Rain, returning flock choke GST road
Chennai: Rain and returning weekend travellers brought traffic to a grinding halt on GST Road and adjoining highways on Sunday evening, with vehicles crawling bumper to bumper from Chengalpet to Tambaram. With the long Independence Day weekend drawing to a close, thousands who travelled to their hometowns converged on the city at the same time. Traffic snarls were reported at several bottlenecks, including Perungalathur, Vandalur, Kattankulathur, and Singaperumal Koil, where rainwater logging slowed down vehicle movement further. Vehicles lined up for over a kilometre at Paranur toll plaza in Chengalpet, with all lanes choked. "I started from Maduranthakam early, but I ended up spending more than four hours in traffic. It was a nightmare," said Ananthakrishnan, a private firm employee, who got stuck near the Perungalathur bridge. "Traffic diversions for heavy vehicles have been put in place at SP Koil (main diversion), Guduvanchery, ORR and Zero Point for all Chennai-bound vehicles," said Samai Singh Meena, deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Tambaram You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Gold Rates Today in Chennai | Silver Rates Today in Chennai Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Temp stays above normal as rainfall deficit persists
Indore: Despite a heavy rainfall alert, the monsoon remained subdued in Indore on Sunday, with the city witnessing only cloudy skies and light drizzle. After a cloudy morning, the afternoon cleared up, allowing sunlight to return and pushing the day's maximum temperature to 32.2 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. At 5:30 pm, the temperature stood at 30.8 degrees Celsius with 74 percent humidity. Rainfall activity was negligible, with only 1.2 mm recorded in the past 24 hours. Seasonal rainfall in Indore now stands at 352.8 mm, which is 243.7 mm below normal. This translates to roughly 14 inches of rainfall so far, about seven inches less than what is expected by this time of the monsoon. Weather experts warned that only consistent showers in the latter half of August can help bridge this gap. On Saturday, light showers brought down the day temperature to 28.1 degrees Celsius, but by Sunday, the heat returned with intermittent spells of sunshine. The cloudy and humid conditions throughout the day provided little respite, leaving residents hopeful for heavier rains. However, Indore has so far witnessed only weak rainfall activity from these systems. A major shift is expected after August 18, when a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen and move inland. Meteorologists believe this system could bring widespread rain to Madhya Pradesh, including Malwa and Indore, between August 18 and 20. At 666.3mm, Nagpur records normal rainfall while Amravati, Akola remain deficient
Nagpur: The city received 666.3mm of rainfall between June 1 and August 17 this year, marginally above the normal of 652.5mm, according to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional meteorological centre at Nagpur. This translates into a 2% surplus, placing Nagpur in the 'normal' rainfall category. Officials at the RMC said overall Vidarbha subdivision recorded 650.8mm of rainfall against the normal 659mm, showing just a 1% deficit, which also falls under the normal category. While Nagpur, Chandrapur, Wardha, and Yavatmal are among districts reporting close-to-normal figures, Akola and Amravati are facing a shortfall of 21% and 20% respectively, putting them in the 'deficient' category. This is despite the heavy spells the two districts received in the last couple of days. Gadchiroli, on the other hand, witnessed the highest surplus with nearly 999mm of rainfall, which is 10% above the normal. Experts said that despite the overall satisfactory monsoon progress in Nagpur and most parts of Vidarbha, the distribution of showers has been uneven. "So far, Nagpur's rainfall is tracking close to the average. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The city received good spells in July and August, which helped bridge the early-season shortfall," an IMD official said. The RMC maintains that monsoon activity will remain active in central India over the coming week, though the intensity of showers may vary across districts. With over a month of the rainy season still left, the IMD has forecast an above-normal monsoon season in September, ensuring adequate water availability for agriculture and urban supply.
