Versatile Kiwi Ingham can add polish to more than just Sabah's defence
The 26 year old, who is Australian-born but represents the New Zealand national team, sees the Malaysian Super League as a great opportunity to challenge himself and make a mark on new territory.
''Joining Sabah provides a new phase in my career and represents opportunities, and I'm quite excited to start this new season as this the first time I get to test my abilities in South-East Asia,'' said Ingham.
Having previously played for A-League club Newcastle Jets, Ingham hopes that his presence in Sabah will help to strengthen the team's defence as he is aware that other clubs have dangerous strikers.
''The other clubs in the Super League are of top quality and I don't want to underestimate their abilities.''
Moreover, Ingham describes himself as a versatile player by being able to contribute to the forward line and assist in scoring for the team despite being a defender.
''Whatever it takes, I want to give my best to help the team without missing any games, and if necessary, I have no problem playing up front and assist in scoring.
'I'm a player who never gives up and I will try my best to give positive energy to my teammates,'' he added.
Sabah's main aim this year is to create surprises, especially after they impressed last season by finishing third in the Super League with 40 points.
The last time the Rhinos won the Super League was back in 1996.

Piastri admits F1 title race now between him and Norris
FORMULA ONE championship leader Oscar Piastri conceded on Thursday that the title battle has effectively narrowed to a duel between himself and McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The Australian holds a 16-point advantage over Norris heading into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the sport's summer break. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, a four-time champion, sits third in the standings, a daunting 81 points behind Piastri with 11 races remaining. Given McLaren's recent dominance, the gap appears increasingly difficult to bridge. 'I suppose so,' Piastri said when asked if the title fight was now a two-driver contest. While McLaren officials previously dismissed early talk of supremacy, recent results make it hard to ignore. 'Every weekend now, or the last few weekends anyway, it has been Lando and I,' Piastri noted. 'I expect our competition to still be strong and put up a good fight, especially at certain tracks through the rest of the year.' Piastri, who secured his maiden F1 victory at the Hungaroring last year, remains focused on extending his lead. 'I'm just trying to win each race and extend the lead,' he said. 'Whether that comes from Max or Ferrari or Mercedes or someone else, we never really know.' McLaren's dominance is evident with six one-two finishes in 13 races. Piastri has six wins this season, while Norris has four. Verstappen, by contrast, has only two victories. The team has amassed 516 points, a staggering 268-point lead over second-placed Ferrari. Piastri expressed confidence in maintaining his form. 'Hungary has been historically a good track for us as a team,' he said. 'I expect us to be strong again this weekend.' The 24-year-old remains self-assured but acknowledges the challenge ahead. 'I'm confident that I can do it, but it's not going to be easy.' - Reuters

Arrival of towering Landis charges up Turtles' defensive unit
PETALING JAYA: The arrival of towering Brazilian centreback Diego Landis has added serious strength and fierce competition to Terengganu's defensive line. And no one is more aware of that than Safwan Mazlan. The 23-year-old knows he faces a steep climb to earn a regular spot in the starting 11, especially with Landis and seasoned national defender Shahrul Nizam Ros Hasni expected to lead the backline. 'Breaking into the first 11 is no easy task,' admitted Safwan, who featured in 22 of Terengganu's 24 Super League matches last season. 'But I believe in myself and my ability to compete at the highest level. I know I have to push harder and work even more diligently to earn that spot.' Terengganu's centreback depth doesn't end there. Promising national youth talent Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili and versatile defender Syafiq Danial are also vying for minutes, creating one of the most competitive defensive units in the league. Safwan, however, brings versatility to the table. Capable of playing both right and leftback, he offers tactical flexibility, though even those positions are tightly contested, with the likes of Alif Zakaria, Faris Rifqi, Hairiey Hakim, and Azam Azmi Murad in the mix. Coach Badrul Afzan Razali has used pre-season as a proving ground, rotating his squad to assess form and fitness ahead of the season opener against Penang at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Aug 10. Safwan has featured prominently in those matches and is making every minute count. 'So far, our pre-season has been really encouraging. 'The results have been positive, and we've been able to spot areas for improvement to strengthen the team. These matches have also been crucial in helping players build rhythm and confidence ahead of the league.' Safwan credits Badrul for empowering the next generation of Terengganu stars. 'Coach Badrul has given a lot of young players the opportunity to step up and find their confidence. That support has been vital as we prepare for the Super League.'

MFL confident fans will keep supporting Super League
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) are confident that fans will continue to support the 2025-2026 Super League season despite the absence of several teams from last season's campaign. MFL acting chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd believes support for the Super League is at a positive level, judging by the increased number of fans turning up for their teams' pre-season matches. 'I think the perception (that there will be less fan support) is due to the absence of Kedah, Pahang and Perak, who are among the big names in the league. Some even think that we will lose fan support. 'But we can see that supporters still turn up at the stadiums to watch their teams play in pre-season matches. This is a positive development,' he said. The season will kick off on Aug 8 with the Charity Shield match between Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. — Bernama
