'100% communist lunatic': Trump lashes out on Zohran Mamdani's NYC win

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman known for his socialist politics, has clinched the Democratic primary in New York, defeating seasoned rivals and sparking sharp reactions, including those from US President Donald Trump, who is known to be vocal and critical of his political opponents.
Mamdani, who represents Astoria in Queens, drew national attention after his primary victory on Tuesday night. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to unleash a tirade against Mamdani, branding him a '100 per cent communist lunatic' and claiming his success marked a "dangerous shift" for the Democratic party.
Trump further derided Mamdani's appearance and intellect, while criticising Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Chuck Schumer, sarcastically referring to the latter as 'our Great Palestinian Senator' and accusing him of 'grovelling' in support.
"It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100 per cent Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is grovelling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country (sic)!" Trump wrote.
In a second post, Trump suggested Democrats had lost their political footing and mockingly proposed they nominate Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett as their next presidential candidate. He went on to disparage the so-called 'AOC+3' group of progressive lawmakers and painted a grim picture of the country's future with Mamdani potentially becoming New York City's mayor.
"I have an idea for the Democrats to bring them back into 'play'. After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election, the Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet – Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!" he said.
Zohran Mamdani wins NY Democratic primary
Despite facing opposition from establishment Democrats, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani's grassroots strategy proved effective. Mamdani's campaign pledges included fare-free public transport, rent freezes, and municipally operated grocery stores.
Most of his campaigning was done on social media, not unlike Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. However, unlike Trump and democratic rival Cuomo, Mamdani's run was largely funded through small donations rather than billionaire donors.
A turning point came during a Democratic debate, where a clip of Mamdani criticising Cuomo's political record and personal controversies went viral, amassing more than 10 million views on X and over a million on TikTok.
2025 New York City mayoral race
The 2025 New York City mayoral election is scheduled to occur on November 4, 2025.
Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and 2021 GOP nominee, is again the Republican candidate for mayor in 2025. Incumbent Eric Adams, elected as a Democrat in 2021, is seeking a second term as an independent.

Pope Leo laments diabolical intensity of Middle East conflicts

VATICAN CITY, June 26 (Reuters) - Pope Leo said on Thursday that conflicts in the Middle East were raging with an unprecedented "diabolical intensity" and appealed for greater respect for international law, in comments to Catholic bishops and aid agencies operating in the region. At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being "devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic." "Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown," he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was "tragic and inhumane". Leo, elected on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, appealed last month for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. He did not name Israel in his remarks on Thursday. The U.S.-born pope also did not directly address the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran that also saw the United States bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities but he called for countries to show better respect for international law. "It is truly distressing to see the principle of 'might makes right' prevailing in so many situations today, all for the sake of legitimising the pursuit of self-interest," he said. "It is troubling to see that the force of international law and humanitarian law seems no longer to be binding, replaced by the alleged right to coerce others," Leo added. The families of hostages held in Gaza hope for their own ceasefire after truce in Israel-Iran war

OR AKIVA, Israel: Liran Berman hasn't had much to keep hopeful over the 629 days of his twin brothers' captivity in Gaza. Ceasefire deals have collapsed, the war has dragged on, and his siblings remain hostages in the Palestinian enclave. But the war between Israel and Iran, and the US-brokered ceasefire that halted 12 days of fighting, have sparked fresh hope that his brothers, Gali and Ziv, may finally return home. With Iran dealt a serious blow over nearly two weeks of fierce Israeli strikes, Berman believes Hamas, armed and financed by Iran, is at its most isolated since the war in Gaza began, and that might prompt the militant group to soften its negotiating positions. 'Now it's the time to pressure them and tell them, look, you are on your own. No one is coming to your help. This is it,' Berman said. 'I think the dominoes fell into place, and it's time for diplomacy to reign now.' A long nightmare for the families of hostages During their Oct. 7, 2023, attack, Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Most have been freed in ceasefire deals, but 50 remain captive, less than half of them believed to still be alive. The war has killed over 56,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or combatants. It says more than half of the dead were women and children. The families of hostages have faced a 20-month-long nightmare, trying to advocate for their loved ones' fates while confronted with the whims of Israeli and Hamas leaders and the other crises that have engulfed the Middle East. Israel's war with Iran, the first between the two countries, pushed the hostage crisis and the plight of Palestinian civilians in Gaza to the sidelines. Hostage families again found themselves forced to fight for the spotlight with another regional conflagration. But as the conflict eases, the families are hoping mediators seize the momentum to push for a new ceasefire deal. 'The achievements in Iran are important and welcome, enabling us to end the war from a position of strength with Israel holding the upper hand,' said the Hostages Families Forum, a grassroots organization representing many of the hostage families. 'To conclude this decisive operation against Iran without leveraging our success to bring home all the hostages would be a grave failure.'
