Zac Purton uncertain how Bundle Award will handle distance test in Queen Mother Memorial Cup
An impressive winner of three Australian races pre-import and two in Hong Kong, Bundle Award rises to 2,400m for the first time on the back of a solid seventh in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) and a last-start fourth over 1,800m.
Purton, who has won the Queen Mother Memorial on Exultant (2018) and Dominant (2013), is uncertain how the son of Shamus Award will handle the distance test.
'It's an interesting one,' said the star Australian rider.

'He didn't appear to finish it off too strong in the Derby, but it was always going to be hard from where he was to get into the race. They went so slow and sprinted home, so sometimes that's hard to get a proper handle on a performance.
'He still ran home in quick time but every horse ran home in quick time. I think the question mark is there at the distance but it's a small field, he relaxes and he'll give himself a chance. We've just got to find out if he can run it.'
After finishing two lengths behind shock winner Cap Ferrat in the Derby, Bundle Award was ridden by Purton for the first time when running on from near last to finish fourth behind Californiatotality in the Class Two Hong Kong Lions Cup (1,800m).
'It was good. He got the start wrong, the race wasn't run to suit and he kept finding the line,' Purton said.
'He sprinted quick from the 400m to the 200m and then seemed to flatten out the last bit, so maybe he does want further. We'll find out on Sunday.'
Bundle Award can deliver Size his first victory in the HK$4.2 million feature since his breakthrough success with Dr Well in 2006.
He jumps from barrier two in the field of six. Tony Cruz boasts half of the field in his bid for a sixth victory in the race, with last year's winner La City Blanche, Five G Patch and Winning Dragon his representatives.
Mark Newnham's Bravehearts, a Group One winner over 2,400m in Argentina pre-import, and Derby runner Noisy Boy round out the field.
Armed with a strong book of 10 rides on the 11-race card, Purton will also pilot Size's exciting galloper Crossborderpegasus for the first time in the Class Three Gascoigne Handicap (1,200m).
The three-year-old won his first two starts before a close second to Aeris Nova when wide throughout last start.
'I did a lot of work on him before he raced, but I was obviously out injured so Hugh [Bowman] was able to get on him and he's done a really good job,' Purton said.
'He's got that tendency to hang in and he's drawn out wide [in barrier 10]. It's not going to be an easy task for him, but he's a quality horse that looks as if he's still on the way up. Hopefully we can get in the right spot and give him his chance.'
Impressive win, Mickley! 👌

Mickley in the Class Two Hillwood Handicap (1,600m) is another of Purton's rides for Size, with the former British galloper stepping out for the first time since his eighth in the Derby.
'He showed a lot early then seemed to lose his way a little bit,' Purton said of Mickley, who won brilliantly over 1,600m at his second start in the city last December.
'He's had a bit of time between runs. I think it's just a matter of finding out what works for him again.'
The All Out, Super Eagle, Better And Better, Shamus Storm, Amazing Run, Packing Turbine and The Boom Box are Purton's other rides on Sunday.

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead
Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead Kaden Groves celebrates winning stage 20 of the Tour de France. Photo: Reuters Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns. Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris. The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier. This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins. "They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out. "I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow." Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps. So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test
British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test British and Irish Lions' Sione Tuipulotu celebrates scoring a try for the tourists. Photo: Reuters A relentless British and Irish Lions were ferocious in attack and solid in defence to edge a dogged Australia and win a bruising first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday. The tourists repeatedly laid siege to the Wallabies' line for a 17-5 lead at the break before soaking up second-half pressure to bank the win with both sides scoring three tries. A late Australia try meant the scoreline flattered a poor Wallabies side, with the Lions never looking in trouble after opening up a 24-5 lead shortly after half-time. Played in front of 52,229 fans at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium, many wearing the Red of the Lions, the tourists proved too strong for a brave, but outgunned Australian outfit. With Scottish fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings in the backs and outstanding loose forwards Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne dominating up front, the Lions showed why they went into the Test as firm favourites. But despite being behind for all of the match, the Wallabies didn't roll over, and fears of a huge defeat never materialised. The Lions now head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for next Saturday's second Test 1-0 up in the three-match series. (AFP)

Hong Kong defender targets historic win to break 40-year drought against China
Leon Jones has urged Hong Kong to finish their East Asian Championship campaign in historic style when they meet China on Tuesday. Hong Kong were rigid and determined in a 2-0 loss to hosts South Korea on Friday, three days after failing to do themselves justice in a heavy 6-1 defeat by Japan. Centre-back Jones credited a change of structure for 'making us more competitive' and said a first meaningful meeting with the Chinese since 2022 was 'a chance, against good opposition, to show what we can do'. Hong Kong beat China 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on New Year's Day last year, but May 19 marked the 40th anniversary of the city team's only competitive success against their mainland rivals: a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Beijing. 'A lot of people feel strongly about the Hong Kong team, and China is a big derby game; a big rivalry,' Jones said.
