US President Donald Trump names Sylvester Stallone among Kennedy Center honourees

RTÉ News2 days ago
US President Donald Trump has named Rocky star Sylvester Stallone and the country music singer George Strait among the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors as he pursues a controversial overhaul of the storied arts institution.
Disco star Gloria Gaynor, the rock band KISS, and the British actor Michael Crawford, known in the US for his indelible turn in the lead role of the Broadway staple The Phantom of the Opera, will also receive Kennedy Center Honors, one of the United States' highest arts awards.
President Trump announced he would host the gala ceremony, which usually takes place in early December and is later broadcast on CBS.
"I did not insist, but I think it will be quite successful," he told reporters at the stately white marble complex overlooking the Potomac River.
He also joked that he wanted an honour himself but was "never able to get one".
Stallone, who at 79 is the same age as President Trump, is a three-time Oscar nominee: for Best Actor and Screenplay for the 1976 classic boxing film Rocky, and for Best Supporting Actor, again in the Rocky Balboa role, in the 2015 follow-up Creed.
He is also a major Trump supporter and one of the president's "Hollywood ambassadors" along with Jon Voight and Mel Gibson.
Strait, 73, is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, known for hits like All My Exes Live in Texas and Amarillo by Morning.
Gaynor, 81, is the singer behind the disco anthem I Will Survive.
KISS, formed in the 1970s in President Trump's hometown of New York City, gained fame with their shock rock performances and outlandish black-and-white face paint.
Crawford, 83, made his mark on British television in the 1970s in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em before achieving international success by originating the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera, thrilling audiences with his powerful tenor voice.
The Kennedy Center, one of the United States' top performing arts venues, is a living monument to the late John F Kennedy.
Opened in 1971, it has long enjoyed bipartisan support.
But in February, shortly after returning to the Oval Office, President Trump ousted the Kennedy Center's leadership and installed himself as board chairman, vowing to purge any programming he deems objectionable.
"A few short months ago, I became chairman of the Kennedy Center," President Trump said.
"We ended the woke... political programming."
In his first term, from 2017 to 2021, the Republican president skipped the Kennedy Center Honors gala, the biggest fundraiser of the year, because some of the artists receiving awards criticised him or said they would not attend in his presence.
The Kennedy Center is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and also offers theatre, opera, comedy, and other productions.
Many artists associated with the Kennedy Center, including the opera singer Renee Fleming and the singer-songwriter Ben Folds, have cut ties with the institution.
Others, including the comedian Issa Rae, cancelled performances.
The producers of the hit historical musical Hamilton opted to cancel a scheduled 2026 run timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, citing the end of "neutrality" at the Kennedy Center.

Credit: ITV 4 Joe is currently playing Emmerdale baddie Ray Walters Credit: ITV Joe defeated Alex Beresford and Sarah-Jane Crawford to reach the final round. He made light work of the ITV show's pyramid - with 29 seconds remaining to answer the £50,000 Catchphrase. At this point, Joe hit a stumbling block as he tried to work out the last puzzle. It first showed various shops, with stop signs on display in the window. The key focus was "Sign World", which had a single stop sign and an arrow pointing to it. Joe initially guessed "Stop sign" and "Only a stop sign", as the clock ticked away. With only four seconds left, the actor correctly answered "One stop shop." It meant Joe scooped £50,000 for his charity - as well as £6,700 he won in earlier rounds. Host Stephen Mulhern said: "Do you know what, that is incredible. Wow, I have never seen it done like that." Joe then revealed he couldn't wait to share the good news with his charity. Ricky Wilson misses out on huge jackpot as he struggles through Celebrity Catchphrase final - would you have done better He joined the Emmerdale cast this year, playing shady new bad guy Ray Walters. Introduced with connections to Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb), it was revealed he would be involved with Dylan (Fred Kettle). Speaking at the time of his casting, Joe shared: "Well what an honour to join such a talented team at Emmerdale! "It's an iconic show and I'm grateful to be part of it." He added: "I can't wait to see what's in stock for Ray!' Hardest Quiz Show Questions Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the "worst" question in the show's history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: 'From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?' The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000. - Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the "worst" question in the show's history. The 1% Club - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: "Edna's birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen's birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir's birthday must be the 'X' of January." It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir's birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence. - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. One of the questions asked the player: "Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?" The options were - sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots - with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes. Long-time soap fans will remember Joe as EastEnders' Matthew Rose from 1997 to 2000. The character feuded with Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) - who memorably framed him for murder. Lewis Hamilton hints he is taking a break with cryptic two-word tweet after Ferrari star's F1 struggles

