A tiny antenna made on denim will put 5G in your clothes

Yahoo13-02-2025

A tiny, bendable antenna capable of 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity has been developed by scientists, and rather than being made for phones or a smartwatch, it's for smart clothing. The 2-port multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is integrated into a textile and has been designed for use close to the human body. It is small and low profile enough that it can be hidden in the pocket of a shirt. How small? The antenna is just 24 x 24mm.
The research states the antenna can be fabricated on different materials, including denim, cotton, felt, and even silk. The version tested was made using denim, can be flexed horizontally and vertically without an impact on performance, and has sufficient gain to make it powerful enough for normal use, while remaining safe for use right next to the body. Its ability to use dual-band Sub-6 5G and Wi-Fi frequencies — 3.5GHz 5G and 5.2GHz Wi-Fi — set it apart from other recent single-band wearable antennas, and others without MIMO connectivity. The paper explains why this is important:
'With the growth of 5G and 6G networks, the entire nature of communication will be based on MIMO antennas which provide reliable communication due to their low path losses, high channel capacities, high data rate, and increased communication range without extra input power requirements.'
Connected clothing has potential uses by the military and in space exploration, but more relevantly to us is the use in health and sport. The dual-band antenna means sensors inside clothing can collect and send health data without the need for a smartphone or smartwatch, reducing the need to carry additional devices and increasing versatility. Additionally, an antenna inside smart clothing could be used to add connectivity to other wearables, and pave the way for true smart clothing with integrated flexible screens.
Crucially the antenna's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) has also been assessed, which shows how much power is absorbed by the human body and whether it's unsafe. The low-power nature means it falls well below the minimum acceptable levels, according to the research team, and is considered harmless. On the subject of power, the paper does not go into detail about how the antenna is powered, another essential piece of the puzzle to create smart clothing. While an exciting development, the antenna is still a research project and not set to be released for use inside clothing, but it's a step in the right direction.
Connected clothing, or smart clothes, have yet to hit the mainstream. Perhaps the best known example is Google's Project Jacquard and subsequent Levi's Trucker and Sherpa denim jackets, and a connected backpack from Saint Laurent. Increasing functionality through the use of antennas may help bring more products to life in the future.

Goldman's advice on playing autonomous vehicles as catalysts approach this year

With the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry poised to grow in coming years, several stocks could be a way to play the trend, according to Goldman Sachs. "Autonomous vehicles have arrived for both rideshare and trucking," analyst Mark Delaney wrote in a note on Monday. "The key focus for investors is now on the pace at which AVs will grow and how big the market will become, rather than if the technology works." Delaney estimates that the U.S. rideshare market filled by AVs will hit $7 billion in 2030, equating to 8% of the total market. The analyst noted that there are already more than 1,500 robotaxis on the road from Waymo, a division of Google-parent Alphabet . Commercial operations may expand to seven cities by the end of 2026, up from four today, in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin, Texas. "With this roll out from Waymo, coupled with planned launches from others including Tesla and Zoox, we expect over [1,800] commercial autonomous vehicles in the U.S. by the end of 2025 and [35,000] in 2030," the analyst also wrote, adding that AV scaling is being driven by safety and falling costs. Risks overdone Against this rapid growth forecast, Delaney said investors should keep an eye on both stocks that could benefit as well as buy-rated companies where investor concerns about risks from AVs could be overdone. Here are some of the stocks that Goldman highlighted. Tesla is one standout in anticipation of it debuting its robotaxi service in Austin later this month. CEO Elon Musk told CNBC's David Faber in May that Tesla plans to start serving the Texas state capital with 10 vehicles, eventually expanding to thousands if the launch is successful. "We believe the degree to which Tesla can have differentiated scale and technology will be key for its long-term profitability in the robotaxi business," Delaney wrote. "We expect Tesla to meet its objective to start AV operations this summer in Austin, although we also believe that Tesla's use of certain tools (including geofencing and local specific parameters) as well as a need to validate/improve on the technology for wider unsupervised use will limit how fast Tesla can scale its AVs in the near-term." Delaney is neutral on Tesla stock, saying he has a more "moderate" outlook for the company's profits than Tesla's own forward guidance. Still, he believes Tesla's earnings can improve in the medium- to longer-term as a result of full self-driving (FSD) and AV technology. TE Connectivity could also benefit from AV growth, Delaney said, adding that the company that enables the transfer of data, power and signals "has incremental content opportunities tied to the high speed data connectivity that is needed for partly and fully autonomous vehicles." "We believe that connectors for data connectivity make up about 10% of the total connector value per vehicle, and represent an attractive growth opportunity," Delaney wrote. Delaney has a buy rating on the stock, while his $184 price target implies more than 13% upside from Friday's close of $166. Shares have already surged almost 14% this year, far outpacing the broader market, and pay a dividend yield of 1.75%. A bright future notwithstanding, Delaney said AV ridesharing is still in its "very early days," leaving concerns surrounding AV risk to companies like Lyft potentially overblown and, in any case, "more than already discounted" in the stock. In fact, Delaney expects that AV operators and fleet owners will "continue to enter into partnerships in the coming years" and that Lyft could play a role in the broader hybrid and AV ecosystem by generating demand and managing vehicle fleets, for example. Delaney has a buy rating on Lyft, and his $20 price target implies more than 35% upside from Friday's close. Lyft his soared 31% in the past three months, and is 14% higher so far in 2025.

