Hojlund's fight to answer Man Utd's striker question

Rasmus Hojlund is about to face a match at the stadium that will host next year's World Cup United's friendly with West Ham at MetLife Stadium, in the grand scheme of things, is nowhere near as big a deal. But for the Danish striker, it's crucial.A crowd approaching 50,000 is anticipated for United's opening game in the four-team Premier League Summer Series on Saturday evening, just west of New York performance could determine whether head coach Ruben Amorim keeps faith with him as United's attacking have spent more than £120m on forward players this summer - but three weeks before the start of the new Premier League season, do not have the number nine many informed observers believe they are desperate were frustrated in their efforts to sign Liam Delap - who left Ipswich for Chelsea instead. And on Friday, Amorim hinted Hojlund remains his first choice for the he up to the task? In May, United finished 15th in the Premier League, their worst final placing since relegation from the top flight in 1974. A Europa League final defeat by Tottenham compounded the improvement has to come - Amorim accepts as for that to happen, his side must score more goals. They managed only 44 in the league last week before last, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe met chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox in Iceland. It is probably fair to assume the centre-forward position was there is no doubt they wanted Delap. United have been targeting the domestic market because Amorim is keen to add players who do not need time to adapt to the Premier League. But Chelsea sealed the then, the names of numerous alternatives have been advanced. Viktor Gyokeres was thought of as a target from the moment Amorim was appointed, given how successful the pair were together at Sporting after the 27-year-old had impressed in the Championship with Gyokeres is heading to Jackson's name keeps being mentioned in connection with United. There have been conversations about the Chelsea forward, but not to the point where it has looked as if United might try to buy Villa quickly shut down a link to their forward Ollie Watkins, letting it be known they have no interest in selling. Could United put that to the test?Watkins is an interesting case because he slipped down the pecking order at Villa when Marcus Rashford - unwanted by Amorim - arrived on a more expensive Watkins, 29, who has scored 75 goals in 184 Premier League games be a better option that a cheaper Jackson, who has been excellent and erratic at Chelsea, often both in the same game? Man Utd to need to raise funds Former Everton striker Moise Kean, who re-established his reputation in Serie A with Fiorentina, Randal Kolo Muani, back at Paris St-Germain and unwanted after a loan spell with Juventus, and Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta are all likely to be same is true of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, although Newcastle is a more likely destination for the there are the wildcard options - out-of-contract forwards such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jamie none of these options come without risk. And for United, funds are limited and there are so many weaknesses to referred to the need for more energy in midfield after last Saturday's 0-0 draw with Leeds in didn't mention the additional issues, but others have: Goalkeeper, central defence, the right-sided wing-back role. The list goes all of this can be dealt with in a single transfer window. It is quite possible 12 months from now, if he is still in post, Amorim will still be looking to address flaws that exist now, as well as those that emerge in the coming are precious and United need to raise might have generated around £30m this summer through sell-ons being activated for Alvaro Carreras, who has left Benfica for Real Madrid, Anthony Elanga joining Newcastle and Maxi Oyedele moving to Strasbourg - plus the covering of Rashford's wages for the season by his loan move to Barcelona - but more needs to be was one of five unwanted players effectively cast out of the first-team picture by Amorim - the other four being Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. More money could be generated by selling those four - but Amorim has warned that they won't be allowed to leave on the is a player capable of generating a sizeable fee - albeit not the £60m United went into the summer hoping for. He may be pivotal, especially if Chelsea go back for a player they were close to signing in for now, Amorim has to maximise what he has. The case for sticking with Hojlund Against Leeds in Sweden, 18-year-old Chido Obi started. But the former Arsenal youngster currently appears to be an impact took over for the second half. As usual, he worked hard enough, didn't receive the service a centre-forward would want and did his best for the as usual, he didn't score. He has scored 26 goals in 95 competitive appearances over two years at United - just over a goal every four numbers are not terrible. But they include a run of five goals in four games last season and eight in eight the campaign before. Statistics can be manipulated to suit any argument - but if those two sequences are taken out, what is left is 13 goals in 83 appearances, or more than six games for every goal. That is clearly not good question is whether Hojlund can extend the more productive spells or if they are distorting the overall Friday, Amorim gave the impression he has not given up on the 22-year-old, who cost United £72m when they bought him from Serie A outfit Atalanta in his opening media engagement of the summer in Chicago, United's head coach made a couple of significant he insisted he would be happy to go into the new season with his current squad. In truth, he couldn't say anything else given there are no guarantees of further he confirmed his belief that his attacking reinforcements, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, could both operate as a spearhead in addition to the number 10 roles they appear best suited it was towards the end of a long unrelated answer, in connection to captain Bruno Fernandes, that Amorim might have given an indication about his coach wants Fernandes to operate deeper, away from those two prized number 10 spots. He thinks the Portuguese can cause more damage that way because he won't be marked as tightly."If you have the threat of players; of Rasmus, Matheus and Brian, in the space and a player with Bruno's quality on the ball, it's really important," he can change course quickly at Old Trafford but at the very least, the namecheck suggested Hojlund is likely to get some time on the pitch with Cunha, Mbeumo and Fernandes at the MetLife and if he finds a spark across a trio of pre-season fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton over the next nine days, it may cause United's hierarchy to pause and a greater or lesser degree, the search for a striker has been a feature of their Hojlund prove he is the answer after all?

