MAYS IBRAHIM (LIWA CITY)Innovators in the UAE have brought the ancient falaj irrigation system into the age of AI — this time as a tech-driven solution that promotes smart, sustainable farming amid climate and water challenges.At United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), a team of experts has developed a next-generation 'Falaj' — a smart irrigation system that integrates advanced Internet of Things (IoT) technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise water usage.
Mansoor Al Hosani, a horticulture student from the UAEU's College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, walked Aletihad through its features at Liwa Date Festival in Al Dhafra Region. The system is designed to optimise greenhouse irrigation through a seamless combination of smart sensors, AI algorithms, and remote-access capabilities, Al Hosani said. It operates on three main functions: monitoring, control, and alarm. The monitoring feature collects real-time data from sensors that measure soil moisture, temperature, pH levels, and electrical conductivity — metrics crucial for maintaining soil health and crop productivity. This continuous stream of information enables farmers to understand the needs of their crops and apply the precise amount of water at the right time, Al Hosani said.
How It Works The control system is managed through a user-friendly mobile app that gives farmers full oversight of irrigation processes. 'This way, you don't need engineers or workers on-site all the time,' said Al Hosani. 'You can manage everything from anywhere in the world.'Users can choose to automate water delivery or make manual adjustments, and the app's intuitive interface ensures accessibility even for those with limited technical experience, he added.Whether adjusting water flow or responding to changing environmental conditions, farmers have complete flexibility at their fingertips.Falaj is also equipped with an alarm system, which immediately notifies users when environmental conditions deviate from optimal levels. Alerts for issues like excess heat or humidity allow farmers to take timely action before such changes can harm crop yields.Al Hosani noted that this intelligent infrastructure is supported by several key components, including a soil moisture monitoring station known as the 'watchman.'A smart valve ensures efficient water distribution based on real-time pressure data, while a solar-powered system reduces reliance on the electric grid. The system also includes a frequency converter cabinet that helps maintain stable water pressure throughout the irrigation cycle.All of this data is presented in real-time through a centralised dashboard, which enables fast, informed decisions, enhancing overall farm management and productivity.Developed in collaboration with NAWA, a technology company specialising in agricultural innovations, Falaj supports various communication technologies, including 4G, Wi-Fi, and LoRa wireless protocols.
Al Hosani also noted that the irrigation system ensures farming information is protected through robust data encryption.

This new framework shortens the government's strategy cycle to a three-year timeframe, aiming to deliver faster, smarter, and more impactful public services. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, directed all ministries and federal government bodies to develop strategies rooted in innovation, flexibility, and advanced technology to ensure the goals outlined in 'We the UAE 2031' are achieved with greater speed and efficiency. The UAE's holistic strategy - balancing foresight with innovation, regulation, and collaboration - provides a valuable blueprint for other countries to accelerate digital transformation, Jad Haddad, Partner and the Global Head of Quotient – AI by Oliver Wyman, told Aletihad . Haddad leads regional advisory work on public sector transformation and AI strategy and has supported national-level clients across the GCC on planning models, data-driven governance, and workforce modernisation. 'The UAE's approach to data-driven governance stands out for its strong leadership commitment, integrated data infrastructure, and balanced regulatory framework emphasising ethics and privacy,' he said. 'By fostering public-private partnerships and focusing on citizen-centric services, the UAE accelerates AI adoption while ensuring tangible benefits for residents.'AI is positioned as a core pillar of governance under the new planning cycle. According to Haddad, this will transform federal services by enabling data-driven decision-making, personalised public experiences, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration. 'AI and predictive models enable the UAE to optimise government spending and human capital by forecasting budget needs, preventing inefficiencies, and automating routine tasks,' he added.'This enhances workforce planning, talent matching, and performance monitoring, driving resource efficiency and supporting sustainable, agile, and citizen-focused governance.'Haddad also pointed out that agile governance at the federal level prioritises citizen engagement, adaptive regulations, and rapid responsiveness, ultimately 'transforming the government into a flexible, efficient system that delivers timely, inclusive solutions nationwide'. Upskilling for the Future Lisa Lyons, Regional Transformation Centre of Excellence Lead, Mercer – IMEA, noted that success depends on how effectively the UAE nurtures and deploys future-ready skills. 'Equipping talent with AI skills is the linchpin in transforming ambition into sustainable leadership,' she told Aletihad . Lyons pointed to the recent partnership between the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) and Dubai AI Campus to train over 10,000 individuals in the field of AI by 2030 as a strong example of the UAE's commitment to prioritising AI skills Abu Dhabi Government Digital Strategy 2025-2027, led by the Department of Government Enablement, includes an AI for All initiative designed to empower citizens with AI capabilities. Backed by a Dh13 billion investment, the strategy aims to build a fully AI-native government by digitising services, automating operations, and deploying over 200 AI solutions across federal entities. 'The biggest opportunity is for organisations to invest in the development of critical AI skills to enhance long-term productivity and differentiate the organisational employee value proposition when bidding for talent. Investing in critical AI skills is how we turn AI from a tool into a true catalyst for growth,' Lyons said. Muscat – Mobile service subscriptions in Oman have risen to 8,130,355, exceeding the country's population of 5,315,155. On average, each person in Oman now has 1.53 mobile subscriptions, according to the latest figures from National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The data indicates robust growth in the telecommunications sector, supported by expanding digital services and increased adoption of smart technologies. Active postpaid mobile subscriptions rose 5.6% year-on-year to 1,239,509 by the end of May 2025. Prepaid mobile subscriptions also grew, increasing 3.1% to 5,335,847. Subscriptions in the Internet of Things (IoT) category recorded the highest growth – 118.7% – to 1,554,999. Overall, mobile service subscriptions increased 15.2% compared to the same period in 2024. Active mobile broadband subscriptions totalled 5,414,124 by the end of May 2025. Fixed broadband services saw a 2.6% rise to 588,015 subscriptions. Fibre optic connections grew 11.4% to 339,279, while fixed 5G subscriptions rose 2.1% to 215,850. In contrast, fixed 4G subscriptions dropped 38.1% to 19,654. Digital subscriber line (DSL) subscriptions declined sharply – 50.8% – to 11,806. Satellite Internet subscriptions decreased 2.1% to 653.
