A tiny antenna made on denim will put 5G in your clothes

A tiny, bendable antenna capable of 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity has been developed by scientists, and rather than being made for phones or a smartwatch, it's for smart clothing. The 2-port multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is integrated into a textile and has been designed for use close to the human body. It is small and low profile enough that it can be hidden in the pocket of a shirt. How small? The antenna is just 24 x 24mm.
The research states the antenna can be fabricated on different materials, including denim, cotton, felt, and even silk. The version tested was made using denim, can be flexed horizontally and vertically without an impact on performance, and has sufficient gain to make it powerful enough for normal use, while remaining safe for use right next to the body. Its ability to use dual-band Sub-6 5G and Wi-Fi frequencies — 3.5GHz 5G and 5.2GHz Wi-Fi — set it apart from other recent single-band wearable antennas, and others without MIMO connectivity. The paper explains why this is important:
'With the growth of 5G and 6G networks, the entire nature of communication will be based on MIMO antennas which provide reliable communication due to their low path losses, high channel capacities, high data rate, and increased communication range without extra input power requirements.'
Connected clothing has potential uses by the military and in space exploration, but more relevantly to us is the use in health and sport. The dual-band antenna means sensors inside clothing can collect and send health data without the need for a smartphone or smartwatch, reducing the need to carry additional devices and increasing versatility. Additionally, an antenna inside smart clothing could be used to add connectivity to other wearables, and pave the way for true smart clothing with integrated flexible screens.
Crucially the antenna's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) has also been assessed, which shows how much power is absorbed by the human body and whether it's unsafe. The low-power nature means it falls well below the minimum acceptable levels, according to the research team, and is considered harmless. On the subject of power, the paper does not go into detail about how the antenna is powered, another essential piece of the puzzle to create smart clothing. While an exciting development, the antenna is still a research project and not set to be released for use inside clothing, but it's a step in the right direction.
Connected clothing, or smart clothes, have yet to hit the mainstream. Perhaps the best known example is Google's Project Jacquard and subsequent Levi's Trucker and Sherpa denim jackets, and a connected backpack from Saint Laurent. Increasing functionality through the use of antennas may help bring more products to life in the future.

When I finally got my hands on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, disappointment settled in as I realized the cameras on both phones are identical to last year's models. Newer phones usually get some kind of camera hardware upgrade, but the specs don't lie. This was the driving force that eventually led me to think that they're both even more overrated than last year's models, especially given how the Pixel 10 now has a triple camera system of its own — complete with a dedicated telephoto camera that delivers a 5x optical zoom. You'd think that its zoom capabilities are similar to the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL, but they're actually not. That's because these new Pro models from Google have a secret weapon called Pro Res Zoom, which gets some AI-assistance to enhance zoom photos. I got to briefly test it out, and it might convince you that these new Pixel Pro offerings are the new king of zoom. First of all, you should know that Pro Res Zoom, which can get up to a 100x zoom, is exclusive to the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Although the Pixel 10 now has that dedicated telephoto camera, it has a different version called Super Res Zoom that tops out at 20x zoom — and it doesn't use the same generative AI models that Pro Res Zoom is benefitting from. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold 10 won't have this feature either when it ships in October. I tested out Pro Res Zoom on a few different things, with the first being an Android figurine that was placed on the other side of the room. I switched over to 5x zoom in the Pixel 10 Pro camera app and proceeded to move it up until I maxed out at 100x zoom. Usually there's a lot of shakiness at this zoom, but the Pixel 10 Pro's stabilization kicks in well to mitigate them. After pressing on the shutter button, it took a little more than 10 seconds for the Pixel 10 Pro to deliver the enhanced Pro Res Zoom shot. The wait was worth it because it transformed the fuzzy and indistinct Android figurine and added detail and definition that made it look like I was taking the shot in front of it with the main camera — but I was on the other side of the room, about 30 feet in my estimation. I tried out a different target to see what Pro Res Zoom would do, so I pointed the camera at this blue flower that was again on the other side. Using the same exact process as before, the generative AI imaging models running on-device gave the picture clarity. There's a button to preview the before and after images, so needless to say I was impressed with the results. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. For my final test, I used the Pixel 10 Pro XL to capture a sign outside through a glass window in front of me. While I could still read out what was on the sign at 100x zoom without any enhancements, Pro Res Zoom simply cleaned it up by removing the artifacts in the original shot and defining the words on the sign. I'm really eager to put Pro Res Zoom through more testing to see how much of a difference it makes, seeing that I only got to preview the photos on the phone itself and not on a computer when I can look at the images in full resolution to better spot any flaws. Samsung established itself as the zoom king with the 100x space zoom in its Galaxy Ultra phones, but those days at the top could be numbered with this new Pixel 10 Pro feature. What I'm really interested in uncovering is how accurate it is, whether it's the fine details of a person's face or those fine print words on documents. Back in 2023, a new wireless charging standard called Qi2 was announced, promising faster top-up speeds and a system of built-in magnets (within the phone and the charging device) so that both the devices are locked tightly in place and offer stable contact for wireless power transfer. But so far, no mainstream smartphone brand has delivered phones that natively support Qi2 wireless charging, with the exception of HMD Skyline. The situation has been messy so far. Apple, on the other hand, has been offering the facility under the MagSafe name for years. With the Pixel 10 series, Android phones are finally embracing the full Qi2 experience. Google, however, is marketing it under the Pixelsnap branding, an ecosystem that includes a charging puck, stand, protective cases, and a minimalist round kickstand. Why does it matter? I love the fact that Google came prepared with Qi2 support across the board on the Pixel 10 series. Whether you go commando or slap a protective case on the Pixel 10, you won't miss out on the Qi2 wireless charging perk. You're good to go, without or without the Pixelsnap accessories. Thanks to support for Qi2 charging, the wireless charging speeds have reached 15W, and these can be achieved with any Qi2 certified charger out there. The ecosystem of Qi2 certified third-party accessories is pretty buzzy already. And that means you no longer have to stick with wireless charging accessories sold by Google only. Interestingly, the Pixel 10 Pro XL goes the extra mile and enables 25W wireless charging, thanks to Qi2.2 support. You can already buy a whole bunch of compatible 25W Qi2.2 chargers and stands from brands like Belkin and Anker among others. Just make sure that you are using a 20W or higher charger to get 15W wireless charging output, and a minimum 35W USB-C power brick to achieve 25W top-up speed on the Pixel 10 Pro XL.
