Stree Shakthi' scheme sees subdued response

Stree Shakthi' scheme sees subdued response

Time of India19 hours ago
Visakhapatnam: Although the free bus travel (Stree Shakthi) scheme launched on Friday has sparked enthusiasm among women, buses were less crowded than expected on Saturday. When TOI visited the RTC complexes at Dwaraka Nagar and Maddilapalem in Visakhapatnam, there was about a 20% increase in female passengers compared to a typical day.
However, the turnout fell short of the high demand anticipated for a free service. Officials said that the subdued response might be due to the three-day holiday period, which included Independence Day, Krishn Ashtami and Sunday. RTC authorities anticipate that there will be a surge starting from Monday, Aug 18.
For instance, the Parvathipuram-Visakhapatnam bus, which earned about Rs 9,000 in ticket fares on Satuday, reported about Rs 3,400 worth of free tickets issued to women passengers on Saturday.
Since zero-fare tickets are recorded for govt reimbursement, this indicates that women availing the free service made up about 40% of the bus occupancy. Similarly, a bus traveling to Narsipatnam, roughly 75 kilometers away, still had some vacant seats.
Speaking to ToI, A Ramannamma, a private employee who previously used a monthly bus pass costing Rs 460 for travel between Bullayya College and Arilova in Visakhapatnam, said the free bus travel scheme would eliminate her need for a monthly pass.

"If someone like me can save Rs 500 a month on city travel, long-distance commuters stand to save Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 monthly," she said.
R Janaki, a woman passenger heading to Srikakulam from Dwaraka bus station, said that she will save Rs 125 each way on journey. "It's a great initiative that empowers women, allowing us to travel anywhere in the state free of charge," said Janaki.
However, limited bus service availability beyond the districts remains a challenge for long-distance women travellers wishing to use the scheme.
While several buses from Visakhapatnam to destinations in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Narsipatnam, are included in the free travel category, options to travel to nearby cities like Kakinada and Rajahmundry, about 200 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, are limited.
This is mainly because RTC operates mostly ultra-deluxe, AC, Indra, and non-stop services on these routes, which are currently excluded from the scheme.
Furthermore, some women faced difficulties accessing the free service due to the lack of required identity cards. While some conductors allowed travel with photocopies or showing Aadhaar cards on mobile phones, others insisted passengers purchase tickets instead of traveling for free.

Govt implements Rs 3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles

'Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas,' it added. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added. Arunachal's Kabak Yano summits Mt Elbrus, guv congratulates her

1 2 3 4 Itanagar: Mountaineer Kabak Yano from Arunachal Pradesh has summited Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia and Europe, standing 18,510 feet above sea level. Yano successfully reached the summit on Saturday at 5.20am (Russian time). Mount Elbrus, located in the Caucasus Mountains of southwestern Russia near the Georgian border, is a dormant stratovolcano. It is the highest peak in Europe and also the highest volcano in Eurasia. Elbrus ranks among the 10 most prominent peaks in the world. Climbing Elbrus is considered one of the significant milestones of the Seven Summits challenge, which involves scaling the tallest mountain on each continent. Governor KT Parnaik has congratulated Yano for her achievement. Parnaik, who had earlier flagged off Yano for her Seven Summits challenge on July 28, expressed pride in her determination that she will complete the mission successfully. On Aug 5, Yano climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895 metre) in Tanzania. "Her extraordinary feat reflects the true 'Spirit of Arunachal' and will serve as a powerful source of inspiration, particularly for young girls, to embrace challenges with courage and resilience," Parnaik said. Expecting passenger rush after extended I-Day weekend, services to start at 5 am tomorrow on Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line

Anticipating a significant increase in passenger activity following the extended Independence Day weekend, Bengaluru Metro will start services on the newly inaugurated Yellow Line at 5 am on Monday. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Sunday announced that the first trains will depart from both the terminal stations – RV Road and Bommasandra – at 5 am on Monday. The BMRCL, however, added that the special arrangement was only for this Monday, and services will start at the normal schedule of 6.30 am from Tuesday onwards. As previously announced, services on the Purple Line and the Green Line will follow the regular early schedule for Monday and start at 4.15 am. The Yellow Line currently operates trains at a frequency of 25 minutes. The gap has led to a surge of passengers, especially at the R V Road station, which also services the North-South corridor connecting Madavara and Silk Institute. On August 11, a day after the inauguration of the Yellow Line, the BMRCL hit a record ridership of 10.48 lakh.
