Rainfall likely to intensify across UP
A police officer in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj has drawn widespread attention online after offering prayers to floodwater that entered his home, describing it as a divine blessing. Videos shared by the officer have since gone viral, generating both praise and criticism. Chandradeep Nishad , who serves as a PSO to a High Court judge and identifies himself online as a national swimmer and UP Police swimming champion, posted two videos on Instagram . In the clips, he is seen treating the floodwater in and around his home as a holy manifestation of the Ganga river.Dressed in uniform, Nishad is shown pouring milk and sprinkling rose petals on the water while chanting, 'Jai Ganga Maiya ki' (Hail Mother Ganga ). In one of the videos, he wrote, 'Mother Ganga arrived at our house while leaving for duty this morning. Got blessings by worshipping Maa Ganga at my doorstep. Hail Mother Ganga.'Another clip shows the water level inside his house rising above the waist. Nishad is seen swimming in the murky water and repeatedly chanting, 'Jai Ganga Maiya.' At one point, he says, 'Thousands of devotees come to you (Ganga), but you yourself came to bless me.'The videos have prompted a range of reactions on social media. While many appreciated his devotion and humour in the face of adversity, others criticised the state of flood preparedness in Uttar Pradesh. One Instagram user wrote, 'Failure of UP government… no proper drainage system.' Another took a sarcastic tone: 'If there is power in your devotion and in Mother Ganga, then she should never leave your home. We pray to Mother Ganga that she always remains in your house like this, so that you and your entire family may be truly blessed.'Supportive comments also surfaced. 'There must have been a lot of damage to the house, but if the heart is pure, then everything is fine,' said one user. Another added, 'If the mind is pure, then even a small vessel holds the Ganga,' referencing a Hindi saying, 'Man changa toh kathuti me Ganga.'The viral moment comes amid forecasts of increased rainfall across Uttar Pradesh in the coming weeks. According to the Hindustan Times, climate models under the Monsoon Mission suggest that most regions in the state are expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall in August and September.Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Lucknow Meteorological Office, said, 'At present, western and southern Uttar Pradesh may witness below-normal temperatures in August, whereas eastern UP is likely to record normal to above-normal temperatures.'Low-lying areas, particularly those near the Bihar border, remain vulnerable to further flooding as rainfall activity intensifies.

West Bengal: Tension in Barasat after clashes break out during Suvendu Adhikari's rally
Tensions flared in Barasat, in the North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday during the BJP's 'Kanya Suraksha Yatra' rally, led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, as Trinamool Congress supporters allegedly clashed with BJP participants, during the event aimed at highlighting crimes against women in the state. According to reports, a confrontation erupted when the BJP procession reached the Champadali More, in Barasat, where a TMC party office is located. The BJP has alleged that TMC workers made provocative remarks toward Adhikari, sparking a scuffle, and leading to stone-pelting and vandalism. A BJP supporter was reportedly injured in the incident. In response, the TMC supporters, reportedly, not only accused the BJP of instigating the violence, but also claimed that BJP participants shouted slogans to harass them and physically assaulted them, retaliating with sticks and water bottles, while they were standing near their party office. A banner featuring TMC leader Mamata Banerjee was also reportedly targeted. Police personnel, including those from Rapid Action Battalion, were deployed to bring the situation under control, officials said. Several motorcycles were also reportedly vandalised in the chaos. The senior BJP leader later claimed he was attacked in Barasat, but managed to escape, drawing a parallel to the Cooch Behar incident. Following the incident, Adhikari posted on X that the 'Kanya Suraksha Yatra' was a demand for the safety of women in the state, citing a rise in violence against women under the TMC government. Adhikari further said that atrocities against women were on the rise in Bengal due to a 'complete collapse of law and order.' There was no immediate response from the TMC regarding the allegations. The incident comes a day after Adhikari's convoy was allegedly attacked by some people in Cooch Behar district on Tuesday afternoon. Security and police vehicles were vandalized, and Adhikari's bulletproof car was reportedly hit with sticks, stones. Police have also arrested several individuals. — With PTI Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. She is a journalist with over a decade of experience in the media industry. Kerala IT firm CEO, who accused ex-employee of extortion, faces sexual harassment complaint from her
An alleged extortion case against a woman former employee of an IT firm and her husband has taken a turn with the CEO of the same company and his three colleagues now facing a case of sexual harassment on the complaint of the woman. A day after Kochi infopark police registered the case against the CEO of Litmus 7 Systems Consulting Private Limited, Venu Gopalakrishnan, on Wednesday, he sought pre-arrest bail from the High Court. The HC restrained the arrest of his colleagues Jacob P Thamby, Eby Paul and Bimalraj Haridas till the government prosecutor files instructions from the police. However, the HC has not given any relief to 51-year-old Venu booked for criminal intimidation, insulting modesty of woman and sexual harassment. The CEO and others faced the case a week after his former colleague and her husband were arrested on charges of extortion. After obtaining bail, the couple filed complaints with police higher ups, leading to registration of FIR against Venu and others. Last month, Venu, in his complaint, had alleged that the couple had accused him of having an affair with the woman and threatened him with a rape case to extort money . He alleged that on July 23, she contacted the three staff members of the company and asked them to come to a hotel in Kochi where the couple allegedly demanded Rs 30 crore to settle the matter. The couple allegedly sought an assurance in writing from Venu and asked him to transfer `10 crore to her account and two cheques for the remaining amount. On July 28, Rs 50,000 was transferred from Venu's account to that of the woman's. The next day, the couple were arrested by the police on charges of extortion and remanded in judicial custody. Days later after they got bail, the couple complained to police alleging sexual harassment by Venu when she worked with him. She said she joined the company in February 2024 and quit after getting married earlier this year, but she alleged that her former employer continued to pester her. She alleged that when she and her husband were about to lodge a complaint against the CEO, the three representatives of the company came for mediation. She alleged that the staff told her Venu was ready to apologise and asked the couple to come to a hotel on July 29, where they were arrested. The couple, in their complaint, said Venu transferred Rs 50,000 to her bank account without information her. In her complaint, she gave details about the alleged incidents of sexual harassment.
