Peadar Morgan urges Donegal to limit two-point openings in Ulster SFC semi-final against Down after Monaghan scare

The Irish Sun22-04-2025
DONEGAL defender Peadar Mogan knows they need to crack-Down on giving up two-point scores after Monaghan almost reeled them in last Sunday.

Dessie Ward, Micheál Bannigan, Conor McCarthy and Jack McCarron all raised orange flags.
And Donegal were saved by the bell when the hooter sounded just when the Farney were about to take a line ball.
But All-Star Mogan delivered the goods again and scored four points in a 0-23 to 0-21 victory to set up a semi-final against Down this coming Sunday.
And the St Naul's man admits the one-week turnaround will be tough.

But he knows stopping double scores will go a long way towards reaching another provincial final.
He said: 'It was Monaghan's first Championship game and it's their home crowd and venue.
'You're not going to expect anything else.
'But inter-county players are just so good at kicking the ball now that they're going to kick two-pointers. It's just about trying to limit them.

Lee Keegan backs Andy Moran to fire up Mayo attack with fresh game plan

Mayo legend insists his former team-mate can unlock the county's forward power after being handed the reins LEE KEEGAN is confident that Andy Moran's forward thinking can get Mayo firing again. Moran has taken the green and red reins following a season coaching a Monaghan side who consistently racked up big tallies. 2 Mayo icon Lee Keegan has backed new county boss Andy Moran to be a success 2 The pair played alongside one another for their county - and Keegan reckons Moran can inspire the team to new heights During their run to the Division 2 title, the Farney were the highest scorers across all four tiers of this year's National League. Averaging five two-pointers per game over their five Championship outings, they also posted a total of 5-116 during a campaign that ended at the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final stage. After enhancing his credentials while playing a key role in Gabriel Bannigan's management, Moran has now been installed as gaffer in his own county. With a backroom team that includes Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally, the 2017 Footballer of the Year was ratified as Mayo's new gaffer on a three-year term this week. Former team-mate Keegan told SunSport: "It's a smart appointment and I think it's an opportunity Andy will relish. Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally will add something a bit different as well. It's exciting and there's a good buzz around it in Mayo.' It is Moran's second job as an inter-county manager as the Ballaghaderreen man also spent three years in charge of Leitrim prior to his involvement with Monaghan. Keegan continued: "While Andy is ultimately the manager, he also showed his quality as a coach in Monaghan. "There's obviously been a bit of chat about an apparent lack of quality in the Mayo forward line but the way Monaghan's attack functioned this year bodes really well for Mayo, particularly around the two-point threat. That was a huge struggle for Mayo. 'I also think he'll allow them to have a bit more freedom and confidence, which you could see a big change in now. "I believe we have brilliant forwards with serious pedigree in Mayo. With Andy taking charge of that, I expect to see a huge shift around the attacking game plan from next year." Inside Sharlene Mawdsley's 'delicious' yet atypical Tenerife holiday with GAA star boyfriend Mikey Breen Following a last-gasp Donegal point, Mayo failed to progress from this year's All-Ireland group stages. Kevin McStay's third and final season at the helm also yielded another Connacht final defeat to Galway. But Keegan said: "I'm really optimistic. If they can get a few bits right, Mayo will become a different team altogether. I think there's enough evidence to suggest that the potential is there to challenge. "The defence is good, the midfield can get a bit stronger and what Andy did with Monaghan tells me that he can bring something really promising to this group. "At the same time, we have to be realistic and it's important to be careful with expectations. We haven't reached an All-Ireland quarter-final in the last two years and we haven't won a Connacht title in four years. "We have to aim for certain things and we might end up in bonus territory after that. A provincial title should be a huge focal point for Mayo now. "Another thing is that I expect Andy to throw young players in during the league to see what they're made of. Let them show what they can do and build from there.' Keegan, who played alongside Moran for the majority of his Mayo career, believes it is vital that the new boss is now afforded the scope to do things his way. He added: "My biggest hope now is that the county board will allow Andy and his backroom team the time to flourish and not to take away from them. "Let them build into it, let them pick their team and let them do it how they feel is best. This is an exciting story for Mayo and it's a positive story so let's keep it that way by backing them. 'There will be challenging times ahead, of course, because it's new to a lot of them. "But we want fresh coaches and managers and I think we've got the best one we could have hoped for. Fair play to the county board for putting the right people in charge so let's stay behind them now."