Man United 'scout 6ft 5in centre back compared to Rodri as Harry Maguire's long-term successor' - but Red Devils 'face competition from European heavyweights for versatile youngster'

Manchester United are reportedly scouting a dominant 6ft 5in Norwegian centre-back who could be Harry Maguire 's long-term replacement. With the 32-year-old entering the final year of his United contract, Ruben Amorim and United bosses are thought to have already begun looking for his successor. The Red Devils sent scouts to look at Norwegian side Brann's 20-year-old wonderkid Eivind Helland earlier this month as his side took on Viking Stavanger. The centre-half has been described as a commanding defender, whose dominance in aerial duals gives him a 'strong presence', according to former Premier League player Jan Age Fjortoft. Likened to Ballon d'Or winner Rodri by his manager at the start of the season, Helland captained Norway's Under-21s to a 4-0 victory over Wales in June. But if United are to secure the youngster's services, they'll have to beat off competition from some of Europe's biggest clubs. Just a couple of weeks after United scouts made the trip to Scandinavia, Bayern Munich followed suit, with German scouts watching Helland and his side lose 2-0 to KFUM in Oslo at the weekend. Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg - two clubs with a reputation for discovering some of the continent's best talent - are also keeping tabs on the situation, according to The Sun. But United's links to the Norwegian talent come after Ruben Amorim admitted the club need to be 'careful' about making signings, saying he would be happy to go into next season with the squad he's assembled now. The former Sporting Lisbon manager's first summer at the helm has so far seen United bolster their ranks with the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo. But United fans will no-doubt want to see further additions, with the club's eagerness to bring in a striker heavily rumoured. Amorim, however, said: 'I think our club, in the moment, need to be really careful when we sign a player. So if we have to start the season with this squad, I'm happy. Because all the players that are here want to be here, and that for me is the most important thing. 'With Bryan and Matheus, we are clearly a better team. They can play as a striker. I'm really pleased because they proved that the goals they have. They are really humble, that is really important. 'The best thing is that they chose to be here. They had other options, Champions League options. And they read everything people say about our club in the moment, but they chose to be here and that is a key point for me. 'They have other players that are fighting for that position. We have Josh (Zirkzee), we have Rasmus (Hojlund), so our focus is to improve the connection between them. I don't know if the positions are there for them. They have to work.' The Red Devils were believed to have been interested in the highly-sought after Viktor Gyokeres, but the 27-year-old striker looks set to seal a move to Arsenal. United have too been linked with moves for Premier League-proven frontmen Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson in recent weeks. And in a bid to replace the struggling Andre Onana, United made a loan move for Villa keeper Emi Martinez earlier this week. Unai Emery and club officials however rejected the proposal.

Michelle Agyemang heading for the big time after Euro 2025 heroics

Agyemang is undeniably the breakout star of the defending champions' European campaign where, from their luxury accommodations perched high above Zurich, it is relatively simple for the youngest Lioness on Sarina Wiegman's squad to block out the escalating buzz around her. But as soon as they leave Switzerland – be it with a trophy after Sunday's final with Spain or not – the 19-year-old Arsenal forward, who twice saved the Lionesses from elimination in this tournament, has unequivocally arrived. Michelle Agyemang scores against Sweden in the quarter-final (Nick Potts/PA) 'Michelle, it's mad, like I would think she's about 30 years old, she's so mature,' said Toone of catalyst Agyemang, who netted equalisers in England's stunning quarter- and semi-final comebacks. 'She's so humble, she's coming to this tournament with freedom, you know, not a worry, not a care. She's just gone out there and done what's been asked of her. 'She's been amazing for us. She's turned up in big moments when we've needed her. She's got a lot of talent, and she can do a lot of things that not many players can do. 'Even when she scored and kept us in games, she's been the same Michelle that she was when she started this tournament. So, yeah, I'm absolutely buzzing for her. It's nice for good people to get things that they deserve, and she's definitely one of those people.' Chloe Kelly, centre, and Agyemang have been England's super-subs in Switzerland (Nick Potts/PA) Agyemang and Arsenal team-mate Chloe Kelly have been compared to Alessia Russo and best friend Toone, England's 'super-subs' during their Euro 2022 triumph. The the latter came off the bench twice to score at that home tournament, including the first of the Lionesses' goals in their 2-1 extra-time victory over Germany in the Wembley final. And yet Agyemang's anointing this summer is even more spectacular, considering her heroics in the knockouts came during just her third and fourth senior England appearances. She burst onto the scene as a last-minute replacement for an injured Russo, then scored 41 seconds into her England debut in April, ultimately convincing Wiegman she deserved a place in her 23-woman squad. Agyemang has spent the last Women's Super League season on loan at Brighton, and could still go out on loan again for the new campaign to ensure more regular playing time – and would no doubt receive plenty of offers. Agyemang spent last season on loan at Brighton (Nigel French/PA) She might also remain with the Champions League winners – where she will join new recruit Olivia Smith, women's football's first £1million player, at one of the most well-supported clubs in the world. Either scenario, it seems, comes with a much brighter spotlight on a wise-beyond-her-years forward who admires Kelly Smith, Russo and Lauren James but says she wants to be a 'unique player' who offers 'something different'. Toone, who also scored in the 2023 World Cup semi-final, knows exactly what it is like to achieve notoriety in a major tournament – and some of the stranger consequences that come with it. 'She might get papped eating a pasty like I did!' Toone exclaimed. 'I'll have to warn her about that. 'I think she's definitely in the bubble now but I think when she gets out she'll be recognised a lot more than she was before the tournament, that's for sure, and she definitely deserves that as well.'
