Travel bodies join hands to revive Kashmir tourism post-terror attack

Major associations in the travel and hospitality sector have joined hands in an effort to revive the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir after the Pahalgam terror attack in April.
This comes after the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) recently launched a 'Chalo Kashmir' campaign to encourage travel to the region.
'All the major associations have expressed solidarity with Kashmir and the entire tourism industry of the state, and the effect of this (the terror attack) will take some time to wear off,' Ajay Prakash, vice-chairman, Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH), told Business Standard.

MPTDC sees 80% occupancy rate in hotels during Independence Day long weekend
Indore: This Independence Day, which falls on a Friday, has created an exceptional long weekend for travellers, leading to a notable surge in hotel bookings at various tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh with property at most locations sold out. Popular locations such as Pachmarhi, Orchha, Chanderi, Shivpuri, Parsili, Tawa, Khajuraho, Mandu, Maheshwar, Hanuwantiya, Gandhi Sagar, and Saliani, as well as wildlife spots, reported an average occupancy rate of 80% in hotels managed by Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC). MPTDC managing director Ilayaraja T stated, "We are recording very high demand during the Independence Day long weekend. We have received almost 80 percent bookings, and many locations are fully sold out. This level of interest indicates a vibrant tourism trend in our state." Industry experts attributed the surge to new adventure offerings, including water sports, trekking and village trails, which have attracted tourists. The MD said, "The influx of visitors to Madhya Pradesh's quieter and less-explored destinations is proving advantageous for tourism growth and local economies alike. With the continued rise in tourism, stakeholders are optimistic about sustainable growth, promoting the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the region. " Lesser-known rural and tribal homestays are also witnessing an increase in bookings, providing supplementary income to local communities. In the state, Indore region recorded the highest bookings for Mandu, Hanuwantiya, Maheshwar and Gandhi Sagar. MPTDC regional manager for Indore, Ajay Shrivastava said, "Bookings are much higher than the previous year. Tourist flow is from MP, Maharashtra, Gujarat and many other states. The addition of rooms and infrastructure upgrades have helped a lot in attracting tourists." Amruta Khere, a homemaker, has booked a rural homestay near Orchha with her family for the long weekend. "Wherever we go, we take up a hotel, but this time we decided to experience something different. We are joined by our family friends and have booked a rural homestay for two days. We are super excited for this getaway as this is going to be very different from what we have observed in the past," Khere said. Travel agents noted that the newfound interest in experiential tourism, connecting with nature and engaging with local communities, is promoting rural tourism and household incomes. Travel Agents Association of India MP and Chhattisgarh chapter chairman Hemendra Singh Jadon emphasised the shift in travel preferences, stating, "Many travellers are opting for road trips instead of air travel due to soaring airfares. This trend is not only beneficial for local tourism, but also encourages people to experience the unique lifestyle and culture of rural areas." The loss is attributed to the closure of the airspace to India-registered aircraft due to the diplomatic row that ensued after the Pahalgam terror attack in India. The Defence Ministry noted that the shortfall from April 24 to June 30 was in overflying revenue and was lower than the reported PKR 8.5 billion, Dawn reported. It is pertinent to note that Pakistan called for the closure of the country's airspace after India put the Indus Water Treaty into abeyance. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While Pakistan boasted about the measure, the move affected 100 to 150 Indian aircraft flying over Pakistan daily, cutting transit traffic by almost 20 per cent. In 2019, a similar closure led to an estimated Rs7.6 billion ($54 million) revenue loss, compared to $100 million previously reported. Pakistan still defends its move While addressing the Pakistani National Assembly, the Ministry of Defence emphasised that such decisions, under the jurisdiction of the federal government, were issued through Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and carried strategic and diplomatic weight. They noted that the move was taken to 'safeguard civilians, protect infrastructure, and allow military planning.' However, throughout Operation Sindoor, the Indian military took precautions and ensured that civilians on the other side of the border were not dragged into the four-day military escalation between two nuclear superpowers. 'While financial losses occur, sovereignty and national defence take precedence over economic considerations,' the Pakistani defence ministry's statement read. However, the loss is significant. Before tensions between the two nations, the PAA's average daily overflight revenue in 2019 was $508,000, compared to $760,000 in 2025. The animosities between the two neighbouring countries reached a boiling point after terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated a tourist spot in Pahalgam, Kashmir, killing 26 people.