Joe Schmidt: 'This has got to rank very highly in terms of wins - and for me personally'

AUSTRALIA COACH JOE Schmidt said he hoped a phenomenal 38-22 Rugby Championship comeback win over South Africa in Johannesburg showed his team are on the road toward earning respect. The Wallabies, who had not beaten South Africa at Ellis Park since 1963, recovered from trailing 22-0 to beat the reigning World champions and Championship title-holders. Following a torrid last few years, the victory continues Australia's resurgence after being well beaten in the first Test against the British and Irish Lions, losing the second by just three points and then winning the dead rubber 22-12. 'This has got to rank very highly in terms of wins and for me personally, since usually you get absolutely swamped here in the last quarter,' said Schmidt. 'The players had to hang in there and I am really proud of the way they did that. 'You have got to earn respect every time you (play), you have to be really competitive in every game. 'We are still building our strength in depth and our game shape, but this is a great bunch of young men who have shown the ability to roll their sleeves up and earn that support. 'They deserve it and I hope there was really good support for them back in Australia.' The former Ireland boss continued: 'When the Springboks get their game going, when they are accurate, they are very hard to stop. In the first 40 minutes there was just wave after wave coming. 'But Fraser McReight stole the ball a few times, and the determination the team showed was very pleasing. Advertisement 'This is a really tight group, they get on very well together. We have had a chance to gel and a real collective resilience was in evidence tonight. 'We were not always on the front foot.' 'There were some fantastic diving tackles where we just got a boot or half a jersey. We needed a little bit of luck as well,' added Schmidt. - 'Really awful' Springboks - Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus called the performance 'really awful', blaming poor game management after a brilliant opening quarter. 'When you are 22-0 up, you tend to take chances, but you still need to build an innings or you can end up losing by nearly 20 points like tonight. 'There were so many breaks when Grant Williams, Manie Libbok or Edwill van der Merwe almost got away, but sometimes you have to realise that you are not quite going to get it. 'Their kick-to-ruck ratio was much better than ours — we only kicked nine times in the second half. It's definitely not wrong to say we overplayed. 'But they did not just tactically outsmart us, but physically too. The longer the game went on, the stronger the Wallabies were. 'It was a bad loss and at some stage our heads and shoulders were down. It was sad that there was no fightback so we gave them a bonus point and did not get one ourselves.' – © AFP 2025

Derry got off to the worst possible start as they conceded after two minutes when Alex Quinn made no mistake from close range, after Joshua Thomas' left wing cut-back found the unmarked defender inside the six yard box. Drogheda should have doubled their lead minutes later as Thomas broke the offside trap, but he failed to trouble Derry goalkeeper Brian Maher and blasted wide. Derry's first chance came on 19 minutes but Gavin Whyte's stinging 20-yard strike was straight at United net-minder Dennison. City gaffer Lynch made four changes at once on 58 minutes with Ben Doherty, Ronan Boyce, Mullen and Liam Boyce all coming on for Alex Bannon, Brandon Fleming, Sadou Diallo and Whyte. The changes seemed to spark the home side into life, but Carl Winchester's close-range shot was turned around the post by Dennison. The United goalkeeper had to make a smart save on 64 minutes when he did well to tip over Liam Boyce's curling effort, after the ex-Cliftonville man had found space inside the penalty box. Drogheda were inches away from adding a second five minutes later as Darragh Markey's right wing free-kick found Ryan Brennan at the back post, but United skipper's powerful header was outstandingly kept out by a diving Maher. 73': Derry 1-1 Drogheda Michael Duffy levels the tie at the Brandwell with a peach of a left footed strike 📺 📱 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) August 16, 2025 Derry equalised on 73 minutes in superb fashion as substitute Mullen raced down the right before cutting the ball back to Duffy on the edge of the box, the winger took a touch and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike past Dennison. The United keeper had to make a big save early in extra-time when he parried away Mullen's powerful long-range strike. Derry were forced into a change on 102 minutes as Liam Boyce picked up a bad-looking injury and had to be replaced by Sam Todd. The home side went close to taking the lead on 106 minutes as Duffy's left-wing centre found Ronan Boyce, but defender's powerful header was tipped over the crossbar by a full-stretched Dennison. Derry thought they had won the encounter on 114 minutes when Mark Connolly had headed home Ben Doherty's corner but referee Robert Harvey cut his celebrations short and disallowed the goal. 113': Derry 1-1 Drogheda Mark Connolly thought he had the breakthrough but Derry are denied by the referee's whistle #RTESoccer 📺 📱 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) August 16, 2025 A super Stott cross moments later found Duffy, but his glancing header, which had Dennison beaten, flashed just wide.
