‘Elio' review: Pixar goes sweet and simple for its original outer space adventure

movie review ELIO
Running time: 99 minutes. Rated PG (some action/peril and thematic elements). In theaters June 20.
Like the 11-year-old title character of 'Elio,' Pixar's latest original is small and cute.
Nothing wrong with that.

It's time to accept that gone are the days of 'WALL-E,' 'Up' and 'Ratatouille,' when the Disney-owned animation studio had a stratospherically imaginative and artful vision that once put it firmly in the Best Picture conversation.
Now that the bouncing lamp's bulb is dimming, they're pumping out modest, but nonetheless charming movies such as 'Onward,' 'Luca' and 'Elio.'
The new one is more likable than blobby 'Elemental' or pointless 'Lightyear' were. 'Inside Out 2' sure felt like a '2.' ET won't phone home about it, but 'Elio' is a nice, frequently rewarding 100 minutes.

There's a simple focus on feeling in the outer-space tearjerker about a lonely orphan boy who dreams of being abducted by aliens so he can finally make friends.
Staring up at the stars is a powerful, timeless idea. Good enough for Galileo.
3 In Pixar's 'Elio,' a boy dreams of traveling to outer space to make friends.
AP
'Is life really out there?' Elio asks his Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), an orbital analyst who works on a military base while raising her nephew, after he stumbles into a museum exhibit about the Voyager satellite. Lost and confused, he becomes obsessed with finding extraterrestrials.

One night, they find him. He's beamed up to a kind of United Nations of species — called the Communiverse — and they ask Elio to become Earth's representative, believing him to be the leader of the third rock from the sun.
A couple of the aliens, an effete beetle dweeb and a ballet-dancing dragon, are cloying. I wanted Will Smith to come and punch them — a la 'Independence Day,' not the Oscars. The space station looks like a Las Vegas hotel built by a narcissistic jellyfish.
3 When he arrives, a group of aliens believe he's the leader of Earth.
AP
The story of mistaken identities is basically a kid-friendly 'Galaxy Quest.' Elio desperately wants to join the intergalactic club, but they'll only make him a member if he can talk scary Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), the chief of a warrior species, out of attacking the Communiverse.

Plenty of familiar bases are covered: Making your dad proud, the true meaning of family, friendship, purpose and courage, among others. In the final scene, Pixar forces us — effectively — to cry like a boot camp officer.
Beyond the requisite lessons, there are some witty touches. A subplot involving a creepy Elio clone nods to the horror genre in a funny way for adults. And the twist with Grigon and his slug son Glordon is smart.
3 Elio finds a pal in wormy Glordon.
AP
During one bizarre montage, I'm pretty sure the 11-year-old and his friend Glordon go on a booze-soaked bender around the Communiverse and hurl into a hedge. But the drink is called 'glorg,' so who's to say what the alcohol content is?
Elio travels lightyears away from home, and 'Elio' lands comfortably in the middle of the Pixar pack.

Disney Announces Cars-Themed Expansion at Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is gearing up for a transformative expansion as Disney officially unveils plans for a Cars-themed land set to roll into Frontierland. This bold development marks one of the most significant updates to the park in decades, bringing Pixar's beloved automotive universe to life in a wholly original way. A Journey Into the 'Wheeldernesst' The new land, inspired by the Cars franchise and themed around an all-new location called Piston Peak National Park, will combine the spirit of Route 66 with the grandeur of the American frontier. Drawing visual and thematic inspiration from real-life national parks such as the Rockies, the expansion will transport guests to a rustic, nature-filled retreat designed especially for Cars. Disney Imagineers have emphasized a unique blend of storytelling and landscape architecture, with flowing rivers, towering pines, waterfalls, and geysers surrounding immersive structures built to accommodate car-sized inhabitants. Classic western parkitecture meets Pixar charm in a land that feels both fresh and organically tied to Frontierland's storytelling roots. Attractions & Experiences While full attraction details are still under wraps, Disney has confirmed the land will feature two major rides: Off-Road Rally Adventure – Guests will board custom 'off-road' vehicles in an adrenaline-pumping race through rugged terrain. The experience will include an interactive queue inside a park lodge and feature an all-new original character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, a comedic, animatronic park ranger who introduces the park's lore. Family-Friendly Experience – A second, yet-to-be-named attraction will offer a more relaxed experience suitable for all ages, likely housed in the park's ranger station area. In addition to attractions, the land will feature walking trails, scenic overlooks, themed retail, and food & beverage locations inspired by the great outdoors—infused with Cars-style humor and design. A Massive Transformation To make way for the expansion, Disney has announced that several long-standing Magic Kingdom offerings will close permanently: Rivers of America Tom Sawyer Island Liberty Square Riverboat These closures will take effect on July 7, 2025, allowing construction to begin immediately. Disney has stated that key walkways and guest flow areas along the Frontierland promenade will remain accessible, with thoughtful redesigns to preserve the park's charm. A New Era for Frontierland This Cars expansion represents not only a physical transformation but also a thematic evolution for Magic Kingdom's Frontierland. While maintaining the land's adventurous spirit and western identity, this addition introduces new characters, environments, and storytelling techniques that align with Disney's vision for the future of its parks. The expansion is part of a broader $60 billion investment plan to enhance Disney Parks worldwide. Though no official opening date has been confirmed, industry speculation points to a multi-year construction timeline, with a likely debut in the late 2020s. Bringing together the scenic splendor of the American wilderness and the high-octane personality of Pixar's Cars, this expansion promises to deliver a uniquely Disney experience—one that honors tradition while racing full speed into the future. For fans and first-time visitors alike, this new destination will redefine what it means to explore the frontier at Magic Kingdom. Stay tuned for updates as Disney reveals more details about Piston Peak National Park and its cast of four-wheeled adventurers. Clint Gamache is the owner of ThrillGeek. ‘Elio' review: Pixar's best movie in years is a visually stunning and emotional sci-fi adventure

