‘Data Manipulation': ICSSR slaps show-cause notice on CSDS
The ICSSR notice read, 'It has come to the notice of ICSSR that an individual holding responsible position at CSDS, an ICSSR-funded research institute, has made media statements that had to be retracted subsequently citing glitches in data analysis regarding elections in Maharashtra. Further, the institute has published media stories based on biased interpretation of the SIR exercise by the Election Commission of India..." Highlighting the role of the Election Commission, it said, 'ICSSR holds the Indian constitution in highest esteem. The Election Commission of India is a high constitutional body that has been holding free and fair elections in the largest democracy in the world for decades."
Alleging the CSDS to tarnish the sanctity of the Election Commission, it noted, 'ICSSR takes serious cognizance of the data manipulation by CSDS and its attempt to create a narrative with the intention of undermining the sanctity of the Election Commission of India. This is a gross violation of the Grant-in-Aid rules of ICSSR, and ICSSR shall issue a Show Cause Notice to the Institute."
The notice follows an apology from Lokniti-CSDS co-director Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday for his post about Maharashtra elections, which reported a significant decline in voter numbers in two assembly seats compared to the recent Lok Sabha elections.
'I sincerely apologize for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. Error occurred while comparing data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in row was misread by our Data team. The tweet has since been removed. I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation,' Lokniti-CSDS co-director wrote on X.

Eight months pregnant Sunali Bibi is 'stateless'. Weeks after she was detained along with her husband and eight-year-old son in Delhi and pushed into Bangladesh on suspicion of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, the 29-year-old woman from West Bengal's Birbhum district was arrested by Bangladesh Police on Thursday for being 'illegal infiltrators'. Bibi, her son, and husband were arrested from Chapainawabganj district, Bangladesh police said, adding that another family from West Bengal – Sweety Bibi (32) with her two sons, aged 6 and 16 years – was also arrested from the area. This comes as the Calcutta High Court is hearing the habeas corpus petitions filed by the families of the two women. 'They were pushed into Bangladesh from Kurigram (bordering Assam). Thereafter, they spent some days in Dhaka, mostly on the streets. For the past month, they have been residing in Chapainawabganj district. We have arrested them. We have found Indian documents from them. They will be produced in the court tomorrow (Friday). The court will decide. All legal proceedings will be undertaken according to the law of our country. Since women and children are there, we are handling the issue with due respect and sympathy,' Rezaul Karim, the police superintendent of Chapainawabganj, told The Indian Express over the phone from Bangladesh. The family of Sunali Bibi hails from Birbhum district in West Bengal. Members of her family worked as ragpickers and domestic helpers in Delhi for the past two decades. Like Sunali, Sweety Bibi (32) and her two minor sons, hail from a village in Birbhum. They were also detained and pushed into Bangladesh at the same time. Both families were detained in Delhi's K N Katju Marg police station and then deported. A video of Sunali and others appealing for help from an undisclosed location in Bangladesh following their deportation had gone viral on social media. Reacting to their arrest in Bangladesh, the chairman of West Bengal Migrant Labour Welfare Board, Samirul Islam, said it was a matter of 'grave concern'. 'Sunali is pregnant and children are with them. They are all residents of West Bengal, and we will bring them back in all possible legal ways. Already the matter is being heard by the court,' Islam, a TMC Rajya Sabha member, said. Hearing their habeas corpus pleas, the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra on Wednesday called the matter 'very serious' after Additional Solicitor General Ashok Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said it 'cannot be heard' in the Calcutta High Court since it is pending in the Supreme Court. The Bench, however, scheduled the next hearing on September 10, saying, 'It is a serious issue and there should not be a conflicting decision'. This comes close on the heels of detentions of Bengali migrant labourers in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh during the drive to nab illegal Bangladeshis. A total of nine residents of West Bengal, who were detained in Mumbai and Rajasthan, and pushed into Bangladesh. have been brought back after the intervention of the West Bengal government.

Opposition tears bills in Rajya Sabha, Gaming Bill passed without debate

Remove Ads New Delhi: Rajya Sabha witnessed stormy scenes on the last day of the monsoon session with the Opposition tearing copies of the constitutional amendment bills on ministers having to resign if they are imprisoned for 30 days and displaying placards against home minister Amit Shah. Passage of the Online Gaming Bill amid the din marked the culmination of a session that saw only 38.88% day's proceedings on Thursday began with protests by the Opposition which demanded a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR), leading to adjournment till post-lunch. When the House met at 2 pm, Amit Shah moved the motion to refer the three Constitutional amendment bills to a joint committee of the two Houses and nominating 10 members from Rajya Sabha to three Bills –– The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 –– were moved in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday amid violent protests by the Opposition, especially the Congress and TMC. Similar scenes were repeated in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The joint committee will have 21 members from the Lok Shah rose to announce that the House will nominate ten members to the joint committee, Opposition members Jairam Ramesh, Pramod Tiwari, Randeep Surjewala, Digvijay Singh (all Congress), Tiruchi Siva (DMK) and members of TMC, Left Parties, tore copies of the three bills. TMC members walked into the Well of the House with placards and shouted slogans against Shah. Just like e-cigarettes were banned by the Narendra Modi government to stop health loss, gaming will be regulated to help the middle Online Gaming law will support e-sports and games like Sudoku, Solitaire and the like and an authority will be appointed to promote and regulate them. However, those online games which involve investing money and are becoming a serious addiction will be examples, Vaishnaw said around 45 crore people are ensnared in online gaming and Rs 20 crore has been lost by those involved in it. Some people have suffered psychological disorders and other sicknesses. He referred to some news reports of gamers committing suicide, losing money meant for treatment of serious illness of a family member and so on. He said money laundering and terror funding have also been done with online gaming money.'This menace is akin to drug addiction. Many powerful people are behind it. They may go to court to stall this law. I seek everybody's help in ending this menace,' Vaishnaw Brittas and V Shivadasan (both CPI-M) had listed amendments but did not move them in protest against the House not discussing SIR and other bill was passed without any discussion or reply by the his valedictory address before the House was adjourned sine die, Harivansh said, 'Despite the best efforts of the Chair to facilitate meaningful and disruption-free discussions on listed business, this session was regrettably marred by repeated adjournments.'The House functioned for only 41 hours, 15 minutes in the monsoon session and the productivity was a 'disappointing' 38.88%.
