Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's climate budget outlines projects to reduce the city's carbon footprint
Mr. Vijayan said that the Corporation's climate budget which raises awareness on ways to overcome the climate-change related challenges can be a model for other local bodies.
'Although climate change-induced disasters are being witnessed the world over, there is still no united response at the international level to fight it. The happenings at the UN's COP 29 Climate Change conference last year are proof of this. No clear guidelines came out of the conference. Such decisions are also not to be expected in the near future. In such a scenario, it is important to not wait for such directives and evolve our own methods at the local level to address climate change and issues that arise due to it. We are working towards turning Kerala into a carbon neutral State by 2050. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's initiatives are part of this,' he said.
He said that the initiatives that the Corporation has already taken up are a good first step for Thiruvananthapuram, which is one of the fastest developing cities in Kerala.
Mayor Arya Rajendran, who presided over the event, said that the comprehensive climate budget is a continuation of the various steps the Corporation has taken in recent years.
'The Corporation purchased 115 electric buses for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). We also bought electric auto rickshaws for beneficiaries from the below poverty line families. Since streetlights are one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions, over the past few years we shifted gradually to LED streetlights. For collection of waste, we are in the process of providing 100 electric vehicles to cover all the wards. The Corporation has also installed solar panels on the top of government buildings in the city, with a total capacity of 17,000 Kilowatt. In addition to this, we have also decided to provide ₹10,000 subsidy for installing solar panels in households and for purchasing electric two wheelers,' said Ms. Rajendran.
On the occasion, over 7,000 school students from the city got together at the Putharikandam maithanam to make seed balls, mixing mud and seeds, which will be spread in open spaces all over the city as part of a mass greening activity.

Tiruvannamalai Corporation to donate non-biodegradable waste for road-laying works
As part of its green initiative, Tiruvannamalai Corporation is all set to donate its accumulated 250 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, mostly plastic waste like PET bottles, from Monday onwards to use for road laying works. Officials of Tiruvannamalai Corporation, who have spearheaded the initiative, said that a Coimbatore-based Startup has signed an MoU with the Corporation to collect untreated non-biodegradable wastes from Micro Compost Centres (MCC) of the civic body free of cost. Donated plastic waste by the corporation will be used by the startup for road-laying works in the Coimbatore region. 'The first shipment of plastic waste will be given to the startup on Monday. Thereafter, the private firm will take the collected plastic waste from MCCs at least once a week on its own. It helps us to make the town much cleaner as the total volume of waste to landfill will be minimal,' S. Selva Balaji, Commissioner, Tiruvannamalai Corporation, told The Hindu. As per the plan, accumulated plastic waste at MCCs, which are located at the centre of the town, will be safely disposed of by the Startup in the coming days. Each MCC, on an average, spreads over 2,000 sq ft and covers at least 4,000 households, covering four wards within the corporation limits, which comprises 39 wards. Every day, on an average, 65-70 tonnes of waste are generated in the town. Of this, around 20 tonnes of waste is plastic waste, mostly PET bottles. Each ward has 60-70 streets with around 400 households and a capacity of 300 kg of garbage generation. Corporation officials said regular disposal of plastic wastes will provide more space at MCCs to treat biowastes into organic manure for farmers in surrounding villages. Initially, the project will be implemented in the core areas of the town before extending it to more areas. The civic body was expanded into a corporation in January 2025 by merging 18 surrounding villages.

Farmers, workers to stage protest in Vijayawada on August 13 against U.S. tariffs, ‘anti-farmer' policies
Farmers, workers, and people's organisations have called for a protest at Dharna Chowk here on August 13, demanding that the United States withdraw the 50% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Indian exports. They urged the Central Government not to bow to American pressure and to safeguard the interests of Indian farmers and workers. The call was given at a meeting held here on Sunday, attended by trade union leaders Mooli Sambasiva Rao and N.C.H. Srinivas, Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers Association State general secretary P. Jamalayya, Rythu Sangham State vice-president Malneedi Yellamandar Rao, Rythu Sangham district secretary P.V. Anjaneyulu, and trade union leaders A.V.R., K.R. Anjaneyulu, Kasani Ganesh Babu, V. Lakshmana Rao, K. Basavayya, and V. Lakshminarayana, among others. Speakers criticised the BJP-led Central Government for introducing policies 'more dangerous than the now-repealed three farm laws.' They alleged that amendments to the Agricultural Market Act were designed to serve the interests of foreign and domestic corporate exporters and importers, warning that such measures would ultimately dismantle the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system and end government procurement, dealing a severe blow to farmers. They also accused the government of scrapping the Price Stabilisation Fund in this year's budget, slashing subsidies on fertilizers and farm equipment, and banning tractors over 10 years old — all of which, they said, would increase the burden on farmers. On the international trade front, the leaders alleged that ever since Mr. Donald Trump returned to power, he had been pressuring India to sign a Free Trade Agreement while simultaneously imposing 50% tariffs on Indian exports. 'While Mr. Trump threatens, our Prime Minister remains silent — this is dangerous,' they said. The protest organisers demanded that the Free Trade Agreement talks be abandoned, the new market laws harmful to farmers be repealed, the 50% tariffs be withdrawn, and the four labour codes detrimental to workers be scrapped. They said the demonstration is part of a nationwide agitation called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha under the slogan 'Quit Corporate' and urged farmers, tenant farmers, workers, agricultural labourers, students, youth, women, and the general public to participate in large numbers to make the event a success.
