IndiGo fined Rs 1.75 lakh for giving ‘unhygienic, stained' seat to elderly passenger
'… airlines are required to maintain proper records of aircraft cleaning cycles and ensure that cabin crew are adequately trained in basic infection control measures. The DGCA regulations… mandate specific hygiene and sanitation responsibilities for the crew on board to ensure a clean and safe cabin environment for passengers,' the New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held in its order dated July 18.
'However, the Opposite Party has failed to produce or maintain records of the cleaning cycles and has also not demonstrated compliance with the requirement to train the crew in basic infection control protocols,' the Commission added.
Pinki, the complainant in this case, had boarded a flight from Azerbaijan to New Delhi on January 2 this year. As per her complaint, she found that the seat she was allotted was 'unhygienic, dirty, and stained'. On bringing this to the notice of the crew, they stated that the seats were not stained or dirty, alleged Pinki.
She also stated that after they displayed helplessness in replacing her seat, she endured emotional distress throughout the duration of the flight which caused her mental anguish.
To counter Pinki's claims, the airlines relied on mainly two arguments. First, it stated that the complainant had 'erroneously' filed the complaint against 'IndiGo Airlines', which was not a legal entity. Its claim was that the complaint should have been filed against InterGlobe Aviation Limited.
Secondly, the airlines stated that the cabin crew immediately took cognizance of the complaints and accommodated her on a different seat. It added that it apologised for the inconvenience caused and exhausted all possible options to clean the seat before making the switch.

Central GST authorities have not issued any notices based on UPI transactions, FinMin says after furore in Karnataka
With transactions of small businesses under the tax scanner, the Ministry of Finance on Monday stated that the Central GST authorities have 'not issued any notices based on UPI transactions'. In response to a question asked by BJP MPs K Sudhakar and Tejasvi Surya in Lok Sabha on whether the Government has issued GST notices to small traders and street vendors in the country without assessment of their business activities including Karnataka, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, 'No. Central GST authorities have not issued any notices based on UPI transactions.' On the query of whether such evasions are due to systemic flaws within the GST Department, the Finance Minister replied in the negative. Data by central tax formations for Karnataka shared by the Finance Minister in Lok Sabha showed that 1,254 GST evasion cases involving detected amount of Rs 39,577 crore were registered in 2024-25. This was higher than 925 cases with detected amount of Rs 7,202 crore in 2023-24 and 959 cases with detected amount of Rs 25,839 crore in 2022-23. The issue of Goods and Services Tax (GST) notices to small businesses came to the forefront last month after Karnataka sent a spate of notices to unregistered vendors and small businesses, asking them to register under GST for having breached the GST registration threshold. Several such notices in Karnataka had pointed out that such unregistered businesses had received payments by way of cash, UPI or POS machines exceeding Rs 40 lakh (for goods) or over Rs 20 lakh (for services) annually. The heightened scrutiny and the spate of notices to small businesses had a fallout — many small vendors were refusing to take UPI payments for fear of being tracked by the tax authorities. The Indian Express had reported last month that Central and state GST authorities had reached out to payment aggregators, seeking data of those who received payments exceeding Rs 20 lakh per year to undertake data analysis on cash-based and unregistered trade. A missive sent by central GST authorities to its field officers on June 24 had asked officers to identify sectors that are prone to cash transactions, conduct geographical mapping to identify specific markets for informal economic activity, and undertake targeted outreach programmes to engage with local business associations and nudge them to register under GST. It had pointed out that a part of the economic activity still continues to operate outside the formal tax framework, particularly in sectors and markets where cash transactions dominate. However, officials maintained that no notices were sent by central GST authorities. GST registration is mandatorily required if small businesses have all-India aggregate turnover above Rs 40 lakh in case of supply of goods (Rs 20 lakh if business is in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand) and Rs 20 lakh in case of supply of services or in case of mixed supplies (Rs 10 lakh if business is in states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura). Fresh trouble for ex-R&AW officer Vikash Yadav? Delhi Police claim link with Mahadev betting case accused
