'The Cabinet has taken a decision to provide a 100% subsidy for those consumers who consume up to 125 units of electricity,' Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting.
Mr. Yadav, who was accompanied by Development Commissioner Pratyaya Amrit and Energy Department Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, said it has been decided to reduce the usage of conventional energy and increase the use of non-conventional energy.
To promote solar energy, the State government has decided to install 1.1 KW capacity rooftop solar panels. The government would give 100% subsidy to 58.89 lakh Kutir Jyoti BPL power consumers for installing rooftop solar panels.
Out of 1.86 crore domestic power consumers of the State, 1.67 crore consumers consume up to 125 units per month, Development Commissioner Pratyaya Amrit said while making it clear that it would provide 100% subsidy up to 125 units. No fixed charge and other charges will be levied on households consuming up to 125 units, he added.
Mr. Amrit added that the relief would reflect in the next power bill cycle for July.
The decision to give free 125 units will not be applicable to commercial and industrial consumers.
Making it clear that the move will be applicable to all types of 1.86 crore domestic consumers across the State, Manoj Kumar Singh, who is also the Bihar State Power Holding Company Ltd (BSPHCL), Patna, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, said that 'consumers using above 125 units will continue to get subsidised rate of electricity under Mukhya Mantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayta Yojana.'
If a person consumes 200 units of electricity in a month, 125 units will be deducted from 200 consumed units and the person will be charged on the remaining 75 units at subsidised rate. 'All the domestic consumers are getting covered with the decision. No family will be spared from the benefit,' Mr. Singh emphasised.
Rooftop solar panels
Talking about installing rooftop solar panels for Kutir Jyoti BPL consumers, Mr. Singh further said that ₹60,000 is the cost for installing rooftop solar panels and the consumers will get ₹33,000 as subsidy under Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana and the remaining cost of ₹27,000 will be borne by the state government.
The move to give free power up to 125 units is expected to increase the State's subsidy burden. The government is currently giving an annual subsidy of ₹15,995 crore to power consumers in the current financial year which is 4% more than the previous year's subsidy amount of ₹15,343 crore.
The announcement of subsidised free power will put an additional financial burden of ₹3,797 crore, taking the total annual subsidy amount to ₹19,792 crore.

PM Modi to inaugurate project worth Rs 12,000 crore in Gaya on Aug 22
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth more than Rs 12,000 crore in Gaya on August 22. Ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, Chaudhary inspected the venue at the Magadh University campus and issued necessary instructions to officials regarding preparations. Later, while addressing an NDA workers' meeting at Cultural Bhawan, Haridas Seminary in Gaya, Chaudhary launched a sharp attack on the opposition, particularly the Gandhi family and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. 'Some people add 'Jananayak' to their names, and some write 'Gandhi' after their names, but merely writing does not make anyone a leader. The Gandhi family and Lalu family looted Bihar, while Nitish Kumar has transformed the state,' he said. Chaudhary questioned the Congress over the legacy of the Emergency and said, 'Does the word 'Jananayak' sound good from the mouth of a party that imposed the Emergency and jailed political workers?' Highlighting NDA's record in employment generation, he compared the tenures of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar. 'Lalu Prasad could not provide even one lakh government jobs during his tenure, whereas Nitish Kumar gave 7.5 lakh jobs between 2005 and 2020. By 2020-25, 50 lakh government jobs and employment opportunities have been created, and by 2025-30, one crore youth will be given jobs and employment,' Chaudhary claimed. During the review meeting with senior JDU leaders, Bihar minister Santosh Suman, and leaders of NDA allies, Chaudhary stressed that rapid development is taking place in Bihar under the guidance of PM Modi and the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar. He urged NDA workers to strengthen the organisation at the block level and spread awareness about government achievements among the people. Citing progress in infrastructure and power supply, Chaudhary said: 'In 2005, Bihar had only 17 lakh electricity connections, which have now increased to 2.14 crore. Currently, the electricity bill of 1.64 crore households is zero under the subsidy schemes. The government aims to provide free electricity to every household through 100 per cent subsidised solar plate installations in coordination with the Centre.' He also underlined improvements in road connectivity: 'Now one can reach any part of the state from Patna in five hours, and the government's goal is to reduce this to four hours.' Referring to religious tourism, Chaudhary pointed to major temple projects: 'The grand temple of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya completed under PM Modi's tenure and a Rs 1,000 crore grand temple of Maa Janaki under construction at Punauradham, Sitamarhi.'

JD(U) accuses Cong of insulting Karpoori by calling failed leaders Jan Nayak
Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) parliamentarian Sanjay Kumar Jha on Monday attacked the Congress for 'attempting to appropriate' socialist icon and the late former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur's legacy. He said the Bihar's people recognise only Thakur as the true Jan Nayak or people's hero and would never forgive the Congress for trying to confer the title on its 'failed leaders.' JD(U) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha. (X) 'There is only one people's hero who resides in the hearts of Bihar's people, and that Thakur..,' he wrote on X in response to a Congress's post calling Rahul Gandhi Jan Nayak. The comments came as Gandhi, who has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of resorting to electoral malpractices, is leading a 16-day 'Voter Adhikar (rights) Yatra' in poll-bound Bihar. Jha said stealing a title does not make anyone a Jan Nayak. He alleged the Congress never honoured Thakur either in his lifetime or after his death. 'Instead, [Congress] party leaders regarded him as a political threat. When Thakur became Bihar's first non-Congress chief minister in 1970 with the support of other parties, the Congress did everything possible to topple his government,' he said. Jha praised chief minister Nitish Kumar for consistently demanding the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, for Thakur. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government conferred the award in 2024 on his centenary. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Thakur with the country's highest civilian award. Congress, despite being in power for decades, ignored him.' The ruling JD(U) has sought to position Kumar as Thakur's political heir.
