Committed to ceasefire but...: What Pak Minister said on relations with neighbours

India Today5 days ago
Pakistan Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, on Tuesday sought a relationship of peace and stability with all neighbours, including India, saying disputes and differences are resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, instead of conflict and coercion. In an address at the Shangai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) foreign ministers meeting in the Chinese city, Dar said the last three months have witnessed "extremely disturbing developments" in South Asia.advertisement"It is most unfortunate that the attribution of the Pahalgam Attack to Pakistan — without a credible investigation or verifiable evidence — brought the two nuclear-armed states to the brink of a major conflict," he said.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.'Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to the ceasefire and the cultivation of a stable regional equilibrium. However, we cannot accept that the arbitrary use of force is normalised," Dar said."We believe that disputes and differences are resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, instead of conflict and coercion," he added."In that backdrop, initiation of a comprehensive and structured dialogue can meaningfully address the full spectrum of issues that have long bedevilled peace and security in South Asia. Strict adherence to bilateral agreements would be equally important in this regard,' said Dar, who also holds the portfolio of deputy prime minister.Dar said the events unfolding in the region since the April 22 attack in Pahalgam "reaffirmed a central truth of South Asian geopolitics: the peaceful settlement of longstanding unresolved disputes was imperative for an enduring peace in the region."'Terrorism is the common concern of humanity that threatens global security. All forms of terrorism, including state terrorism, are condemnable. We must shun the use of terrorism for political purposes and combat this menace through a cooperative approach, including addressing its root causes,' he said. The foreign minister also slammed last month's attacks by Israel and the US on Iran, saying it was 'unacceptable."He further said Israel has shown a reckless disregard for international norms and humanity through its relentless and disproportionate use of force in Gaza, resulting in the death of tens of thousands of civilians, causing the worst humanitarian crisis in Gaza."We call for an immediate halt to Israel's atrocities. The only viable remedy to the Palestine dispute is the realisation of a two-state solution which includes the establishment of Palestine as a viable, secure and contiguous state on the basis of pre-1967 borders with Al Quds as its capital," he added.advertisementDar said Pakistan is increasingly concerned at the trend of using aggression as a tool of policy. He called for the resolution of longstanding disputes through peaceful means, dialogue, diplomacy and according to the principles of international law, justice and fairness.'We need to take concrete steps within the existing SCO's mechanisms for trade and development and promote the use of national currencies for mutual settlement within the SCO region to avoid international financial shocks," he said.He also called on the SCO members to collectively address the existential threat of climate change, saying that at a time when the global order is experiencing profound challenges, SCO has emerged as a stabilising force.'In our pursuit of peace and security, we believe in non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force or threat of its use in international relations, as well as seeking no unilateral military superiority in the region,' he said. After the meeting, Dar, in a post on X said: 'At the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting today, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to multilateralism, mutual respect and regional stability. The Shanghai Spirit continues to guide us towards dialogue, mutual trust and the pursuit of a more just and inclusive international order.'The SCO comprises 10 member states, namely China, Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. China currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Govt members make statements, but opposition not allowed to speak, alleges Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, on Monday said that the Opposition is often not given the opportunity to express their views in Parliament, while members of the government consistently have the chance to do so. His remarks came as the Monsoon Session of the Lok Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions on Monday, with the House being adjourned twice -- first till noon and then again till 2 p.m. amid relentless sloganeering by the Opposition demanding an immediate discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack. Despite the ruckus, the government reiterated its willingness to hold discussions on all issues raised by the Opposition. However, when the din continued after the House proceedings resumed, Jagdambika Pal, who was in the chair in the absence of Om Birla, was compelled to adjourn the session once again till 2 p.m. Speaking to the reporters, the LoP said, "In the House, the Defence Minister is allowed to speak; their people (leaders of the ruling BJP-led NDA) are allowed to speak, but when the Opposition wants to say something, they are not allowed. I am the Leader of the Opposition; it is my right, but I am never allowed to speak." "Of course, there will be a discussion; if they allow it, then it will happen. But the issue is that convention says if the government's members speak, then we should also be given space. We just wanted to say a few words, but the Opposition is not being allowed to do so," he added. Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured the House that the government is fully prepared for a detailed debate on matters of national security, including the Pahalgam attack. "I assure the parliamentarians that whatever discussion they want on security matters, no matter how long, we are completely ready to participate, whenever the Speaker allots time," Singh said, responding to Opposition MPs questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the House when they want to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack. However, the Opposition continued to create a ruckus in the House.