Jalaluddin's name had surfaced in the 2023 Rohini case, in which Yadav was arrested along with co-accused Abdullah Khan for allegedly kidnapping and torturing the complainant, Raj Kumar Walia. Yadav was arrested just weeks after his name came up in the superseding US indictment related to the Pannun case. New Delhi: Former R&AW officer Vikas Yadav, who was accused in the US of an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has connections allegedly with Jalauddin, a panel operator in the Mahadev betting 'scam' case, according to the Delhi Police. In October, ThePrint reported that Walia, according to the charge sheet, was told by the accused that 'Jalaluddin alias Sameer' had given jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi the contract to kill him. Jalaluddin was arrested on 1 July, but granted bail on 23 July. Jalaluddin, sources in the police said, is also wanted in the ED case. A Look Out Circular was issued against him by the Delhi Police, the chargesheet in the kidnapping case states. Sources said that Jalaluddin, is a native of Bihar and shifted to Delhi, before moving to Dubai for work. However in his bail application in the Rohini case, probed by the Special Cell, his counsel stated that he has no 'no prior criminal antecedents, is a permanent resident of Delhi with deep societal roots and undertakes to cooperate with the investigation and trial'. The prosecution had pointed out Jalauddin's alleged involvement in a separate ED case related to the Mahadev betting app case. The basis of his bail application was the defence's claim that both Jalaluddin and Raj Walia had travelled to Thailand on the same day on 6 January 2024, just weeks after the kidnapping FIR was lodged on 17 December 2023. While the prosecution disputed this, and Walia denied going to Thailand on the same day, as well as the WhatsApp messages and the photographs as 'manipulated and fabricated', the judge—granting bail to Jalaluddin—said that 'undisputed passport evidence revealing the simultaneous Thailand visit on 06.01.2024—which the complainant failed to disclose or explain—the court is satisfied that the applicant deserves bail'. The prosecution had argued that Jalaluddin is the 'mastermind behind the conspiracy, operating from Dubai, and his release could lead to tampering with evidence, influencing witnesses, or absconding, given his international links'. Sources said that Jalaluddin had made hawala transactions of Rs 16 lakh to Yadav and Khan to kidnap Walia, who stated in a complaint that his kidnappers asked him to make some payment to Jalaluddin. However, Walia claimed that it was Jalaluddin who owed him money instead and he had refused to make the hawala payment. Yadav and Khan, after allegedly making him sign blank cheques, asked him to arrange for Rs 20 lakh through hawala by 20 December, 2023 before they let him go, according to Walia. A Delhi court had asked the investigating team to file a supplementary charge sheet by 25 August in the Rohini case. Meanwhile, the counsel for Jalaluddin said that his client has no links with Lawrence Bishnoi. 'The complainant Raj Kumar Walia was an acquaintance of Jalaluddin, and they have known each other for years in business deals,' advocate Lokesh Ahlawat told ThePrint. Ranya Rao gold smuggling case: Karnataka Govt reinstates senior IPS officer father; posted as DGP
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Karnataka government has reinstated senior IPS officer Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao, who had been on compulsory leave since March this year. Rao, a 1993-batch officer, was sent on leave after his stepdaughter, Kannada actor Ranya Rao, was arrested in a high-profile gold smuggling case. In a fresh order by the Karnataka Government, the state administration announced that the earlier directive has been revoked and Rao has been posted as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, with immediate effect. The posting comes in an upgraded vacant position, signaling his full return to official duties. Check the order here: (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Background to the controversy Dr. Rao was serving as Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation when his name surfaced in connection with the smuggling case. In March, Ranya Rao was detained at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport with 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore while returning from Dubai. During the probe, a protocol officer at the airport told the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) that he had facilitated the actor's travel under instructions from the DGP. Rao, however, firmly denied the allegations, describing himself as a 'heartbroken parent' and stating he only learned of her arrest through the media, as Ranya had been living separately following her recent marriage. Current status of the accused The Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Advisory Board recently ordered one-year detention for Ranya Rao and her co-accused — Tarun Kondaru Raju and Sahil Jain. The directive, issued by the DRI on May 23, also prevents them from applying for bail during this period. Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranya Rao has acted in several films including 'Pataki', 'Wagah' and 'Maanikya'
