Gujarat: Death toll in Gambhira bridge collapse rises to 18, two still missing
Speaking to reporters, Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya said that the rescue and recovery operation is still going on to find the two missing people and remove the debris from the incident spot.
A section of the Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand collapsed on July 9 and fell into the Mahisagar river below.
The official noted that the five victims of the incident are undergoing treatment in the hospital and are in stable condition.
Dhameliya said, "...Rescue and recovery operation is going on. Day before yesterday, we recovered 12 bodies, and yesterday, we recovered 6 dead bodies. 5 live victims are undergoing treatment and are stable. The remaining dead bodies are trapped under a slab and efforts are underway to recover them. The driver of the truck which is trapped is also missing, we are trying to find his body. In the middle of the river, there is a 3-4 metre layer of quicksand..."
"Soda ash is being released into the water, which is causing irritation and itching to the rescue team... Our team is working after neutralising it. A tanker of sulphuric acid is trapped inside, so we are making sure it does not get released. The basic objective of today's operation is to retrieve the dead bodies and remove the debris... The death toll stands at 18, and 2 people are still missing..." he stated.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a high-level inquiry into the recent bridge collapse on the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand.
The Chief Minister has entrusted a team of experts to conduct a detailed investigation and prepare a report on the repairs, inspections, and quality checks carried out on the bridge.
According to the Department of Information, based on the preliminary investigation, four officers have been suspended with immediate effect. NM Naikwala (Executive Engineer), UC Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer), RT Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer) and JV Shah (Assistant Engineer) have been suspended with immediate effect.
The Chief Minister has also directed that thorough inspections be carried out on other bridges in the state to ensure public safety.

FATF report reinforces India's position on state sponsored terrorism
New Delhi: Global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog FATF has for the first time introduced the concept of state sponsored terrorism in its latest report, highlighting that such funding is a longstanding threat to international peace and security, stability of regional financial, and political systems. State sponsored terrorism means a state actively financing terrorist activities as part of its state policy. Before this, India had raised and identified state sponsored terrorism from Pakistan as a source of Terrorist Financing risk in its ML/TF risk assessment 2022. The finding of the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) July 2025 report reinforces India's long-standing position on state-sponsored terror financing. The FATF report also highlights the funding patterns of terrorist outfits LeT and JeM. It noted the use of e-commerce platform in the procurement of materials for a terrorist attack in India by terrorists. Referring to the Pulwama attack of February 2019, where a suicide bombing targeted a convoy of Indian security forces, resulting in the deaths of forty paramilitary soldiers. "India's authorities concluded that the attack was orchestrated by Jaish-I-Mohammed (JiM). Investigations revealed the cross-border movement of a large quantity of explosives into India. Notably, a key component of the improvised explosive device used in the attack-- aluminum powder--was procured through the EPOM Amazon," the FATF report read. "This material was used to enhance the impact of the blast," the report added. Among other revelations in the FATF report, it noted decentralisation as one of the most reported trends regarding worldwide terrorism activities in recent years. For example, FATF noted that Al Qaeda (AQ) has over the past years used a centralised consultation council, known as Majlis al-Shura, to manage key strategic decisions, including financial management. As the organisation has progressively shifted to a decentralised model, loose central elements are now relying on regional branches, such as Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al-Qaida in the Arabic Peninsula (AQAP), Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), or Al Shabaab, which conduct operations and generate funds locally, FATF added. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an independent inter-governmental body that develops and promotes policies to protect the global financial system against money laundering, terrorist financing and the financing of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The FATF Recommendations are recognised as the global anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT) standard. The last comprehensive update on terrorist financing (TF) risks was released in 2015. "Over the past decade, terrorists have demonstrated a persistent ability to exploit the international financial system to support their activities and carry out attacks. While the methods they employ can vary widely, the overall trend underscores their adaptability and determination. This continued abuse of the financial system poses a serious threat to global security and undermines international peace," read the executive summary of the report.

Nine killed, six injured in Vadodara bridge collapse, says Collector Anil Dhameliya
Vadodara: At least nine people were killed and six others injured after a portion of the Gambhira bridge collapsed in the Padra area of Gujarat's Vadodara district on Wednesday morning, officials said. Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya stated that nine bodies had been recovered so far during the rescue operation, while six injured individuals have been provided medical treatment. Speaking to reporters, Collector Dhameliya said, "We have recovered nine bodies so far. Five people were injured, and the sixth injured was found just now, and he is being provided medical treatment." The Vadodara Collector mentioned that rescue teams from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), the Emergency Response Centre, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police were deployed at the site immediately after the incident. "Rescue operation started this morning. Local swimmers, boats and the team of Municipal Corporation reached the spot immediately. VMC, Emergency Response Centre, NDRF teams, other administration, and a police team are here. Rescue operation is ongoing," Dhameliya added. "Vehicles that fell include two trucks, one pickup van, one eco vehicle and one auto rickshaw. Two vehicles were lingering on the bridge," he added. Anand Collector Praveen Chaudhary said measures were underway to prevent the tanker stuck on the bridge from falling. Chaudhary told ANI, "According to preliminary information, a truck, an Eco, and some bikes fell below. Rescue operations are ongoing. The Vadodara administration and NDRF are present at the site. Arrangements are being made to prevent a tanker stuck on the bridge from falling. The Vadodara team, police administration, and NDRF are all engaged in the rescue operations." Meanwhile, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi stated that CM had sent a high committee to the spot to sought the report about the incident at the earliest. Meanwhile, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has taken the incident seriously and directed team of Roads and Buildings Department along with other teams to go to spot and take concrete measures. "9 bodies have been recovered and 6 people have been rescued. CM sent a high committee to the spot in the morning itself and he has sought a report at the earliest. Taking this very seriously, the CM has directed a team of the Roads and Buildings Department and other teams to go there and take concrete measures," he said. Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel said the collapsed bridge, which connects Saurashtra and Central Gujarat, was built in 1985 and underwent regular maintenance. "Today, the bridge connecting Saurashtra and Central Gujarat, Anand and Padra, has collapsed. It has been learnt that about five vehicles, big and small, have fallen. Three people have died. Five people have been rescued... This bridge was built in 1985. Regular maintenance and repair of this bridge were done, but this unfortunate incident has happened," Rushikesh Patel told reporters. Furthermore, Congress leader Amit Chavda slammed the state government and said that the incident occurred due to their negligence. "The main bridge that connects Anand and Vadodara districts in Gujarat, Gambhira bridge collapsed this traffic from the entire Saurashtra passes through here. We had demanded from the Government again and again, and people had written to them a that the bridge is not in good condition and it should be the Government paid no heed. That is why the incident occurred," Chavda told ANI. He demanded an inquiry into the accident and alleged that such incidents have occurred repeatedly in Gujarat. "Due to the negligence of the Government, this bridge collapsed today, and people died. We demand an inquiry from the Government. We also spoke with the Administration of both Anand and Vadodara to begin the rescue at once. We have also demanded an alternate arrangement in the wake of the bridge collapse. But we demand from the Government that such incidents happen in Gujarat again and again, so it should get all the bridges in the state audited, get fitness certificates and release the same in the public domain," he added.