The tweet follows his explosive comments regarding Ferrari's choice of driver taking a brake Lewis Hamilton hints he is taking a break with cryptic two-word tweet after Ferrari star's F1 struggles LEWIS HAMILTON has put fans on alert after making a curt and cryptic post to his social media accounts. The seven-time world champion hinted that he is taking a break from social media in a two-word post uploaded to his 8.6 million followers on X. 5 Lewis Hamilton has posted a series of cryptic messages on his social media accounts Credit: Getty 5 The racing legend posted images of himself and his dog Roscoe in a scenic natural environment Credit: Instagram / lewishamilton 5 He captioned the posts around the theme of getting away from his phone, and by extension, social media Credit: Instagram / lewishamilton The F1 legend has had a tough run of things in recent weeks as he continues his struggle to find his feet with new team Ferrari this season. Hamilton's message to fans was simply "back soon," implying the British sporting icon is stepping away from social media for a spell. This ties in with his earlier posts from this afternoon, when he posted a scenic picture of him and his bulldog Roscoe with the caption "Outta office." He posted similar sentiments to his Instagram account, captioning the same images "DND" - Do Not Disturb. READ MORE IN F1 LEW SHOULD GO Hamilton told to quit F1 and demand £180m before 'anything bad happens' When one fan replied with "touching grass, literally" - a reference to a phrase meaning to get out of your house or place of work and go outside, he replied in agreement. "Exactly," the 40-year-old said, suggesting he is taking the time away from social media to reconnect with other areas of his life. It is no surprise that the racing champion is keen to get away from it all, considering the brutal few weeks he has been through recently on the track. Hamilton did not land with the splash he was hoping for since making the switch from Mercedes to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season and has failed to make any real headway in the championship race. 5 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS He is yet to register a podium finish this season, and sits 42 points behind teammate and five-time podium holder Charles Leclerc in the drivers' standings. But it was in the most recent races in Belgium and Hungary that things really escalated for the Stevenage native. 'I'm absolutely useless' - Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari 'need to change driver' after Hungarian GP qualifying nightmare Hamilton had a nightmare start to the Belgian Grand Prix weekend at Spa in late July, qualifying in 16th after a shocking knockout in Q1. But things went from bad to worse as he was slapped with a 60-place grid penalty and forced to start from 18th after taking on a new power unit. He was keen to right his wrongs at the Hungarian GP the following week, but things were only going to get more dire. Hamilton only managed to make it to Q2 at the Hungaroring, prompting an outburst in a post-qualifying interview in which he labelled himself "absolutely useless." "It's me every time. I'm useless, absolutely useless," he said following his 12th place qualifying finish. 5 Hamilton appeared distraught as he talked media through his disappointing qualifying performance Credit: Getty "The team have no problem. You've seen the car's on pole so we probably need to change driver." Former team boss Toto Wolff came out in defence of Hamilton following his comments, and suggested that he could still come back and challenge at the very top of the sport. F1 icon Bernie Ecclestone was perhaps the Brit's harshest critic, suggesting Hamilton should retire before his legacy suffers at the hands of his declining performances. Whether it be his conduct on or off the track, or the comments of those around him in F1, it is becoming increasingly clear that the pressure is mounting on the shoulders of one of the best to ever do it. His next chance to turn things around will be at the Dutch GP at Zandvoort in two weeks.

TV review: Amsterdam Narcos is one of the most enjoyable docs this year

Amsterdam Narcos (Sky Documentaries and NOW) is brilliant. The three-part documentary rattles along, telling how Amsterdam became the corner-stone of the illegal drug trade in Europe, through the people who made it happen and people who tried to make it stop. It would make at least three brilliant movies. The first episode is the story of an unlikely partnership that cornered the hashish market. He's Klaas Bruinsma, the grinning son of a wealthy businessman. She's Thea Moear, a glamorous woman from the wrong side of the tracks. Thea does all the talking here, because Klaas was gunned down outside the Amsterdam Hilton at the height of his powers. It's riveting because she acts as if they had cornered the tulip market in Amsterdam. So when Klaas went to the bad side and started cutting off his rival's lips before torturing them to death, Thea flashes her enigmatic smile and said he did what he had to do. The support act is Manchester dealer Paul 'One Punch' Doyle. He didn't get his nickname from moderate drinking at the Christmas party. Paul was disappointed that Klaas took to cutting off people's lips, describing it as un-Christian. It's the funniest thing I've seen on telly for a while. The second episode is the best movie idea. This time Johan and Brenda Toet end up making millions of ecstasy pills in the 1980s. They are both alive, magnetically good looking into their 60s. They are caught red-handed in their drug factory, Johan takes the fall, signs a form agreeing to co-operate, gets released, and they disappear to Portugal and have a son. Johan changes his ways but is re-arrested and goes to jail. There is something in the smiling, positive way they tell their story. And then we learn why. Johan found Jesus in jail, as did Brenda waiting for him outside. They started a ministry and now travel the world spreading the word. I love Johan and Brenda. I think maybe it's their white teeth. Support act here is Ilja Reiman, a street kid who stole ecstasy from a group of eastern spiritualists and started Multigroove, a massive party night in Amsterdam. He's as magnetic as the other two. That's the thing about Dutch people — they tell it like it is. There are a few British gangsters here too, but they have British reserve and sense of understatement. The Dutch make the best former drug-dealers. One of the most enjoyable docs I've seen this year.
