Mamata unveils twin gates to honour Vidyasagar's legacy in Birsingha

cultural tourism
and pilgrimage destination in the state.
The initial phase involved the restoration of Birsingha Bhagabati Vidyalaya and Vidyasagar Smriti Mandir. "Mud buildings that were 150 years old were strengthened, conserved and restored. A day rest and interpretation centre was built using a mix of existing traditional techniques with modern-day knowledge. A landscape resembling a tapoban in a gurukul was added to tie the elements together and create the necessary ambience of cultural tourism," said conservation architect Anjan Mitra.
The state govt's information and cultural affairs department funded the project which received the 2023-24 HUDCO design award first prize in conservation.
The subsequent phase focuses on developing twin gates as tourist landmarks, directing visitors to Vidyasagar Smriti Mandir, a knowledge centre highlighting Vidyasagar's legacy.

Artist Amar Sarkar created the Barnaparichay Gate on Chandrakona Road as a public art installation. It represents an enlarged version of Barnaparichay, the Bengali primer authored by the social reformer in 1855. He also designed a village art wall in the old vernacular style. "What we tried to do here is create an ambience of a 19th-century Bengal village through the art wall that camouflages the disparate entities like shops, toilets and bus stands without displacing them. The art wall is designed so that everyone present becomes a harmonious part of the overall landscape. A platform or stage has also been created where local performances can be held," added Mitra, the project executor.
Artist Purnendu De designed the Birsingha Gate at the entrance to Birsingha village proper. Inspired by commonly seen forms in rural Bengal villages, this gate, replete with carefully crafted terracotta panels, documents the life and teachings of Vidyasagar. A bust of Vidyasagar has also been sculpted and placed within this gate. The project was executed by the PWD Midnapore division.

Bus shortage: Mayhem at Kilambakkam
Chennai: Yet another long weekend brought with it chaos at Kilambakkam bus terminus, short-supply of local and long-distance buses and bus fare spike by three to four times. Outbound travellers had to jostle for seats whenever a bus entered the Kilambakkam terminus since Thursday afternoon. Young and old, besides children, were screaming for assistance in the mayhem. Transport commissionerate had stated that 1,160 special buses were operated on mofussil routes on Thursday, including 400 hired private buses (Payanam buses), about 100 MTC buses, and 50 SETC buses, apart from the regular 2,092 services. However, passengers complained they were still inadequate compared to the demand. "MTC should increase connectivity to Kilambakkam at least on long holidays until KCBT gets metro rail connectivity. For suburban passengers, reaching KCBT is not manageable now," said Rajasekar, a passenger. Chengalpet district revenue officer Paul Rajkumar, who oversees KCBT operations, said passengers started thronging KCBT from Thursday afternoon as many private firm employees were leaving for their hometowns after the first work shift ended. "Across the state, 4,000 buses made 6,600 trips transporting 2.52 lakh passengers. Some companies do violate the price cap, and the transport department should initiate action," he said. He also mentioned that the special squads of the department should check the fares at the origin station instead of stopping the bus midway at multiple points in the name of checking, delaying the travel further. T'puram: The Thiruvananthapuram division recorded its highest-ever gross earnings of Rs 2,323cr this year and the highest-ever passenger earnings of Rs 1,705cr, said divisional railway manager Divyakant Chandrakat. Unfurling the national flag, he mentioned that special train operations saw a remarkable increase, with 1,703 services in 2024-25, a 94% rise over the previous year. This year, 48 special train services were introduced before Onam to manage festive travel demand. The year 2024-25 marked a period of exceptional performance for the division, achieving its highest-ever gross earnings of Rs 2,323cr, passenger earnings of Rs 1,705.71cr and ticket-checking revenue of Rs 41cr. This momentum continued in the current year, with close to one lakh passengers being carried daily. Passenger earnings grew by 4.84% to Rs 570cr, gross revenue touched Rs 742cr, and freight contributed Rs 116.25cr from 1,104 metric tonnes transported. The 'One Station One Product' scheme completed 45 phases, supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs.