Verizon announces wild new offer to win back angry customers

Over the past year, Verizon (VZ) has embarked on the shaky path of gradually hiking the prices of its services, which has frustrated some of its customers. In January last year, Verizon increased the monthly prices of its myPlan and New Verizon Plan wireless accounts due to "rising operational costs." Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter During an earnings call later that month, Verizon Consumer Group CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath said customers "feel very comfortable" about the company's prices, since it was "delivering more value." Related: Verizon makes bold move to make it harder for customers to leave By March, Verizon also made the harsh decision to increase the price of its Verizon Mobile Protect Multi-Device plan and Verizon Mobile Secure Multi-Device plan by $8, which applied to wireless customers with four to 20 lines. Image source: Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images In response to these changes, customers took to social media to express outrage, with some even threatening to switch phone providers. In April, Verizon revealed in its first-quarter earnings report of 2025 that it faced a net loss of 289,000 total postpaid phone customers during the quarter. In a note to investors, analysts at New Street Research said the steep loss in customers matches Verizon's "worst result on record." Related: Verizon raises red flag about concerning customer behavior During an earnings call that month, Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg admitted that recent price increases contributed to the steep decrease in customers during the quarter. "We did have a slow start on postpaid phone net adds, largely driven by elevated churn due to recent price ups and pressure from federal government accounts," said Vestberg. Amid this alarming change in customer behavior, Verizon has decided to make a generous offer to attract and retain customers. The company has announced a new bundle in which new and existing customers with a myPlan mobile account can obtain a smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch when they trade in an eligible phone. The bundle specifically allows Apple users to receive an iPhone 16 Pro, iPad (A16), and Apple Watch Series 10. Google users can obtain a Google Pixel 9, Galaxy Tab A9+ 5G, and Pixel Watch 3. Also, Samsung users can get a Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy Tab A9+ 5G, and Galaxy Watch7. Critical Google Messages Security Update For 1 Billion Users Confirmed

Google Messages is about to get a lot safer with Key Verifier feature. Although Android 16 has now launched, at least for some device users, and brought with it long-overdue and highly welcome new security protections, users of Google Messages will need to wait a little longer for one critical update. Don't worry, this Google Messages update is coming to an Android device near you very soon indeed, and it really is an anti-scam security game-changer. Here's everything you need to know about the new key verifier feature. Although there's no doubt that Android 16 is a step up in security terms, particularly when it comes to anti-scam protections such as preventing the user from disabling Google Play Protect, sideloading an app or changing app accessibility permission during a call, there is still more work to be done. The good news is not only that Google knows this, but it is acting upon it. I don't use the term critical lightly, when it comes to cybersecurity that would be a poor show indeed, but if ever a new security function deserved the epithet, then Key Verifier for Google Messages is it. Dave Kleidermacher, the vice president of engineering with Google's Android security and privacy team, described the key verifier for Google Messages as providing 'an extra layer of assurance that the person on the other end is genuine' when in conversation with someone. The technical explanation is that the key verifier function is a tool that validates the identity of the person you are in conversation with when using Google Messages by way of public encryption keys that protect the end-to-end messaging. It verifies the contact keys in your Google Contacts, either by you scanning a QR code (yes, I know, but anti-scam protections can also use tools that are abused by scammers) or straightforward number comparison. The non-technical explanation, as Kleidermacher explained, is that it provides a visual way to easily and efficiently confirm that these secret encryption keys match. 'If an attacker gains access to a friend's phone number and uses it on another device to send you a message,' Kleidermacher said, 'their contact's verification status will be marked as no longer verified in the Google Contacts app, suggesting your friend's account may be compromised or has been changed.' Is it perfect? No. Can it provide a 100% guarantee that you are not being scammed? No. Is it a critical weapon in the fight against scammers? Heck yes. Anti-scam protection revolves around a central hub of trust, and the Google Messages key verifier will add confidence to your communications that you are in conversation with the person you think you are, and not a scammer. 'Key Verifier will launch later this summer in Google Messages on Android 10+ devices,' Kleidermacher confirmed. Not long to wait, but in the meantime, continue to be careful out there and stay alert to the phishing threat.