China denies link to espionage group accused of attacking Singapore critical infrastructure

The Chinese embassy in Singapore refuted claims that an espionage group accused of performing cyberattacks on Singapore's critical infrastructure was linked to China. In a Facebook post published over the weekend, the Chinese embassy said such claims were "groundless smears and accusations". "The embassy would like to reiterate that China is firmly against and cracks down all forms of cyberattacks in accordance with law. China does not encourage, support or condone hacking activities," it wrote on Saturday. Last Friday, a Singapore minister said the espionage group UNC3886 was "going after high value strategic threat targets, vital infrastructure that delivers essential services" but did not give details of the attacks. The minister did not link the group to China but Google-owned cybersecurity firm Mandiant has described UNC3886 as a "China-nexus espionage group" that has attacked defence, technology and telecommunications organisations in the United States and Asia. Beijing routinely denies any allegations of cyberespionage, and says it opposes all forms of cyberattacks and is in fact a victim of such threats. Singapore's critical infrastructure sectors include energy, water, banking, finance, healthcare, transport, government, communication, media, as well as security and emergency services, according to the country's cyber agency.

Monsoon session of Parliament: PM Modi says Operation Sindoor achieved 100%, India saw ‘power of unity'

The Monsoon Session of the Parliament commenced today, July 21, and will continue till August 21, excluding August 12 to August 18. It will see a total of 21 sittings across 32 days. Prior to its beginning, PM Modi, while addressing media persons, said Operation Sindoor achieved 100% and the country saw the power of unity. PM Modi lauded Indian defence forces for Operation Sindoor's achievement. "The target set by the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor was achieved 100%. Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes," he said. He stated the new "Made in India form of Indian military power" is drawing global attention. "This monsoon session is a celebration of victory. The whole world has seen the strength of India's military power. The world has been very attracted to this new form of Made in India military power. These days, whenever I meet people of the world, the world's attraction towards the Made in India weapons being made by India is increasing," PM Modi mentioned. He spoke on the Pahalgam terror attack, which saw 'brutal atrocities and the massacre' that shook the world. On all-party delegation that went abroad to project India's consensus and its firm approach to combat terrorism, PM Modi stated, 'Keeping party interests aside, in the interest of the country, representatives of most of our parties, went to many countries of the world and in one voice, ran a very successful campaign to expose Pakistan before the world. I want to appreciate all those MPs, I want to appreciate all the parties for this important work done in the national interest and this has created a positive atmosphere in the country...' PM Modi said India saw 'the power of unity'. "So all the MPs in the House, give it strength, take it forward and I will definitely say that every political party has its own agenda, its own role, but I accept this reality that 'Dal hit mein mat bhale na mile lekin desh hit mein mann jarur mile'..." he asserted. He claimed that 25 crore poor people have moved out of poverty in the last decade. 'There was a time in the country before 2014 when the inflation rate was in double digits. Today, with the rate dropping to around two per cent, it has become a relief and a convenience in the lives of the common people in the country. 25 crore poor people have come out of poverty, which is being appreciated by many institutions of the world..' he said. On elimination of Naxalism, PM Modi hailed Indian security forces for their efforts, saying, "Today, our security forces with a new self-confidence and resolve to end naxalism are progressing forward. Many districts are free of naxalism today. We are proud that the Indian constitution is emerging victorious against naxalism. The 'red corridors' are transforming into 'green growth zones'. Meanwhile, during the Monsoon session, the central government is expected to table and pass the numerous bills comprising the Lok Sabha Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Geo-Heritage Sites and Geo-Relics (Conservation and Maintenance) Bill, 2025, National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025
