Bus shortage: Mayhem at Kilambakkam
Outbound travellers had to jostle for seats whenever a bus entered the Kilambakkam terminus since Thursday afternoon.
Young and old, besides children, were screaming for assistance in the mayhem.
Transport commissionerate had stated that 1,160 special buses were operated on mofussil routes on Thursday, including 400 hired private buses (Payanam buses), about 100 MTC buses, and 50 SETC buses, apart from the regular 2,092 services. However, passengers complained they were still inadequate compared to the demand.

Manikandan K, a private firm employee from Kallakurichi, said passengers suffered due to announcement from the transport corporation that additional buses would be operated.
"There were not many unreserved buses. And to destinations such as Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram, MTC buses were operated," he said. Impatient passengers had to run behind the arriving buses, not knowing if they would be operated on their route, he said.
Some families decided to take a nap at the bus terminus, unable to find buses.
Reaching the KCBT itself was a Himalayan task for many, as slow-moving traffic and lack of MTC buses to Kilambakkam added to the woes.

It took three hours to reach Kilambakkam from Koyambedu, but only reserved buses were stationed in the KCBT, said another passenger. "MTC should increase connectivity to Kilambakkam at least on long holidays until KCBT gets metro rail connectivity. For suburban passengers, reaching KCBT is not manageable now," said Rajasekar, a passenger.
Chengalpet district revenue officer Paul Rajkumar, who oversees KCBT operations, said passengers started thronging KCBT from Thursday afternoon as many private firm employees were leaving for their hometowns after the first work shift ended.
"The buses we reserved for the evening were operated to manage the afternoon rush. The additional buses were operated as and when the crowd demanded buses for a specific route.
Till 4am on Friday, 2.5 lakh passengers travelled from KCBT," he added. Buses to Kumbakonam, Trichy, Tiruvannamalai, and Villupuram were in high demand, he said.
Meanwhile, a few omni bus operators started fleecing desperate passengers by tripling the ticket fares.
From Chennai to Erode, a ticket that usually costs around 800 was sold for 2,800 online, even though the omnibus associations claim to have capped the price at 2,250.
A Anbalagan, president of the All Omni Bus Owners Association, said 1,800 private buses were operated from Chennai to several destinations on Thursday. "Across the state, 4,000 buses made 6,600 trips transporting 2.52 lakh passengers. Some companies do violate the price cap, and the transport department should initiate action," he said. He also mentioned that the special squads of the department should check the fares at the origin station instead of stopping the bus midway at multiple points in the name of checking, delaying the travel further.