Earlier in the year, I got to see around 25 mins of "Elio", Disney and Pixar's new original sci-fi adventure, and that preview event set my expectations pretty high. I only got to see a selection of scenes from across the movie's run, but it successfully sold "Elio" as a fun-filled, sweet sci-fi adventure and put it near the top of my must-watch list, and keen to see the full release as soon as possible. Having now seen the entirety of Pixar's new summer movie ahead of its release this week, I'm pleased to report that it's both one of my favorite watches of the season, and I think this charming intergalactic caper is one of Pixar's best movies in years — here's why. "Elio" is a heartwarming summer sci-fi adventure that sees the titular tween hero heading off on an out-of-this-world. Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) is an 11-year-old boy who feels out of place. He's a deep space devotee with a huge imagination and one big dream: to be abducted by aliens. In this new misadventure, he finally gets his wish when an intergalactic organization known as the "Communiverse" beams him up after mistakenly identifying him as the leader of Earth. As a potential ambassador from our little blue dot, Elio finds himself forging bonds with strange new alien lifeforms and navigating an intergalactic crisis of truly epic proportions. "Elio" also stars the voice talents of Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, and Shirley Henderson. It might not quite have the heft of the studio's absolute top-tier releases, and the story doesn't see Pixar breaking new ground, per se, but "Elio" is nevertheless a touching watch. It broaches grief and loneliness, and managed to get me to shed a tear or two on a couple of occasions, while still also packing in plenty of whimsy, laughs, and hijinks that fans of all ages will enjoy. It's a winner, thanks in no small part to the talented cast, who really bring these characters to life. Kibreab's lead is an incredibly endearing, wide-eyed protagonist brought to life with all the enthusiasm in the world. As lovable as our lead is, though, "Elio" has another star on hand: Elio's caterpillar-like alien bestie Glordon (Remy Edgerly) threatens to upstage once he shows up on the scene; despite not having eyes, he's as expressive as anyone on screen. The supporting ensemble is solid, too (Brad Garrett's alien conqueror/struggling dad Lord Grigon is another highlight), but it's these two who really carry the sense of wonderment that's at the core of the film. Where "Elio" really dazzles, though, is in the worldbuilding departments. Pixar is, of course, no stranger to bringing us bold new visions, but the studio's corner of the galaxy is kaleidoscopically bright and beautiful, and populated with weird and wonderful alien species, each of whom has plenty of personality. The movie also comes with a dynamic score courtesy of Rob Simonsen, one that is grand enough to set the otherworldly vibe and still serve the emotional beats. Unless you truly have an all-time home cinema set up ready to go, "Elio" is a movie that's going to come alive on the big screen, and I don't think it'll be nearly as impressive if viewed for the first time from the comfort of your own sofa. I know taking the whole family to the movies isn't cheap, but in my opinion (and judging by the reactions I heard from the kids in attendance at my showing), "Elio" is worth it. It's an inventive and emotional adventure, and a trip across the stars that deserves to be taken. "Elio" hits U.S. and U.K. theaters on Friday, June 20, 2025.
