition. 0:07 / 0:09 Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Watch More 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX — Source: Toyota The FX sports some sporty touches Based on the Corolla Hatchback SE, the FX embodies its rowdy older sibling with a black vented rear wing, 18-inch gloss white-finished alloy wheels with black lug nuts, and a vintage-looking 'Corolla Special Edition' badge on the hatch. To match the special edition flair, the Corolla Hatchback FX will be available in Inferno, Ice Cap, and Blue Crush Metallic. Under the hood is the regular 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine making 169 horsepower, 151 lb-ft. of torque, and a combined 33 MPG rating. The cabin doesn't quite relay the same level of fun colors, but it does feature black Sport Touring Seats with suede inserts and orange stitching that continues on the door panels, steering wheel, and shifter boot. A 7-inch digital gauge cluster is standard, as is a wireless charger, and an 8-inch infotainment screen. Your standard smartphone connectivity makes a welcome return, with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi Connect trial/subscription that offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices. 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Vintage touches don't mean a lack of safety Toyota's latest Safety Sense 3.0 suite gives the Corolla modern amenities without compromising its vintage looks, including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. Warranty-wise, the Corolla Hatchback FX comes with the standard 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty and a 60-month warranty that covers the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. ToyotaCare comes included at no additional cost, and covers factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years with unlimited mileage. Everyone likes it when a manufacturer shows respect towards their heritage with a special, limited edition model like the Corolla FX, and while the interior doesn't quite do the exterior justice, this is still a welcome sight that is sure to sell out quick. You Can Get Glossy White Wheels on the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatch

Whenever I get upset with the state of the world, I like to remind myself that whatever force has guided us here obviously has a sense of humor. What else could explain Toyota's transformation from the big kahuna of beige into one of the most reliable sources of fun and interesting new cars for several years running? And they're at it again, folks. Before you get too excited, no—this isn't a GR Corolla with a business-casual makeover. Meet the 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX Edition. It's taking the place of the Nightshade Edition this year, and while it won't do anything for your Corolla's performance, it does make for one undeniably eye-catching package. The 'Inferno' finish shown here is pretty sweet on its own, but the contrasting wheels are what we're most interested in. The FX's 18-inch rims are finished in gloss white and fitted with black lug nuts, matching the FX's blacked-out badges and vented wing. White wheels aren't unheard of, of course, but they're certainly exceptions in a world of grey, silver, and black finishes. Off the top of our heads, we can name a couple from Ford (Mach-E Rally, Bronco Heritage Editions), while both Land Rover and Porsche have introduced white finishes on some styles. Needless to say, it's not exactly a mainstream offering, and at least this Corolla hatch figures to be one of the cheaper vehicles to offer the privilege. Toyota Inside, the FX Edition gets the upgraded Sport Touring seat package (the same suede-trimmed thrones available in the spicier GR) and orange contrast details and stitching throughout. And if orange isn't your thing, Toyota will offer the FX Edition in two less tropical colors dubbed 'Ice Cap' (previously offered on the GR Corolla) and 'Blue Crush Metallic'—a white and deep blue, respectively. I know what you're thinking: White on white? In this economy? Better invest in some cleaning products. [Ed. note: Could be worse—you could slap these on the brake dust factory that is the GR Corolla. Ask me how I know.] Toyota Speaking of which, Toyota has not yet named a price for the FX Edition, but it has set a limit on how many of them will come stateside: 1,600. And that's not 1,600 per color, mind you, just 1,600, period . Pricing will be revealed closer to the car's on-sale date later this fall. Got tips? The Toyota Corolla Looks Even Better With White Wheels

The Toyota GR Corolla gets all the attention— and for good reason . But hey, don't forget that the normal Corolla Hatchback still exists, and it's still a very good car. For 2025, Toyota is spicing up its base hatchback with a new FX Edition, which adds fancy paint, some extra bodywork, and a sweet wheel option. As the name suggests, the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition draws inspiration from the Corolla FX16 hatchback produced between 1987 and 1988. Sporty touches include a black spoiler on the rear liftgate, new colors like the Inferno orange pictured here (or Ice Cap white and Blue Crush), heritage badging, and most importantly, 18-inch gloss white wheels that look absolutely ace. Photo by: Toyota Photo by: Toyota Photo by: Toyota The cabin boasts black Sport Touring seats with suede inserts and orange stitching that are mildly reminiscent of the FX16's chairs. That orange stitching also extends to the door panels, dash, steering wheel, and shifter boot. The Corolla hatch's standard 8.0-inch touchscreen and 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster both carry over here. Unfortunately, there are no changes to the powertrain. The FX Edition uses the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in all versions of the standard Corolla hatch, sending 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. That engine achieves 33 miles per gallon combined. Toyota won't say how much the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition might set you back, but the standard Corolla hatch SE starts at $24,875—so expect this one to be a few thousand dollars above that. The FX Edition hits dealerships this fall. 9 Source: Toyota The Latest Toyota Special Editions 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade: Better Looks, Same Great Car The 2026 Toyota GR86 Yuzu Edition Has Scion Vibes Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use .