Long I-Day weekend boosts local tourism
1 2 Ranchi: The I-Day weekend turned Ranchi and its neighbouring destinations into a buzzing tourist circuit, as thousands of visitors poured into waterfalls, valleys, lakes, and resorts. With three back-to-back holidays, families, students, and travel enthusiasts grabbed the window to escape into nature. From Jonha, Dassam, and Hundru Falls to Patratu Valley and the misty plateau of Netarhat, popular sites were choked with vehicles. Roadside tea stalls and local eateries did brisk business, while dhabas on the Ranchi-Ramgarh stretch overflowed with customers. "The monsoon makes the waterfalls come alive. The spray of water at Dassam was so strong, it felt like a natural shower. I was not tired of clicking selfies," said Priyanka Gupta, a visitor from Ramgarh. At Netarhat, also known as the 'Queen of Chotanagpur', tourists were disappointed at missing the famous sunrise and sunset views due to cloudy skies. But they quickly switched plans. "Since the skies are foggy, people are heading in large numbers to Jodh Falls, which has become the real crowd-puller this weekend," said Abdul Wahab, manager of the Jharkhand Tourism-run Prabhat Vihar Resort. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "All our 24 rooms were sold out on Friday and Saturday, and 22 were pre-booked for Sunday. In three days, our earnings will easily cross Rs 10 lakh, inclusive of all taxes." The boom was equally visible at Patratu Lake Resort, where boating and the view of the valley view kept tourists hooked. With 40 rooms booked for all three days, the resort saw a surge in revenue. "If you include the restaurant, entry tickets, and parking, our daily turnover has exceeded Rs lakh," said Jharkhand Tourism-run Lake Resort's manager, Arun Kumar. However, the surge brought challenges too. To ensure safety, police tightened vigilance on the Patratu route. "We carried out helmet checks, stopped youngsters performing stunts, and kept a watch after recent reports of chain snatching. Our priority was to ensure tourists enjoy the valley without any fear," said Abhay Singh, officer-in-charge of Pithoria police station. Despite the checks, the mood stayed festive. Families spread picnic sheets near Hundru, groups trekked around Jonha's trails, and couples enjoyed long drives through the valley's green curves. For many, the three-day break is less about the calendar and more about rediscovering Ranchi's monsoon magic. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). From Wimbledon to F1: Surprises for staff bringing their A-game
Corporate rewards and recognition (R&R) programmes are no longer about gift vouchers, gold coins, or a pat on the back. From Wimbledon to Formula 1 and even cricket on ice in Switzerland, companies are increasingly sending top performers on all-expense-paid experiential trips. Companies across industries from pharmaceuticals and information technology (IT) to services sectors and banking, financial service and insurance (BFSI) are increasingly sending employees on domestic and international trips, according to travel companies. Curated experiences 'What started as a domestic outing, and then exotic international destinations, has now evolved to truly experiential events,' said SD Nandakumar, president and country head – holidays and corporate tours, at SOTC Travel. Corporates are sponsoring fully paid luxury tours to sporting events like F1 races (Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Bahrain, and Italy's Monza circuits), Grand Slam tennis events such as Wimbledon and the Australian Open, European club football, and cricket, Nandakumar said. Amid rising corporate demand, Thomas Cook is organising sports-led experiential trips, such as a buy-out of Auckland's Eden Park for a private corporate cricket match, complete with Indian chefs at live cooking counters, professional commentators, and VIP interactions with celebrity players. The company grabbed 'uber premium grandstand seating' at the British Silverstone F1 Grand Prix, and held private rugby matches in New Zealand, ice-hockey showdowns in Prague, and a cricket match on ice in Switzerland. Prateek Dubey, global CHRO at Mankind Pharma, said international trips and global event participation are among the firm's recognition initiatives for employees this year. Stree Shakthi' scheme sees subdued response
Visakhapatnam: Although the free bus travel (Stree Shakthi) scheme launched on Friday has sparked enthusiasm among women, buses were less crowded than expected on Saturday. When TOI visited the RTC complexes at Dwaraka Nagar and Maddilapalem in Visakhapatnam, there was about a 20% increase in female passengers compared to a typical day. However, the turnout fell short of the high demand anticipated for a free service. Officials said that the subdued response might be due to the three-day holiday period, which included Independence Day, Krishn Ashtami and Sunday. RTC authorities anticipate that there will be a surge starting from Monday, Aug 18. For instance, the Parvathipuram-Visakhapatnam bus, which earned about Rs 9,000 in ticket fares on Satuday, reported about Rs 3,400 worth of free tickets issued to women passengers on Saturday. Since zero-fare tickets are recorded for govt reimbursement, this indicates that women availing the free service made up about 40% of the bus occupancy. Similarly, a bus traveling to Narsipatnam, roughly 75 kilometers away, still had some vacant seats. Speaking to ToI, A Ramannamma, a private employee who previously used a monthly bus pass costing Rs 460 for travel between Bullayya College and Arilova in Visakhapatnam, said the free bus travel scheme would eliminate her need for a monthly pass. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Writing in English Doesn't Have to Feel Hard Grammarly Learn More Undo "If someone like me can save Rs 500 a month on city travel, long-distance commuters stand to save Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 monthly," she said. R Janaki, a woman passenger heading to Srikakulam from Dwaraka bus station, said that she will save Rs 125 each way on journey. "It's a great initiative that empowers women, allowing us to travel anywhere in the state free of charge," said Janaki. However, limited bus service availability beyond the districts remains a challenge for long-distance women travellers wishing to use the scheme. While several buses from Visakhapatnam to destinations in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Narsipatnam, are included in the free travel category, options to travel to nearby cities like Kakinada and Rajahmundry, about 200 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, are limited. This is mainly because RTC operates mostly ultra-deluxe, AC, Indra, and non-stop services on these routes, which are currently excluded from the scheme. Furthermore, some women faced difficulties accessing the free service due to the lack of required identity cards. While some conductors allowed travel with photocopies or showing Aadhaar cards on mobile phones, others insisted passengers purchase tickets instead of traveling for free.
