Patidar women in Morbi barred from joining mixed-gender garba classes

Time of India3 days ago
Rajkot: In an unprecedented diktat in the run-up to Navratri, the Patidar community in the ceramic town of Morbi has prohibited its women from joining co-ed garba training classes so that 'notorious' elements don't exploit the 'innocence' of females.

A resolution to the effect was passed with majority support at a massive congregation of various Patidar associations organised on Aug 2, attended by thousands, including politicians and local MLAs.
Patidars, who account for nearly 70% of Morbi's population, have also directed the garba organisers not to open classes in areas such as Ravapar Road, Patel Nagar, SP Road, and Alap Society, where the community resides in significant numbers.
Justifying the decision, Manoj Panara, president of Patidar Yuva Sena Sangh, told TOI, "This decision was taken after reports that some men joined garba classes only to target young women. When men and women dance together to love songs for three months in garba classes, it's natural that they may get attracted to each other. Some notorious people join these classes only to woo girls and exploit their innocence."
As an alternative, the community has started women-only garba training centres at five locations, including Kanya Chatralay, Patel Nagar, Vaibhav Nagar, and Ravapar Road.
The academies have been strictly told to employ only female choreographers for women, have separate training timings for men and women, and verify the identity of trainers and participants, considering the safety of the women of other communities who also join these classes.
Sanjay Vyas, president of the Morbi Garba Classes Association, lamented the financial loss but said the organisers have agreed to comply. "They are in the majority, and we are all connected in business.

We don't want to take responsibility if anything adverse happens," he said.
There are 27 garba classes in Morbi, with a majority of them starting three months before Navratri, while around seven classes teach garba and other dance forms throughout the year.
The associations have not explicitly spelt out how they would deal with violations of the rules, but said their members will meet the parents of the women flouting the decision and counsel them.

Sixty-year-old woman fatally struck by businessman's car in Mumbai minutes after accepting tea from its driver and chatting with him

Mumbai: A 60-year-old woman died when she was struck by a high-end car in Bandra (West) on Wednesday. The deceased, Kasturbhabai Chavan, was sipping tea while seated on the roadside when the driver started the parked car and it hit her, said the police. They said the driver, Jeeva Munecha (41), had offered the tea to Chavan before getting into the car around 8.30 am. They said Munecha failed to notice Chavan seated on the edge of the road on the left side as he accelerated his vehicle. The police impounded the car, which is owned by Munecha's employer, a businessman from Bandra (West). "Chavan was seated at a blind spot and Munecha did not notice her, leading to the incident. She died due to the severe head injuries. He was not drunk and had offered tea to Chavan before leaving the place. He has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106 (death due to negligence) and 281 (rash driving) and under the Motor Vehicle Act section 184 (dangerous driving). He was allowed to go after issuing notice," said an officer at the Bandra police station. Chavan, according to her daily routine, walked to the tea stall in the Chimbai locality in the morning. She met Munecha, who offered her tea, as was his usual practice. After talking to her for 10 minutes, Munecha sat in his car while Chavan remained seated near the car bumper. "Munecha did not notice her and ran over her. At the time of the incident, Munecha's employer was not present in the car. He had come to the tea stall after dropping his employer at a fitness centre, and the incident occurred while returning," the police said. Chavan's sons were in Pune for work when they learned about the incident from the tea stall vendor, Harish Gautam, who reported the accident and Chavan's head injury. They rushed to Mumbai. "We are annoyed with the police. We had informed them not to file any case and that we would settle the matter with the accused driver. We were even made to rush to Cooper Hospital to collect our mother's body after completing the post-mortem," Chavan's son, Bharat, told TOI. Chavan's sons reached Bandra police station on Thursday evening seeking clarity on the matter. They expressed dissatisfaction with how the police and hospital had handled the case, as their mother's body was yet to be handed over to them.
